I love me the Marth Archetype:
    Sigurd (Horse Marth)
    Seliph (Marth 2.0)
    Roy (Red Marth)
    Hector (Armor Marth)
    Chrom (Future Marth)
    Lucina (Marth)
    Marth (Mask Marth)

My first encounter with the "Navarre Archetype" was as follows:
    "How well will you die?"
    "Be silent"
    "You're not a warrior"
Lon'qu was amazing. And yes, I consider him a Navarre archetype, for the fact that he was a Ferrox warrior who comes to your side after beating his boss's forces.

And if it wasn't for Masked Marth, Lon'qu would've been the enemy boss of Chapter 4 and then he would be a perfect fit for the archetype.

I find it really weird that the Wiki puts Ashnard, Garon, Hardin and Vigarde under the Rudolf Archtype category.
Rudolfs should actually be honorable man with a great ideal and a secret goal. Rudolf wasnt even a bad guy but a man who sacrifised everything so Alm could fullfill the prophecy.
But Ashnard is just a psycho and Garon, Vigarde and Hardin are no longer themselves.
    Really weird.

    • @ItssTyler
      @ItssTyler Před 6 lety +22

Ashnard had ideals but obviously was mad. The archetype itself can be simplified down to the big bad king, the specifics are really just qualities that make each one "unique"

Except his support with Peri, because it's Peri. She bends everyone to her will and gets away with it. Say what you want about Charlotte but at least she doesn't kill people over trivial matters and has some depth to her.

Personally, I enjoy all versions of fates.

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 Před 6 lety +3

Personally, I don't hate Peri. She doesn't "bend people to her will", that's Charlotte! Peri just unfortunately doesn't know any better, and because she's childish, she'll just throw a temper tantrum if things don't go her way; I feel like Xander knows this and this is the reason he treats her the way he does in their supports. Speaking of Xander, his reason for not wanting to believe Xander is an absolute monster is because family is the most important thing to him. You see, he knew the old Garon and believed that there had to be some good reason to justify his actions and that the old Garon could somehow be brought back; it's also the reason he reacts SO badly to the avatar joining Hoshido/not choosing to support either side: he does NOT like the thought of betraying one's own family. That being said, it is extremely clear that Garon had become a monster; we actually see what became of him in Conquest. The only reason I think that people hate this part of Xander so much is because we don't get to see what Garon used to be like for ourselves, but rather are told about it by other characters that did know the way he used to be, and truthfully, it's rather tragic, really. I mean, yeah, I would've wanted to get the chance to see the way Garon once was with my own eyes and feel it's a big missed opportunity; I just wish people would stop being so salty about it and blaming it for wrecking Xander's character, when really, that's not the case at all. Think of it this way: how would YOU feel if someone YOU loved started behaving the way Garon did, and how badly would YOU want to see them hopefully one day go back to their old selves again?

    OBJECTION! Well, sort of,
The "Pegasus Sisters" trope DID appear loosely in Awakening, but was subverted in several ways; The characters (Sumia, Cordelia, and Phila) were friends rather than sisters who met by being in the same unit, and you never get the Triangle Attack because Gangrel murders Phila. very mad guy in Fates' case, Kaze and Saizo are both serious, but Kaze tends to be more naive and trusting, while Saizo is (ironically) very jaded and cynical, with rage issues if he can't calm himself. Though that's partly due to Saizo actively protecting Kaze's innocence (well, innocent relative as a ninja) and hiding things that may upset his brother. While one is stil a hothead (literally), they're both usually the straight man and serious. It's a good way of integrating in character their different class than most christmas duos

I see you're using Wikia as the basis. It's OK. But let me just explain... something.
In Fire Emblem community, you'll find a lot who say discussing archetypes are pointless. However, I find it fascinating so it's all good.
Second, there are other sites, like TV Tropes, that defined archetypes differently than Wikia. For instance, the Rudolf archetype is called Hardin instead (at least until Hardin himself got a brand new definition of villains that were possessed), and the Jagen archetype is split further into Jagen, Oifey and... Eyvel. 'Jeorge' refers to two things there: in addition of the 'disguised noble', it also has the definition of 'mid-game souped up archer'. There's also Linde being designated as 'female mage whose family member got murdered by the bad guys and like to pair up with Merric', Gordin as early archer, Draug as early armor knight, and even 'skirt-chasing guys' or 'girls with bad case of unrequited love'. It's... diverse, to say the least.
Both sites has differing opinions about what constitutes as an archetype or not, and even some youtubers find some new personal archetypes. Even Orson (the traitor guy)
Still, nothing wrong with taking cues from the Wikia. Good job!

