The pans do click in firmly into the slots, you just need to push them in by pressing on the edges of the pans.
Oh! You're right! Mine don't really click in as much as stay stuck but yeah, they stop falling around! Wish I had caught onto that, haha! Thanks for the tip!

@@maydavid1061 the brush that comes with it has that weird end on it, you can stick that in between and lift them. However, I usually use something like scissors or a flat screwdriver cause the plastic brush is not very strong and they can get quite stuck in there

I love that Carbon pen! Hadn't heard of those Pentel brushes, they look like nice alternatives to regular cheap calligraphy brushes. I loved those leafy doodles you did when first testing the brushes!

I have that same watercolor paint box :). I am however disappointed at the wasted space in the middle. I also think some colors hardly have 🐷 ment. I suppose I'm just spoiled with my Daniel smith
There's a variant of this set with 3 extra pans in the wasted space, but it's somewhat hard to find. For the price, I wish it was the default set... But heh. I think these have a bit more pigment than Cotman, but I also prefer Daniel Smith. Can't beat a professional range anyway :)
well, as the owner of the both variants of the van gogh pocket box, i must admit, that the 12 colour set feels better in the hand, compared to +3, if you have to hold it. that empty space on top, gives some ident on the bottom, so you can place your fingertips there, which gives a better grip. besides, that empty place can be used as additional space for mixing, not much, not watery, but sometimes it is all what is needed :)

Lovely video Eve! I've been wanting to buy both this set and these brushes for a while now. I keep seeing a lot of Japanese artists use em and I feel very curious! They seem pretty nice to me, and I found them on amazon for $6, a bargain I think. And wow what is that CARBON PEN THING IT LOOKS MAGICAL * A *
I'm glad the issue with the pans falling out has been resolved, it'd be annoying if they kept falling out everytime you went somewhere. I'm thinking of replacing the white with a different colour when I do buy this set. I really like how they perform and also the fact that the palette can come out. I really enjoy how clean these paints look, and they have their own charm to me. BTW really been enjoying seeing your bento sketches on instagram and it was very fun watching you make them here! And wow that painting of the house and the two ladies sitting nearby, omg it's so beautiful! It has such a lovely feeling of light. And the drawing of the boy is super pretty. He looks very cute and cool. This was very enjoyable and calming to watch. Thanks for making such a lovely video!!
The carbon pen is just the best, seriously! Mine never clogs up, ink is waterproof, nib works perfectly and it's refillable via cartridges. Oh, and it's fairly inexpensive. Seriously.
I'm keeping the white in at the moment because at some point I want to experiment with it. Gotta find a way to use all that useless white, amirite? T_T These colors are really nice, Vangogh is a super good student brand. They have a really nice range.

Ohh I see, makes sense. Recently I tried using some of my white to turn the watercolours into opaque paint. It was an interesting effect, but not as opaque as gouache tends to be. And when diluted it looked like watercolour on the most part. But yeah white can be used to make highlights and stuff. I hope you find some good use for all that white!
Yeah Van Gogh seems really great. I've seen so many artists rave about them, you included. I'm thinking of getting this set, it's pretty cheap on Amazon UK right now. But I can't seem to find that darn 15 colour set, frustrating really, especially when you look at the blank space in the top part of the palette.
I'm really interested in trying Rembrandt watercolours too, but they're quite pricey. Hopefully sometime!

I tried to find the 15 colors set too with no luck whatsoever :| Why even make the 12 one, just make the 15 one and everyone will be happier XD Could've really done with the extra quin rose, prussian blue and burnt umber. Besides, the 12 colors set is more like a 10 or 11 colors set because of the darn white and payne's grey/black. Or IDK, have the empty pan space to add in some colors.
I don't use opaque colors a lot, but I think adding a good white gouache to watercolor works better than going for the white watercolor. Chinese white is supposed to be a "mixing white" and Titanium white is supposed to be the more opaque of the two. BLERGH I say.
I got some Rembrandt through a good deal (for Canadian people) hansbergolas shared in the comments :) I'm eager to try them!
DUDE I totally agree with everything you said!! Why even bother when it looks like such an eyesore....that empty gap ugh. And yeah man the extra 3 colours would be great to have. I agree, it really is more like a 10 colour set [like most sets sadly]. Really annoying. YEAH even keeping empty pan space would be good..it's like they're saying: I ain't givin you more paints and you can't add more either.
So lame sigh.
Oh yeah, you're right, it can be used for a lot of things. And yeah Chinese white is really not opaque enough. IDK WHO EVEN DECIDES THESE THINGS
Oh man right after I made the comment, I scrolled down to read other ones and saw that thread! It was so kind of them to share. I'm so glad you managed to get some! Can't wait for your review [if you make one]. I've seen some reviews of them and they look good. But yeah for the Rembrandt 12 set, there's no white atleast but it does have a Payne's grey though.
Making a review is the only way I can justify buying yet more paint (with money I don't really have), haha XD
I've looked at the Rembrandt sets and I'm pretty sure they are good, but they have a lot of pigments that I usually don't gravitate towards, like cadmiums (due to their opacity). Payne's grey can go really wrong, but at leeeast it's not pure black. I'd love a Payne's grey with no black pigment in it, that'd be amazing.
Your bento elastic gave me the idea to use a cut up sock for mine. I wear them as cuffs, and use them as watercolour rags. Got one folded up piece in the weird empty space in the back, and one around to keep it shut. Somehow that design flaw now makes my pallette better.

