I was station in Germany from 1983 to 1985. I was in the US Army. 3 rd Armored Division 503rd combat Aviation Battalion C company. China has the biggest nukes currently which at 5mt, are only 1/10th of the size of Tsar Bomba. It's far more effective to fire multiple smaller nukes than one big one anyway, so the numbers do make sense.

Russia has about 1/3 of their total warheads that are in a launchable state. most of them are sitting in a state of disrepair or being swapped out for maintenance. The US and NATO has currently most of it's arsenals in a ready state. That is the big difference in all of this. also 3/4 of NATO warheads are mounted on submarines that will be close to target areas when launched so will take out command and control structures very early and will hamper the guidance/radar capability of the Russians main missile arsenal. Remember, NATO is not just the US, there are a lot of other countries in NATO that have nuclear weapons that would be used against Russia under article 5 if it came to that.

It was the 1980s when nuclear war seemed extremely likely. I read two books that dealt with the topic, "Warday" a fictional account I read over Christmas week (I received the book as a Xmas gift) and "Life After Doomsday" which was essentially the first "preppers" handbook.