Just a personal opinion, I do feel that Xander on the Fates Birthright path did not come very close to what was depicted in his support conversations or in the Fates Conquest path but I do see a bit of reason in his actions and behaviour. Maybe if Garon was fleshed out a bit more as a complex/tragic figure maybe we, as the player, could understand Xander’s devotion to him and why he is willing to put so much on the line to defend his country. Oh well, there’s give and take in this situation, maybe Intelligent Systems can fix it if they decide to have a Fates remake in 10 years.

Though he's the Kempf archetype. Think Micahlis if you took out ALOT of his sympathetic parts and you have the Kempf. Mixed with the Jiol who is a high ranking noble who THINK their more important then they actually are and are antagonistic to the main Lord from the start. Since technically HANS fits the Kempf being an irredeemable hired help who was a threat early on to the Lord. Similar to how Narcian WOULD have beaten Roy if he dealt with him sooner and Perceivel was the only reason he failed the first time when he DID comfort Roy when he wasn't ready for him. If not for Gunter. Hans WOULD have killed Corrin at the valley

Heh, I called the #1 right as I saw this video.
    My own favourites include...
Jagen: Yes, the classic style. Sometimes with Oifeys, they tend to end up TOO good; Seth and Titania, for instances. Pure Jagens, however, fit their specific role perfectly without being broken. Gunter is my favourite of these (even if he only truly counts in Revelation)
Cain and Abel: One of the most reliable ones around, almost always I end up with one or even both of these as a mainstay in my army. My favourites are Sain and Kent, and Oscar and Kieran. I generally prefer the Abel's, FTR.
Camus: Probably the most interesting villain archetypes in the games, helps you remember not everyone on the opposing side is just an enemy to cut down. My favourites are either Camus himself, or Lloyd Reed (whom I feel counts even if the wiki doesn't)
Ogma: I've always liked Mercenaries more the Myrmidons, so naturally I prefer this archetype. My favourite is probably Saber, and maybe Holyn/Chulainn.
Merric: Ah, the early wind mages. This one has Soren, my favourite non-Lord in the whole series, so I can't leave this one out, can I?
Maria: Like Blazing Knight, I almost always prefer these to the Lena's, with the one exception, funny enough, being the characters these archetypes. My favourite's either Lachiesis, Priscilla, or Elise.
Minerva: Wyvern Knights are one of my favourite classes (my top 5 being them, Paladins, Troubadours, Mercenaries, and Dark Mages), so naturally I tend to like these. The original, Miledy, Heath, Cormag, Jill and Haar, Camilla... hard to really choose a favourite.
Malledus: The tactician is often one of my favourite characters in an FE game. There's the aforementioned Soren, of course, but Lewyn and Robin are not too far off.

Oscar has always interested me because he technically fills two archetypal roles. He is both the Abel, and the Oldest Pegasus sibling. A lot of people never consider it since they're not the same classes as each other or even Pegasus classes, but Oscar, Boyd, and Rolf are the sibling trio archetype. Though I would probably switch Boyd and Rolf for personality roles, since Rolf is a lot quicker to stress and very timid, and Boyd's pretty. . . Exuberant.
I also found your use of Lukas and Forsyth as a Cain/Able example reslly interesting, since Lukas is the kindhearted and calm, but simultaneously cold and calculating one, and Forsyth is the exuberant and boisterous one with grandiose dreams of becoming a knight. Esoecially since both Lukas and Python play similar roles when playing off of Forsyth. I also like how Celica has her own set in Mae and Boey.