My box is just fine. The pans never fell out and the lid has never opened. This was my first watercolourkit and since then I stepped up tot artist grade paints. So I removed the pans and bought empty pans for a custum pallet.

I had this same watercolour set, except it had 15 pans. But I had same problem with lid not snapping shut. It was my travel set and it wasn't nice to find wet pans loose in my bag.... I really like your channel :)

The 15 pans set is not available all the time unfortunately, or I would've clearly gotten that one. It's really a bummer that the lid doesn't snap shut, or it would've been quite a practical little box.
Not to trigger another watercolour purchase, but Above Ground Art Supplies in Toronto has Rembrandt Artists paints for $4-6 for the 20mL and $2-3 for 5mL!!! I could not believe it and ordered several :) Since you're in Canada you might be interested! They have an online store too.

I was staring at the paints again, in true hoarder fashion, and I was wondering why they have such an oddball color selection..? Is it the very last that they are trying to get rid off and won't stock again? (Do you know?)
I'm not sure, but that's what I suspected. I know there is a much wider selection of colours in by Rembrandt, but they only only had around 24 in stock. I noticed though it said the website only reflects the inventory in one store, and for other branches they said you could call and check. It also said if you want to ship with a different carrier you can call them about that, so maybe there's a cheaper option :)

I bought 10 ml tubes which are more economical. I put them into pans in a metal box. They dry quite hard but lift easily.
I know this is an old video, but something i've noticed in a lot of student grade paints is they always include a white for some reason, literally the least used colour in watercolour.
I usually take them out and fill it with sth else.
I usually take it out too and replace it with a pan of white gouache that I use for highlights ^^
to fix the locking issue, place some soft rubber between the lock and the box, so the rubber would act as a spring. that might help, if the locking dent is not worn off.

the numbers are on the side of the pans. starts with a G. on the colorchart of the website of Royal talens you can see the name and pigment used.

I checked my pans and they have no writing on them. They only have the branding on the bottom...
only the pans that come wrapped are marked Gxxx, at least that is my experience. the both pocket boxes, that i bought, came with pans not marked in any way, and the tin box palette came with pans wrapped and marked.
And that carbon pen is a great pen! I got mine from amazon for about 6 dollars or so, including shipping. I love te draw and sketch with it.

So far, this seems to be one of the most popular choices for a cheap starter palette, along with the Cotmans and the Derwent. Which one do you think gives the better results based on colour choice and quality and, of course, money?
Haha! I make myself hungry drawing food, if only I had a chef handy to make me such pretty food XD
I didn't know Derwent made a watercolor set? I'm not overly fond of Cotman, so my vote goes directly to Van Gogh. They are a bit more expensive than, say, the small pocket box from Cotman, but I think they are worth it. The brush is really super nice, too. (And I'm being mean, but I've use Cotman for a while and it was ok. Going from super low-quality to Cotman was ok, but going back down to Cotman from Daniel Smith is very frustrating.)
Oooops, my mistake, it was Daler Rowney's Aquafine... Lately I've been using a lot of Derwent's paper, so that's why the name stuck in my mind.
And I agree, from DSmith to Cotman is definitely a step back. But I use them for different things, one I keep for artwork I care about and the other as a battle set of sorts, so I can kind of adapt mentally not to be disappointed.
I bit like when you do a 'cheap art supply' challenge, you kind of know that you cannot expect awesomeness, but you can still do art. :D
I understand, but still. I got too many decent palettes that look at me all angry when I hover over the cheap stuff XD Just a personal thing, too, I mean a lot of people dislike Holbein and I've grown to really like their range. If Cotman was more what I expected of paint, I'd be ok with it too ;)
I have yet to put my hands on an Holbein, same as M.Graham. Some brands simply cannot arrive where I live, and I really have no intention of spending 50EUR + 25EUR of shipping for a pan set that can be found in the country of origin for 30EUR. (Especially since I spend less taking a plane and going to physically buy it in England instead of getting it delivered where I live.)
Have you tried the Professional WN? I have a set of pans, but I have to admit that I haven't played a lot with them, especially since I'm worried all my tubes will dry on me, so I'm mostly using those.
Have you tried ordering from Jackson's in the UK? Are the shipping fees that bad too? What are the brands that are readily available to you?
I have tried professional W&N, it's generally good paint. It's kind of exactly what I'd expect of professional paints, but nothing extraordinary about it. M. Graham is still more pigmented imho, and Daniel Smith more creative with their range, but W&N is also good. They have a few very noteworthy colors, like their Rose Doré, but overall they are a good reliable brand that will not surprise you all that much XD It's very expensive over here so I get mine at Jackson's, where I pay about half of the retail price here.

