Ex-LMS 8F freight loco 48151 blitzes the southbound climb to Ais Gill Summit with a most spectacular display. This view shows her breasting the summit at about 7p.m. on 19/08/07. With the temperature in the 50s, and a cold northerly wind, it felt more like November than August, but was all the better for it!
Wow! That's the sound of a loco working hard! The sound on the footplate would be tremendous
What an amazing display of power from the 8! Superb effort from the fireman and quality driving to. Be great when 48151 is back soon. JG.
Couldn't agree more!
What a joy to see and hear an engine working so energetically. Filmed with your usual skill. Thanks for sharing - Chris
Superb sound from such an extreme workhorse. You can't ask for anything more.
Thanks for sharing.
Jeff
What A Sound!!!! I love these locos just because of the power... it immense!
I travelled behind her in 1989, and the run is on mainline 89. On that occasion, she reached 72 mph, it was the drivers last day on the footplate, and he wanted to go out in style. He was presented with a plaque on Garsdale station. There is one clip near Lazonby i think it is, and you cannot believe how fast the wheels are turning. An amazing engine in the right hands.
72......on an 8F! Ummmmm. The rods would bend in the mid 60s and the loco is limited to 50 anyway.
Awesome...black 8 power. Wish trains would pull in stations like this again
Thanks for posting
Cheers Steffan - indeed, the strength of the engine and steam more generally is exemplified no more so than on climbs like this.
great video there mate but shame about the a poorling weather spoiling your shot
thats has to be one of the best videos iv seen of a loco been worked how it should be worked i love it steam is king 5 stars
this really is a brilliant video, captured the essence of what the s and c is all about, shows the 1 in 100 gradient superbly

Cracking bit of film of a great Loco. You are right up there with ACW71000 and Slatgrille as being one of the best filmers of UK steam on CZcams. Well done.
Some kid falls off his skateboard on you tube and it gets 2 million hits, while this beauty gets 58,000. It's a crime really. Beautiful video, shot expertly, with high quality audio to boot. Well done Linesider.
Keep coming back to this clip. That sound. Wow!
not a fan of steam videos usually but this is the best steam vid i've seen on youtube
Really good video. Good to see the other train going by.
Excellent video! The sound and the picture are great aswell as the train. 5* + Favorite
Great video. 48151 seemed to be storming up the bank and risk breaking her 50mph speed limit.
5 stars from me too: great long shot, fab sound and shows just what the 8F can do on big valve.
As an ardent diesel fan I really must say that this video was little short of incredible! Thank you for posting
That's absolutely stunning, top marks to the driver aswell! Wonderful video, thanks for sharing :-)
1 in 100, which is the most severe gradient on the S&C. A route built with expresses in mind, even if the climbs did last for 15 miles.
Thanks very much for the comments everyone - they're all greatly appreciated, even 12 months on from this epic spectacle.
YARRRR likeing this loco working hard GREAT STUFF AND WHAT A SOUND
5 STARS
Cant beat a Black 8! Superb. Rosegrove shed RIP.
That was absolutely awesome!
Thank you very much Nigel. There is a high def version available here: czcams.com/video/am1hceRF2hk/video.html
Cheers - that's all thanks to a brilliant crew and a gentle northerly wind.
This just shows you the true power of steam. Great shot!!!
Blitzes is the word! Five stars all the way.
Hey linesider I'm a bit late with my comments but this is such a wonderful video that I must congratulate you on your positioning and quality of photography! That loco is a little fighter and makes short work of a 12 coach train. Pretty spectacular. Great work!
Thank you very much Alan (and everyone else for the continued kind comments).
Supperb effort! I remember that loco at Dai Woodhams in Barry and look at it now.
This was shot from a good lineside location and caught the moment well.
Wonderful, just wonderful.
Thanks for posting
Tom
Never thought that a shunting engine that my grandad talks about could be so magnificent and powerful.
They weren't just shunting engines but used to pull heavy freight trains
Wow, that's some footage. I'm much more a fan of American steam, but this was really something, especiall without single slip on the way up, and the throttle wide open! 5/5
She hardly notices the climb! great video.
Thats fantastic, long live stanier
This is a priceless piece of footage! 5* Well Done!
one of the best videos on youtube. fantastic
An awesome video, 5 out of 5.
I just love this footage of the 8F. Brilliant, as is the rest of your material.
I was about to subscribe to your videos when I received an e-mail saying you were subscribing to mine!! Thanks
Very nice video!
awesome video
Simply awesome! 5* without a doubt
That gradient is absolutely cruel to a steam engine! It's mind boggling!