So the controversies with characters are a thing. For example (some heavy spoilers ahead): In Chapter 25-26 The eldest brother has to be killed by Corrin. In the case of Ryoma I felt it was really sad and a hard moment in the story. But in the case for Xander... well you already know it. I love Conquest-Xander tho. Great videos as always :D

Camus archetype is my 2nd favorite due to their devotion to their homeland. Even if it means death. Why did Fates ruin Xander's character? @ziggymcdougal Před 6 lety +10

Great post and all but i'd like to play the devil's advocate here.
The Jagen and Oifey split honestly makes no sense to me whatsoever. People make the distinction by saying "Oifey's are Jagen's but good," which is one of the most inaccurate claims i've ever heard. If you need a couple of examples, many claim that Seth from FE8 is an Oifey as apposed to FE11 Jagen, who is a "true Jagen." But is there a noticable difference between the two? Not really. They are both the most powerful unit of your starting roster, have access to powerful silver weapons, and are relevant for about 22 chapters or so (with and without growths). Now compare FE11!Jagen to say Oifey from FE4 who has his uses, but is ultimately sidelined in favor of better gen 2 units such as Seliph, Ares, and Leif. The lack of holy weapons (Leif has the rescue staff which gives him utility outside of combat), as well as rather mediocre starting weaponry ultimately sets him back behind FE11!Jagen. Now one counterexample is usually never enough, so I draw attention towards another "Oifey" in the form of Arran from Book 2 (who has the option of starshards which boost growth rates.) Sadly, despite the fact that many of his growths can be pushed beyond 50-60%, he is considered the weakest early prepromote in the series. Contrast that with Dagda, who comes from a game with similar growth boosting mechanics, and the difference is quite noticeable. Dagda is relevant even in endgame thanks to his crazy bases and charge. I would bring up some examples from Berwick Saga, but it's hard to contextualize bases and growths in that game, but I digress.
In short, the Oifey archetypes aren't strictly better than the Jagen archetype, and "true Jagens" have shown to extend their usefulness throughout the entire game. As such, I kinda feel that the "Oifey" archetype means nothing and should be done away with. That's just my 2cents. Still enjoyed the watch.

I find it hard to distinguish between Lena and Maria, it feels like Lena is the missing Macedonian royal sibling because of how near identical they are. Maria doesn't feel like the snobby prissy type to me, same goes for Elise the cinnabun roll. I find it interesting that in FE6&7 the starting Clerics and Troubadours have their personalities swapped. Serra becomes the snobby (but still hilarious) one while Priscilla is the sweetheart, in contrast to Elen and Clarine.
I started with Fates, so when I see that Kaze and Saizo being part of the archetype named after the Biblical siblings I initially assumed that ALL Cains and Abels are brothers. Then again most of them have a brother-like relationship anyways (Cain and Abel, Sain and Kent).
Really dig Camus and wished that he serves as an archrival to Marth of sorts, though he's pretty close. His coolness is probably what saved him from "death" and appear in FE3 and be a good guy, just like Michalis. All while Hardin, a close ally to Marth in FE1 took their role as a prominent villain instead.
Also Finn should be a Jagenoifey in FE5.
I wonder who is older: Tana or Vanessa? But functionally Tana feels like the youngest and hippiest of the FE8 pegasus trio. Speaking of which, Fates has more than enough Pegasus units but none of them fits into the archetype (the all siblings aspect goes out of the window by FE8/9/10). I guess Hinoka can be a Catria and Reina as the Palla, but they don't have the Est pegasus.

1 of the archetype i'm really disappointed in is the Michalis archetype.
the first 2 members of this archetype, Michalis and Trabant, were amazing characters. but after that the archetype went downhill.
Michalis didn't like how his country was a puppet state wasting its resources at Archanea's whim so he killed his father and took the throne. 3 years after being defeated his sister was dethroned in a coup d'etat, implying that when it comes to the prosperity of his own country maybe he was right.
Trabant was king of a mountainous kingdom with little fertile soil. to make a better future for his people he was willing to do whatever it took. it's even implied that he held back in his final battle, dying on purpose as part of his plan to improve his kingdom.
unfortunately, as i said, the archetype went downhill after these 2.
Narcian was irredeemable scum. the guy from Blazing Sword was so unremarkable that i don't remember his name. and finally there's Valter and Gangrel who are both violent psychopaths who want to cause as much suffering as they can just for the fun of it.

