Awesome video Sage, I knew you'd get more than 2 views 😂 How long do you keep the tape on for? Is it just for the run or can you keep it on for the next day's run? Cheers for the shout out as well, that was really good of you 👍🏃
lol thx Martin. It's such a specific topic that I doubt it will do much better. As for the tape, I remove it right after my run. I have no idea if it would last for two days, but I don't think that would be a good idea. It would be like keeping your sweaty socks on lol.
Lol! Great taping video! Kinesiology to hold it together. Smart! Better than my duct tape technique! For ultras you may need to add a figure of 8 wrap to make it last for the day, but your method is a great simple way to stay safe for more frequent runs. Thanks for sharing and well done for the leap of faith on that very niche topic :)
@@SafeMotions Love the figure 8 idea for longer runs Stephane. Yeah, I will admit, I was curious to see how this video would do but regardless I am happy I created it. I wish my on-location indoor camera shots came out better, but we can only have so much equipment right, lol.
@@TrailSage Ha! Love how CZcams read that comment about the vid not doing much better and did a complete 180 degrees turn on you :D Glad it picked up! Well done Sage!!! I liked it...
This was gold! Been searching and trying different techniques for taping my ankle to ease some ankle tendon pain, and adding the pre-wrap to this was just the key. :)
Nice one Sage - I used to sprain my ankle all the time on the trails when I first started running. I made strengthening them a part of my weekly routine and they’re a lot better now. I can’t remember the last time I rolled an ankle! 👍 If I’d seen this video back then, I would have been all over this!
I am going for a commando course. I just sprained my right ankle during a light course and was worried if I'd be able to do the advanced course. Gladly, thanks to this video, I think I can now. Thanks
I've since strengthened my ankles, but i used to have to buy shoes a half size too big to fit the extra bulk from my tape job. Hopefully I'll never need it again, but i was fascinated with how you shimmied a traditional tape job to be way more effective for you, and so slim.
I hope you never need to use this technique as well Sandra. Also I think you accurately summed it up better than I did, lol. Thank you so much for watching and the feedback.
This looks like a great way to do it, nicely demonstrated. Those trails would scare me half to death! I think I wrecked my other ankle just by watching you jumping on the rocks 😄👍🏻🏃♂️
Bro, I love this technique. I’ve been using KT tape a lot on my calves and knees but never around my ankles. The timing of this video couldn’t have come at a more perfect time now that the snow is finally melting and I could finally smell spring, which means more trail running for me. I’ll definitely 100% try this taping technique of yours for I have weak ankles as well. Thanks for the tips man. Oh and I didn’t know you played basketball, I’m down for a 1 on 1 game in the future. 👍🏼😬
Awesome, let me know how the taping goes Marvin. As for basketball, it's on! Just give me a 2 month notice before we play so I can get back to form, lol.
I went almost a year without a good “twist.” But my last backpacking trip I got my right ankle 4 times on the last day.. that was yesterday. I’ve never taped before so thanks for the info 👍
Solid advice here Sage! If I get into any issues with my ankles I might give them a go. I have started using KT tape on my shins and it's been amazing. Great shout out for Martin he always does really useful videos. 😎🤘🏻
Right on Ben, hopefully you will never need to do this. As for Martin, he was one of the folks who asked me to make this video, and yes, his content is always on point.
I'm definitely going to give this ago. Unfortunately I've tried the brace but just caused more discomfort and had to remove half way through a run. Great video.
Just a little update, I tried this thismorning and it worked a treat. My ankle felt secure and I felt if I had have gone over on it, it wouldn't have hurt as much or cause more damage. Thanks again. 😊
@@claireroberts9979 This is fantastic news! Glad it worked Claire. I hope your ankle continues to heal. Thank you again for the follow up. If you are interested I now have a dedicated running channel so stop by there if you want to see more running related content. www.youtube.com/@trailsagerunning
My ankles are pretty strong, but every once in awhile I turn my ankle on a root or rock. This would be a great wrap for keeping my ankle sturdy when I’m not quite sure about how it will react the next run. Thanks for the great tip!
Very good info here, Sage! I am going to try this. I have a weak left ankle and have rolled it severely at least two times (torn tendons). I will give this a try!
I know you do a ton of longer runs filled with creek crossings so let me know how it holds up Steven. I would definitely use two strips of kinesiology tape in your case btw.
@@TrailSage Yeah unfortunately I have found the KT tape doesn't hold up well in the water. At least not when applied to skin. This method might help that some. I will let you know though once I try it!
I'm a little ashamed to say, but I've used duct tape over the athletic tape to hold it together. It never comes off and could last forever... Don't apply duct tape on your skin though (I do it but don't recommend it, I'm not very smart). Wrap a figure of 8 pattern around the ankle and foot to prevent the foot from rotating as well. I find that after a couple of km, the whole thing loosens up just enough to stop thinking about it for the rest of the runs.
Great instructional video, Sage! Since my PF injury couple years ago, I do daily exercises to strengthen feet and ankles (similar to The Determined Runner's video). Will keep this in mind for more technical trail runs, might be handy.
Nice video, good to know! Fortunately for about 10 years I had no problems with my ankles. Even when I stepped on the ground directly with my ankle, I continued running without any problems. It may be that I take glucosamine and chondroitin pills every 3 months to restore joints.
I’m watching this after the fact of rolling my ankle. I was the farthest away from my truck and had an up hill section. I started walking and it hurt a little but Im like ah screw it and ran back and all the way up the up hill section. Now its fairly stiff but not bad. I’m gunna have to do this, I got fairly lucky, probably only a grade 1.
Ugh that sucks Rick. I have gumby ankles from my days playing soccer, so I have to tape both up before any serious trail run. If you try the technique let me know how it goes, and if you would change anything. Thanks for watching brotha!
@@TrailSage It wasn’t even a bad section. Flat and it must have been a small rock. I was also in sports and have rolled my ankles many time but its been many years. Also had some new no bull shoes that I ran in the first time outside. Thanks for the advice.
Hi Shivani. Yes. Both my ankles are weak from past injuries and I would never trail run without taping them. Having said that, I am not a doctor so if you are nervous you should consult with them as well.
As for ultras (I've run a few), I think you would skip the pre-wrap because you'd be more worried about it lasting than about convenience in removing after.

what alternative tape i can use that is not kinezio tape
Great question Sofija, I don't know. The athletic tape will not hold on it's own if it gets wet.
thanks for sharing. Would you recommend using this tape even if my ankles don't feel weak?
Thx for watching. If you are worried about twisting your ankle then yes. Otherwise I would not bother with the added hassle.
would you reccomend this for a ankle with. old injury that sometimes acts up. Caude my ankle is mostly healed but still flares up now and than
Hi Shivani. Yes. Both my ankles are weak from past injuries and I would never trail run without taping them. Having said that, I am not a doctor so if you are nervous you should consult with them as well.
I prevent sprains by not trail running! 🤣
Lol well that is definitely the safest solution
What keeps the pre-wrap from sliding down your leg? Since the athletic tape only attaches to the pre-wrap?
As for ultras (I've run a few), I think you would skip the pre-wrap because you'd be more worried about it lasting than about convenience in removing after.
Hey Jim, the pre-wrap has a slight adhesive property to it and stays in place pretty well.