Ah right - I've never fully understood these steam loco's! Thanks for enlightening me.
I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more...
Thanks you - quite a noise she makes isn't it!
Wow! Awesome pic! Thanks for sharing!
This is great!
Usual cracking shot David.
@bolendoc Thank you very much. There must be some some really historic moments in your footage. There are so many runs from those times that I wish I could have captured; 46229 on its Blue Riband runs, 1000 and 5690 double heading... There is some super 8mm footage up on CZcams from acw71000 which is so valuable.
Great filming.
Very, very good video, would have loved to have been there!
Awesome video. I can practically smell the smoke just watching it. 5*
thanks..some of our mainlines over the ranges here are 1 in 35 !
Thank you. I was alone, which looking back seems bizzare!
Holy moly! Superb!
Amazing !
Thank you! Cheers!
lovely sound, lovely place.
Brilliant, pitty about the 158!
Magnificent!!!
That is one helluva climb,,,
I was watching Marsden Rail 27 (the one about the S&C, great DVD btw) and it showed quite a few 8F's double heading freight trains. Would the 8F normally need double heading on the S&C up this part?
Thanks very much. Aye we seem to have found each others videos at the same time - I'm enjoying your 80s/90s shots very much.
great video there linesider especially seeing the 8f working hard on the settle and Carlisle line
Thank you. I'm not sure what speed, I'm guessing about 35 at best?
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that was amazing!
I've just noticed that this carries straight on from "48151 on the Settle and Carlisle with "The Dalesman" 190807
From: sfaadaa", which you'll probably find in the 'related viedos' box. Quite neat, that.
(no, it's not a plug, I just thought it was neat.)
one word - awesome
what is the peak gradient here please?..awesome clip..the poor DMU looks very wimpy !
Bueno...sin nieve tambien se ve muy bien...realmente viene haciendo fuerza...!!! good...!!!
great!
Yeah, although I think she was only doing 30 as there is a 30mph slack over the top at the moment. I think the 2 cylinder beat makes it sound faster than other engines at this speed.
Haha, I don't know, if we all knew how loco's would perform beforehand, it'd be a lot easier to decide what to go and see!
Lovely work, great sound. Eerily similar sound to our much more powerful and bigger wheeled NSW Australian 38 class, comments anyone ? Of course in Australia we don't call 1 in 100 a bank ... 1 in 75s are normal, 1 in 40s rate a mention
What is going on, I get a autominus request from youtube instigated by your company that states that there is a copyright problem, as I was sent the video and told that it was taken by a friend minus any copyright and the music composed by a good friend minus any copyright I would like to know what is the problem.
I have emailed Julian on the email address provided and am told by that person that he is not lineside video despite your name showing up on the bottom of his email.
This is far from being professional.
Powerful
@scotty21h How??
You're welcome - hope you had a good birthday!
Fantastisch.
Nogmaals hartelijk dank en zeer gewaardeerd :)
Brilliant! BTW, I've got some 8F parts off 48364 if anyone wants to buy them.
420 by my reckoning!
@theredraven Depends on what the 8F had to pull up there of course. There's the better part of 500 tons behind the drawbar of this one, & it doesn't look like it's struggling. A single engine should certainly handle 650 tons.
great shot, so cool and professional
but definately too much wide angle as she passes..a very common mistake
joyful
1:08 a train is coming he’d on
जय श्री राम सनातन धर्म व संस्कृति अमर है हिंदू राष्ट अजेय है जय अखंड भारत जय श्री कृष्ण की ... गिरीश त्रिवेदी
Its not so much the 2-cylinder beat as the small driving wheels. You've got 4 beats per revolution on 4'8 1/2'' wheels there, as opposed to, say, 4 beats per revolution on a 6' driving-wheeled Black Five. That's an absolutely cracking shot you've got there nonetheless!
To gainsbourg66: I like the wide angle. I want to actually see the scene as in real life. It is zooming too close that is the mistake in my opinion.
Ta very much. I'll PM you details of my camera...
i bet that dmu driver was green with envy
thats wot i call power pulling at least 300 tonnes
Gorgeous.......
A pity about that DMU!
I bet there were a few people swearing as it spoilt a great shot.
Класс! Уважаю классику
Fanbloodytastic.
Who says a heavy freight engine can’t put up a turn of speed and a grand show. Long time ago but still dramatic. August is supposed to be warm and nice.... oh yes this is the UK I nearly said Scotland. --Amacf
The bobby should have had the decency to hold the DMU at his distant signal so as not to spoil the shot!
Fuck me wot would the Green Party say
@Nigel16032009 Bet he got a lesson on how railways should be!