Not completely Leo kind of counts under this archetype but only during birth right where he's an enemy that can't be recruited. The one thing you also can't forget with this archetype is that he supposed to be the opposite of Camus yet similar only in a different shade of Honor because of his patriotism to his kingdom and Country, and that his actions were largely motivated for his kingdom survival and prosperity then really just power for the sake of power. Basically he's the Black Knight to Camus "White Knight".
Berkut was a "Michalis" in that even if he was an arrogant smug bastard with a superiority complex toward commoners common he did have good intentions when it came to his kingdom and did have his redeemable parts that's the part people almost forget what this archetype, though everything went horribly wrong of course which is another thing that comes with this archetype. In the case of Leo let's also add the bonus points that Camilla kind of counts as the Minerva archetype you know since both archetypes are siblings though it's kind of opposite being that Camilla is Leo's older sister , and they have a close relationship. But she's only that archetype during Revelations, starting out early as an enemy and then turning into an ally later. Birthright she's kind of the dark action chick only sympathetic compared to the others who fit that archetype like Sonia. But yeah it's at least good that archetype got used again. Don't honestly I think it was used again during the tellius games, one referring to is zelgius the Black Knight. Who was actually a mix of him and Camus, in that he did have his honorable side and did have his good qualities and did have good intentions and what he was trying to do but he admits some of his darker traits as well especially when it comes to his former master and his former master's son, showing that he is kind of arrogant you see that a lot when he's under the Black Knight persona. Funny enough when you think about it, you're left wondering which is his true personality, when he's the Black Knight or when he's not. To me his true personality is at the end when he's both when he's no longer hiding under the Black Knight identity, basically you get his true blue personality around the last time you deal with him when he Reveals His true identity to Ike. Plus you do get to play as him only in select Maps but yeah you get to play as him just like with the to mention archetypes. That's why I consider BK his own unique archetype, wall at the same time being a mix of two that were meant to be opposites of each other yet the same.
But yeah I agree I do love that archetype you mention. Because I do like the bad guy who does have evil traits but also has good virtues. Because as much as Minerva was angry at her brother for murdering their father, I can't say his decision wasn't wrong his father was blindly keeping his loyalty to an Empire that had shown itself to be completely incompetent and his decision had he not murdered and replaced him would have seen their country destroyed. The only real major negative is how he treated his sister Maria in order to control Minerva, but he does redeem himself by Saving his sister and of course the fact that Maria never gave up on him even when Minerva did, and logically she should have hated him just as much as Minerva. Plus without him Marth would have been s*** out of luck in the finale

    Cool job man.
Personally I'm still sorta new to Fire Emblem(Only playing Lyn's game(can't remember if its Bind or Blaze) Sacred, Awakening, Fates Conquest & Rev( if your going to ask BR its in the crash pit.) & planning to get the Switch for Warriors(& Odyessy) The ones that stood out to me was Galisps, Maria, Cain & Abel, Murdock, Fredrick, & Minerva archetypes.
Keep up the awesome work man.

You know, I've been doing some thinking, which got me to return to this video.
For the Cain & Abel archetypes, it's pretty clear they're the Mario & Luigi of Fire Emblem (especially with Saizo & Kaze) - I mean, hello, red & green.
As for the Navarre archetype, I think that archetype has gone on to other games outside of Fire Emblem in creating their own variations of it. For instance, Guilty Gear has Sol Badguy, and BlazBlue has Ragna the Bloodedge. I think both of these characters are definitely inspired by Navarre in one way or another - they wear red, use powerful swords for fighting, and have brooding personalities that make them beyond antisocial, despite being the main heroes (though in terms of Guilty Gear, I suppose you could say Baiken somewhat also falls into a similar category; same with Jin in BlazBlue). Heck, in some case, Dante from Devil May Cry is kind of a Navarre archetype, though instead of brooding, he's fun-loving and a real awesome guy despite being half-demon (yeah, there's DmC Dante, but... We don't talk about that).

I have been playing along as I watch the episodes and I relize you went on to the bonus episodes without uploading the final. If you made an announcement about that I probably missed it.

I kinda find it funny that the Cain/Abel archetype has the claim that the Cains are generally serious and focused while the Abels are generally laid-back and easygoing, since that generally flip-flops between games and the originals were the hot-blooded Cain and serious Abel, comparatively.
Tana also isn't related to Vanessa/Syrene (if they were related, that'd make the Vanessa/Innes endings awkward...), and none of the Tellius pegasus units are directly related to each other, either. Minor nitpick, but it does make the whole "Pegasus Sisters" idea a commonly used choice rather than a hard rule (as compared to Pegasus Trio in general).
