- The Solina String-Ensemble came out 1973 and was the first "stand alone" electronic string ensemble - the original "string machine". It is a portable, cutdown version of the string ensemble, which is a part of the Eminent 310U organ. It sounds different to the Eminent 310U, although quite similar. It uses "divide-down" organ technology, is full polyphonic and has a very characterful sound.
What you see and hear is the second version with the modulation button - you can switch the modulation off, to obtain a more organ-like sound.
The Solina was a great success in the seventies and was used by many artists on many recordings. The String-Ensemble was developed and produced by Eminent in Holland. ARP bought the rights to sell it under their name. Outside the USA the "ARP STRING-ENSEMBLE" is known as "SOLINA STRING-ENSEMBLE". For the US market, ARP just put ARP-stickers on it...
Many manufacturers tried to copy it (Logan String Melody, Elka Rhapsody, Crumar Multiman, Farfisa String Orchestra, Jen String Machine, Siel Orchestra, just to name a few). Indeed, every organ manufacturer had one to offer...
but the Solina remains the best (or at least one of the best) with its fat, unique and charming sound.
USERS:
Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream) used it on many records (Green Desert, Aqua, Le Park, Underwater Sunlight, etc.), Herbie Hancock (Secrets), AIR (Moon Safari), Mike Oldfield, Richard Wright / Pink Floyd (Shine On You Crazy Diamond), Elton John (Song for Guy), Nick Straker (A walk in the park), Geoff Downes / Buggles (Video killed the radio star), Roxy Music (Both Ends Burning), Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes (Up Where We Belong) the Bee Gees and the Carpenters (on live performances) ...
By the way: Jean-Michel Jarre never used the Solina String-Ensemble on his recordings. He used the Eminent 310U, which sounds different.
It is the best strings sound. Ever.
I'm 15 years old, and I have use the ARP SOLINA and KORG minipops 7 in this track ! czcams.com/video/zjsrTgqfcgQ/video.html
Beautiful sound! Best strings you can get anywhere, from any synth ever made.
What an amazing performance, the last minute is gorgeous!
you might like Adn Ckrystall, I think he even used Minipops 7 on some of his tracks.
I wish i could give more than one thumbs up! I keep coming back to listen to this incredible sound.
Magnific strings !!!!!!!!!!!
A great recording that hasn't been mensioned that uses this synth is Tramontane from Foreigner's Double Vision album. I think Al Greenwood played it. You can really hear the bass section in that recording, too. There's also some other synth sounds on that recording, probably an Odyssey or a Minimoog.
Brilliant.
Solina was my first love, what a gurl. Love this better though. Well done.
Cool thanks for the reply. It's a great sound. Never gets old!
I hug my Eminent Arp Solina :)
So cool. What a lovely tool!
Excellent demo! The ARP/Solina String Ensemble has always been a favorite of mine! I believe Triumvirat used one extensively on the Spartacus album.
I purchased a COTK C1670 Ensemble Generator for my modular synth to obtain a dimilar sound. (do a search for it on CZcams, I have a quick demo up)
Great video!
Thanks very much!
With the Small Stone reminds me so much of the opening theme from A Clockwork Orange...viddy well!

My man has the best string machine on the market and all he plays are some chords
what an idiot... he should play only single notes

I bought it from a newspaper add ten years ago.
Jarre collected together a huge amount of instruments for Oxygene but mostly he used very cheap and simple tools to get the main sounds and grooves.
and recorded in his Mum's kitchen
Info and demo really good thankyou very much : )
Great demo! Thanks.
Very nice demo, thanks!
Some of the things you're playing almost sound like something Tangerine Dream did on their "Green Desert" album. There's a lot Solina String sounds on that album. I also liked the Jarre sounds at 4:50. Very nice.
Sounds great indeed!
Gorgeous demo man.
Yeah! Just what I was thinking.
Wonderful sounds :)
This beauty was used in Bowie's "Sense of Doubt"!
great demo
@AnalogAudio1 He has a Solina in the attic and used it on many recordings. The RS-09 was a good way to emulate the sound, but I only saw it once on stage in 1983.
Yes, heard him talking about it recently
6:02 my man out here making total jams
@LouisvilleTorn8o
The synth in Tramontane that makes the cool vocal "aah" sound is a Vako Orchestron. As far as monosynth's go, Al used an EML 101 both live and in the studio on the first 2 albums. Since the EML-101 had 4 oscillators, a ring modulator, and was semi-modular, he felt like it was more flexible than either the Minimoog or Odyssey. He said that he was a bit intimidated by the more complex ARP 2600 which was more complex and had more features than the EML.
Warm sound!!!!!!
Triunvirat Spartacus and Camel Moonmadness were my first introduction to the ARP string ensemble.
This is a original Jarre sound strat at 4.47
GREAT - Nice machine
I really dig that string sound :-)
I've done something very similar on my D-50, although not as "lush".