Thank you, I thot I was the only one who couldn't get a dark value from the colour selection. Also really annoyingly, they dry a lot lighter. I must say I prefer the Cotman to this.
Random thought, but I think its strange that the van in Van Gogh isn't capitalized on their packaging, I wonder why......

His name was Vincent van Gogh. Van translates as of/from. Same thing with Italians: Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, Piero della Francesca, etc.

Hey, thank you for your review. I had a question in my mind. I'm a beginner and confused between the Winsor and Newton Cotman sketchers box or this van Gogh set with 15 pan? I stay in India and the van Gogh set is slightly cheaper here than the Cotman ? What would you suggest I should get?
Hi! Thank you! Personally, I prefer Van Gogh, a lot. If you have access to the special 15-pans set too, I can only recommend going for that one. The paint is more pigmented and I've enjoyed using my Van Gogh set a lot more than my Cotman paints :)

It`s funny to see how different sets from the same brand can be. I also got Van Gogh watercolours, but I bought them as a 11 tubes set with brushes, masking fluit and some other stuff.
I don`t have the White and the Sap Green, but I`ve got Quinacridone Rose.
I like them for sketching, but I think they look a bit unnatural if you don`t mix them properly.
I'd much rather have Quin Rose than White, for sure.
I think that's a recurrent issue with most 12 colors sets, since they often have similar colors, in that they are all very basic colors that look really unnatural on their own. A good way to learn how to mix, I guess :)
Yeah, White is such a unnecessary colour in watercolours. But it`s in almost every beginner set D:
Mixing is a really important skill. I always have the feeling a lot of people rather buy a lot of colours than learn mixing.
It's true. Starting in painting with a large palette is not as helpful as starting with like 6-8 colors. It's easier to add in more colors when one has a bit more experience.
I find that too many colors often lead to a pictures that have, big surprise, too many colors in them XD

I'm so confused 😂😂😂😂 I've been watching a lot of reviews of around $1-18 worth water colour palettes that'll be good for beginners.. but ofc, I still want good quality and I wanna experiment. People are really giving me a lot of options to choose from.. I mean, Daniel smith, w&n, van gogh.. and ofc a lot that I've forgotten about ._. I'm really stuck. And this is my only opportunity to pick a palette bc I'm by my mother, and she buys a lot of things online and it's soon my birthday, so I don't wanna waste this opportunity..
See if you can get a palette by White Nights, they are often quite affordable, feature good paints in full pans. The small Aquafine sets in rectangular metal tins are really good as well :)

I live when paint sets include Payne’s Grey. But these sets need to stop including a white paint.
Why? White is a really nice colour to have and i have 2 different types in my mix and match pallet

I use Platinum Carbon ink! I have both the ink in a bottle, and I use the Platinum Carbon Pen in extrafine. It comes with cartridges of the ink and it's completely waterproof. Platinum's Pigment inks are waterproof too, they come in blue, red and sepia/brown :)

Did you see any difference between the van gogh half pans and the tubes? I had the winsor and newton cotman watercolors experience and I really don't like them, I'm afraid of buying this set and become (obviously not the same quality) the same bad experience and you know, the pigment in the tubes is different and more vibrant, but I just do not know what to do and also in my country both options are really expensive so I don't want to waste money by going wrong, any advice?🙁

In general, I find that paint from tubes is much easier to rewet than premade pans (for the extruded pans, the ones that look like little paint squares popped into an empty pan). I have Van Gogh tube paints in a palette and they dried well and rewet well, so I would probably suggest buying tubes. By buying open stock tubes, you can also try a few colors first (3-4) to see how you like them, so it's less of an expense if you were to dislike them. I hope this helps! :)
