Alan Carr reads a letter from Roald Dahl about a cantankerous bulldog

- When he wrote this letter to his mother, Roald Dahl was working at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. -- one of hundreds of undercover agents employed by Britain’s MI6 foreign intelligence service to spy on the United States. Dahl’s debut novel, The Gremlins, had been published the year before, and it would be another 17 years until his first children’s book, James and the Giant Peach, set on him on the path to becoming one of the most entertaining authors in history. What is clear from his countless letters home during World War II, however, is that Dahl had been honing his craft for some time.
Alan Carr joined us at the Royal Albert Hall in 2021 to read this hilarious letter.

Fantastic. I didn't think there were many writings from Mr Dahl about his time in Washington working for Intelligence prior the the USA entering the war. His boss at the time was none other than Ian Fleming.

Presentation of this letter was read magnificently with humor in the mannner I feel only Alan Carr can deliver. Brilliant 👏 👏

I've always admired Alan Carr but I've never expected such delivery from him 👏 in combination with the text of this letter it's been a great test of the strength of my pelvic muscles 😆

Alan Carr is a global treasure and I could have listened to him read stories about Winston the farting dog for another few hours easy.
This letter, and how it was read, was epic.
My sister and I tried to trick our bulldog into thinking we had taken her on a car ride. We started it and bounced the car uo and down. When we tried to take her out of the car, she looked me dead in the eyes and peed on the back seat.
Given that most purebreeds were bred for a legitimate purpose in the past, I truly have to look up what bulldogs were actually bred for because they truly don't seem to do anything but mouth-breathe and fart. LOL!!!

They were bred to fight bulls - the snub noses are so they can breathe while their teeth are sunk into a bull's neck for however long it takes the bull to bleed to death. If anybody's interested, the absolute best literary bulldog is Cyril, in Connie Willis's book To Say Nothing Of The Dog.
If you look up pictures of 18th-19th century bulldogs, you'll see they looked much different, since they were actually used for bullfighting.
@@aprilbrown53 I'm not going to say you are wrong, but I am going to say that I now have a mental image of a French Bulldog hanging from a bull's neck ala Prince Flamin' Charles the Corgi Welsh cattle dog wrangling cattle as imagined by Dog, the Border Collie sheepdog who was the star of Footrot Flats.

I'm amazed at the number of people who feed their dogs junk and then complain they smell or who don't properly train and entertain their dogs then complain that they're destructive.

As someone who owned a grumble of pugs, Winston’s habits sound very familiar. I miss my furballs, the weapons-grade farts, loud snoring, and everything. Perhaps I should look into getting a Bully.

Great reading. I feel bad for winston. Bad food and guts. Tried to go outside during the bouts but could only get to the poo room. Humans bred bulldogs leading to their brething issues.

What a wonderful letter describing Winston…great that Alan was chosen to read it…better still Puffin Books and their hiring of sensitivity writers haven’t got their hands on it and decided to try and rewrite it like the wonderful books Dahl wrote.. I’m glad he strongly objected to any changes to his books whilst he was alive…the world can be greatful that Puffin Books finally woke up and recognised the importance of his classic books. ❤️📚💯👏
