  • When an angel told Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God, she answered, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). In this sermon, R.C. Sproul continues his series in the gospel of Luke to explain how this passage has been misused and shows how to interpret it correctly.

As a former leader of the Rosary prayer to Mary, asking her intercession at the time of my death, I say RCC Marian theology is heretical.
As a traveler on Hwy 80 through the Heartland of America where there is a shrine with a HUGE statue of Mary that overlooks the view between two state lines, I say HERE is the serious sin of Idolatry!
My opinion is that Mary was a tremendously courageous girl with sense enough to know she too needed a Savior, Christ, the Only ONE Worthy of Worship and Praise!! And I’m sure that doesn’t offend GOD.

Many thanks for your comment. I was saved out of Catholicism in my mid-teens. As one who visited Lourdes, as a child, I witnessed first hand, and participated in, the idolatry of Mary worship and veneration. So as a former Rosary leader it is sad you knew nothing about your faith especially with statues . In the Old Testament when the ark of the covenant was built God ask them to put 2 9 foot golden statues on the ark of the covenant are you calling God a idolator? Exodus 25:10-22 here is the verse In which thou shalt put the testimony that I will give thee. Thence will I give orders, and will speak to thee over the propitiatory, and from the midst of the two cherubims, which shall be upon the ark of the testimony, all things which I will command the children of Israel by thee.
      Exodus 25:21-22
Now if you were a Rosary leader I hope you know about the miracle of the sun where 70,000 people witnessed it ?

You have done the opposite to go listen too heretics as Ignatius of Antioch taught by Apostle John said in 90 AD wherever the Bishops are let the people be wherever Jesus Christ is so is the Catholic Church. It has always grieved me that Catholics believe they need to pray to Mary to get maximum empathy and response to their prayers. God, who created all things, who has intimate knowledge of each and every one of us so that He knows us better than even we ourselves do, who sent His Son to die for us is shunned in favor of Mary because they think she will understand better and do more, and ultimately, care more for them. It is so sad, one, because I know no one else knows me like God does, no one else cares for me like God does, and two, because Catholics miss out on this type of relationship with God because they don't really know who He is, nor do they know who that brave and obedient servant of the Lord Mary was.

I think what he is saying here is the same view that I have and please correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't feel that it is right for the Catholic to pray directly to Mary and worship her as well. Aren't we supposed to do that ONLY to JESUS or GOD? Yes she was a VERY special woman, but to pray and worship her I feel is wrong. It should ONLY be our Lord Almighty or our Savior Jesus isn't it?
And also, Jesus was and is the son of God, is he not? My understanding about the Catholics is also that they believe that Jesus was and is God himself who was in human form. Am I wrong for feeling this is terribly wrong for feeling about what they are doing with Mary and Jesus is wrong?
Wasn't Jesus God's son whom had the holy spirit inside of him to be able to speak to the disciples and people the way he did? Also, for him to perform the miracles?
God himself, worked in Jesus to do the things that Jesus did and say what Jesus said, am I right?
I recently considered going Catholic until I heard these things. I feel it is so wrong! Have I been taught incorrectly?

You are correct that the Catholic worship of Mary is heinous idolatry. But the Reformed and Biblical position is that Jesus is not only the Son of God, but is God himself, the 2nd person of the Trinity, (John 1:1, John 8:58, Romans 9:5, Titus 2:13, John 20:28, Hebrews 1:3, 2 Peter 1:1, 1 Timothy 3:16). I would recommend a book called "The Forgotten Trinity" by James R White if you want to learn more Linda. Hope that helps.

Mary was also a Tongue-Talking Pentecostal which gathered with the 120 on the Day of Pentecost!
Acts1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Why do Catholics think Mary is an intercessor?
When she tried to actually act as an intercessor by bringing human concerns to Jesus (John 2:3), Jesus effectively rebuked her and ignored her (John 2:4)... Mary's own experience was one of realisation that she could not act as intercessor between Jesus and the human beings around her.
Having realised this, she had to submit to the truth...
Jesus is the intercessor between God and man, and Jesus alone brings the words of God the Father to human beings so that miraculous events may occur.
Having realised that Jesus is the only true intercessor between God and man, and having given up trying to act as an intercessor herself between the servants and Jesus, Mary instructs the servants to listen directly to Jesus (John 2:5). When the servants were dealing with Mary, there was no miracle, but now they are listening directly to Jesus, and the miracle occurs (John 2:6-10).
The end result was that the disciples put their faith directly in Jesus (John 2:11).

If you want to learn the truth about Catholic doctrine about Mary, I challenge Mr Sproul to listen to Scott Hahn. A protestant convert theologian trained and versed in both scripture and tradition. Mr Sproul knows that the tradition of the immaculate conception can be traced back to the 1st century. Luther prayed the rosary. A devotion to Mary not a worship in the sense of putting Mary before God. Study the Incarnation. The word made flesh and dwell on the fact Mary was chosen to be the Mother of God. The Theotokis known from the first century. If Mr. Sproul was just in mentioning the abuses of Catholics, he would have mentioned the many Catholic martyrs at the hands of Protestants. Many of them Catholic Priests who were drawn and quartered because of their Catholic faith.
No worries. The gates of hell will not prevail against God or his Church.

The Catholic Church was started by Constantine, a Roman pagan. For the first 280 years of Christian history, Christianity was banned by the Roman Empire, and Christians were terribly persecuted. This changed after the “conversion” of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine provided religious toleration with the Edict of Milan in AD 313, effectively lifting the ban on Christianity. Later, in AD 325, Constantine called the Council of Nicea in an attempt to unify Christianity. Constantine envisioned Christianity as a religion that could unite the Roman Empire, which at that time was beginning to fragment and divide. While this may have seemed to be a positive development for the Christian church, the results were anything but positive. Just as Constantine refused to fully embrace the Christian faith but continued many of his pagan beliefs and practices, so the Christian church that Constantine and his successors promoted progressively became a mixture of true Christianity and Roman paganism.
