    How must more energy does it take to keep your tank that much hotter? I know tanks are very well insulated, but is there a temperature at which you'd lose heat too quickly for it to be energy efficient? In a 65F basement?

    • @tslim250
      @tslim250 Před 6 měsíci

      its in your basement, the lost heat is recovered to heat your home anyways, so the loss would in theory be negligible

      @@tslim250 maybe in the winter time, but in the summer it’d be heating up the house that you’re trying to keep cool

      This is a real problem with a gas water heater. The uninsulated flue pipe that runs up the center of the tank creates its own draft by transferring heat from the tank. The heated air in the flue rises out of the exhaust and is replaced by cool air from around the heater. the hotter the water in the tank is the faster the heat transfer and air movement will be. I have seen some large commercial water heaters with an automatic damper on the top of the tank to reduce this type of heat loss.

      Yeah they make a regular atmospheric gas water heater with a power damper on top as well to trap the flue gas in and pilot heat. Imcreases rhe efficiency just enough to get an energy star rating. We get customers wanting this tanknso they qualify for the.$50 rebate. We charge at least 100 more for tank. It then becomes an interesting conversation

    You know, if you just turned the tank up in temperature, you don't need any fancy gadget, a valve or cartridge is already built into your tap. You can just use more cold water right there at the tap. Why do we need this? Seems like someone overthought a problem that already had a solution. Love the channel, but this is weird and in my opinion, unnecessary if you have faucets.

      Only reason is for safety of kids and or guests. Some people are used to low hot water temp and crank up the hot as soon as they walk in front of a sink.

      Because 120 is the recommended max and 150 will scald you. Whereas you and your family might be able to mix your 150 water at the tap. You will be legally liable for a guest or child that gets scalded.

      @@bustex1 makes perfect sense now that I understand what the problem is. I am used to having burning hot hot from my parents place so I assumed it was the norm.

    seriously, thanks! years ago a boiler type plumber mumbled something about turning the heat up and a valve but I never understood until now!
    Is there an increase in gas utilization?

    Ya know what we did for decades is just simply turn up the tank and just use common sense. I get all the safety arguments but this isn't a new concept.

    • @LearnPlumbing
      @LearnPlumbing  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Definetly Not Common Sense to turn your water heater up to 150 degrees without a Thermostatic Mixing Valve. It's extremely dangerous to have scalding hot water especially around young children and elderly. 150 degree water on your skin just for a few seconds will probably have most people going to a hospital. It's a Plumbing code for a reason. The delivered hot water to Plumbing fixtures can not exceed 120 degrees.

    Not boring, just not for me. This is on all the time so in order to get the full hot water to wash dishes or clothes, it'd need bypassed for those tasks. And no, I we aren't scalded by 150F at all; 180F, then yes. Either way, it's still using the same amount of water and water is more expensive than gas that heats the tank here AND back home (1,600mi away).

    Since you felt the need to comment on my video making the opposite claim, I will take the same liberty. :) FACT: the Tank Booster didn't double anything. The only way your hot water was increased was by turning up the thermostat on your water heater.

      @@LearnPlumbingthis is literally just a mixing valve under another name for marketing. It doesn’t boost the production of a water heater, it just limits the amount of hot water used by the entire home with a temperature setting and a ceramic cartridge. It’s a glorified faucet, and a scam.

      Engineer here. Nothing BS about this at all, they work and they work well. Upping your tank from 120 to 150F is increasing the total stored energy (heat) around 40%
