Renowned folk musician Michael Hurley brought an impressive crowd to his rainy Sycamore Sessions set at the 2022 Nelsonville Music Festival.
Hurley has played the Nelsonville Music Festival every year since 2008. He started writing songs at age 13, and he still performs the music of his youth at 80.
In this set, Hurley played a variety of his own repertoire, stretching from 1964-2021, along with two covers: Booker T. Washington “Bukka” White's “I Am in a Heavenly Way,” and “Sweet Apple Cider”, released by Doc Starkes and His Nite Riders in 1955.
Of his earlier songs, Hurley performed “Slurf Song” from his album released in 1976, “Have Moicy!” (Rounder Records), a collaborative effort with the Unholy Modal Rounders and Jeffrey Frederick & the Clamtones. He also performed “Portland Water” and “In the Garden” of “Long Journey” (Rounder Records), also released in 1976.
“Portland Water” was a fitting song to be performed as the audience sat contently as the rain drizzled down upon them for the duration of Michael Hurley’s set. -Lily Manoukian

All performances took place during the 2022 Nelsonville Music Festival, which is a production of Stuart’s Opera House.
I am writing from Japan.
About 30 years ago, we exchanged letters several times and received cassettes and other items from the United States. I think you remember that.
I watch your videos from time to time. Folkways' first album is also here. I love your indescribable sound. Please keep singing thinking that your life was wonderful. I also saw an article about you in the New Yorker magazine. Kiyohide Kunizaki
There are lots of Hurley fans in the countryside outside of Ogaki in Gifu. Come pay us a visit!