I wish the Solina had 61 keys instead of 49 :-p Maybe a DIY project could add these 12 more keys
Nice! I have one of these. Had from new and good as it was when bought. Even have glass music rest. There is nothing like it. Not used much as tend to need authentic orchestral which analogue doesn't provide. But, it's a unique sound especially when put through Roland effects such as phaser. Unusual sound also through H and H flanger (clockwork concubine) anyone remember these🤔
Very 'A clockwork orange' at the beginning in the korova milk bar with the phaser!!
i like how it has tons of room on the top and side for effects pedals..
The Solina String-Ensemble came out 1973 and was the first "stand alone" electronic string ensemble - the original "string machine".
Well....first to market. But the whole idea of the string ensemble synth came from Ken Freeman, who demonstrated his stand alone models as early as 1970, but couldn't get financial/corporate backing enough to release a commercial version until 1974. Sound on Sound had a good article on it.
@AnalogAudio1
And the Solina too - rather apparent on several recordings ;)
What a classic. Hare to be a roadie though in them days. Thank you for sharing. Lovely sound. I love synthetic strings better than sampled. Did Jarre use o9ne of these?.
no, he used the Eminent 310U, the string sound is similar, but better
Thank you so much for telling me. take care. moog.
@AndPlus I know, it was what came to mind and then i read your comment...
check out billy beck from the ohio players..he killed this thing..especially on I WANT TO BE FREE..actually the whole FIRE album..
Best Strings sound ever.
On the VIVA-ROXY MUSIC album , "both ends burning" - oh really you should listen to the whole record - Eddie Jobson on keyboards/violin ... anyway-lots of stringensemble - like mellotron a classic sound- oh dear, i'm just this really old person!
0:48-0:50
Those four notes are very similar to the melody of 'Out Of Body' by Mikron.
It could also be a Fairlight CMI, or even a Roland Jupiter 8, since A Ha used both, in addition to the DX7.
yes
great video!
would you mind telling me which version of the small stone phase you used?
thanks in advance
Great demo this the same model I have ! I was going to sell it but you may just have changed my mind ! Is it possible Mike Oldfield used a solina I think I saw it on a photo on the Ommadawn lp years ago ? Thanks Stef
+SequencerSynth thanks! Yes, in the book "A-Z of analogue synthesizers" Peter Forrest mentions, that Oldfield played a Solina.
hola! que polifonia tiene?polyphony? Buen video ;) GREAT VIDEO!
It is most likely the Yamaha DX-7, as the strings sound colder and more glass-like than an analogue synth would.
@AnalogAudio1 It has his name on it (kind of)
Was this string machine used by Bernard Sumner in Joy Division's song "Atmosphere"?
reminds me of zelda, for some reason I have always liked this string synth, I don't know why it doesn't sound cheesy, only natural. Must be the built in phaser.
5:04 Yum... I hear some Oxygene there.
I'm 15 years old, and I have use the ARP SOLINA and KORG minipops 7 in this track ! czcams.com/video/zjsrTgqfcgQ/video.html
What's the switch on the top right of the Small Stone for?
At the 1:40 part, sounds a little like Styx'x Mr. Roboto. BTW, didn't Styx use this too?
i have one just like this, i bought it painted in black, what could be the value . . .
Tirumvirat Spartacus... this baby is all over.
Hear so much good old TD-sound in the first 3 mins of tweaking...
hi AnalogAudio1
please does your solina get the "Horn" or "Brass" sound ?
thank you dude.
Robert Smith like these ;D
anyone know where i can get 3 red slider caps for one?
Are you really sure that jean ichel jarre never use a solina string machine???
At least in the 70ies and 80ies he never used one.
That sounds 99% identical to a Yamaha F-series Electone
Used in "Dogs" by Pink Floyd?
Frank De Ruiter nope. It was a solina
Yes and in a few other places on that album. The Wish you were here album features the Solina more predominately
Aso Camel Moon Madness...
Im pretty sure..
actually this is the mk 2, it has a modulation (chorus/ensemble) toggle switch. I have the original mk 1 with no switch, better sound
fucking sounds so awesome. can get cheesy with the wrong setting and single notes
@miamigroove Here i think. At "vintagevibe(dot)com" and go to "Miscellaneous Instruments & Parts"
I am tired of guys listing JMJ equipment and trying to recreate all the nuances of his fucking sound.
he killed the minipops-7 and the quijada.
So, help me out here guys. I'm putting together a studio and I want to have lots of choices for my clients, problem is I'm not a keyboard player, I'm a guitarrist. Why should I have something like this in my studio? I mean, from what I can hear this doesn't do anything different than a thousand other analog keyboards could do, am I missing something? It almost seems this was a cheap alternative to the roland's, moog's, oberheim's, etc..
Wrong. Your version is the last one from the early 80s after ARP and Eminent was putting them out under the Solina brand. It has a chorus button (the first version doesn't), leds for the instruments (ver. 1 and 2 don't) and a Solina badge instead of the rebadged ARP SE-IV sticker with metal String Ensemble stickers. It's nice but not as nice as the version 1 and 2s. The oscs also may have been digital in the later versions as they had digital oscs in their organs by then. Do your research.
