- 48151 reaches Ais Gill Summit in some style, 19th August 2007. A re-upload of the original 240p version. The slowest zoom speed on that first HD camera was unfortunately rather not slow enough!
Probably the best assault over Ais Gill in the preservation era. Certainly the most dramatic. What a display of power from the loco & hard working crew. JG.
The original was my favourite Ais Gill video. Watching it in HD is a special treat. Thank you.
48151 sure is a firecracker!
Sure is Roy - a fantastic loco.
Gives me goosebumps. What superb work from the crew and locomotive. And that sound!!!
Thanks for going to the effort of re-uploading. Great memories of the days they didn't put a diesel on the rear of virtually every steam trip.
No problem and many thanks. These were very happy days.
Without doubt, the best performance iv'e ever seen at the summit ! Thanks for re editing it, David. Regards, Liam
Thank you very much Liam, much appreciated. It's bizarre what you remember from the video, but I recall that on this occasion I had filled my car with oil the night before, and forgotten to replace the filler cap. Drove all the way to Ais Gill and all the way back, and only the day afer notice the smell/smoke from the engine bay. Woops!
Stunning sight and sound from 48151, great archive clip David.
Many thanks Sam - the wind was just the right strength and direction for once! David.
It was always one of your most memorable clips David and it's good to see the new version.
Thanks Austin, it was a great spectacle but I'd rather have your shot of 71000 coming over here in the sun at 50+mph - spine tingling!
Oh yes, I remember this. Great to see it again, still one of the best performances up to Ais Gill I think (for spectacular effects, at any rate).
Many thanks - I quite agree, and when you look at the speed - one wonders where all the power is going! ;)
Well worth doing David..fantastic and memorable clip...Bob
Many thanks Bob - I thought I'd have a go at 're-mastering', there's so much more to unearth I don't know where to start. A nice problem to have, anyway!
I don't know quite why but I do like this loco and you've caught her superbly doing her stuff David. Maybe it's the small wheels causing a faster than normal exhaust beat or maybe it's just the volume! Thanks for re-doing - looks great. Chris
A real classic!
Thanks for the reload.
Noel
Thanks Noel - I'm starting to become more aware of the benefit of switching to HD when I did - but still have regrets that some earlier footage is in standard def.
Superb shot .worth watching again. amazing performance by 48151. C&A
Many thanks C&A - nice to unearth this in HD after a few years.
I'm not an expert - I just like going on steam trains. Could you tell me: Is there a regular steam service/heritage line along the Settle-Carlisle route? Or are they special runs? Ta.
That must be a good 400 tons gross there - 360 empty - to keep that lot going over Ais Gill at that speed is some going for an 8F!
That must be a fair way down the rack to make that racket!
