Pachelbel Canon in D Fantasia for hammered dulcimer

- Timothy Seaman performs his hammered dulcimer solo fantasia based on the chord patterns that form the framework for Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Baroque canon. A blog post has sheet music for this at timothyseaman.com/index.php/ti....
The chord pattern happens to include all six of the primary chords in a diatonic key center: I, IV, and V are major triads; II, III, VI are minor triads.
A version of this arrangement including flute improvisations by Seaman can be found on the final track of his holiday CD Profound Joy at timothyseaman.com/index.php/di...
The original idea was inspired by George Winston's piano interpretation on his holiday album December --- especially the 'ragtimey' approach. Thanks, George! - Hudba
As a musician, I am just floored by the dedication that would be necessary to play this instrument. Imagine tuning it to begin with!
@@ninasvids507 what do you call someone who hangs around with a bunch of musicians?
A percussionist.
@@andyhiscox2750 since piano is percussion that makes me laugh =P
They really arent hard to tune once you have the tools
Here is the same piece done on a similar instrument but played slower and in a different manner.

Ever since I knew what this instrument was I had always wanted to pursue learning it. Unfortunately I was not gifted musically or with coordination, but this remains my favorite instrument nonetheless. I stumbled across this video while scrolling through the platform and am completely awestruck with how unbelievably beautiful and amazing this was. Listening to this and watching you play took me back to a simpler time and gave me a true moment of mental respite in my chaos filled life. This was truly a blessing. Thank you for your talent and devotion to this wonderful instrument.
Thank you for the comment! The hammered dulcimer is actually one of the easiest instruments to learn to play basic things on, especially for people who have not done music before. It's worth trying!
I just stumbled on a video of the hammered dulcimer and kept right on watching - this is the 5th or 6th in a row!
One of my favorite pieces of music perfectly performed on one of my favorite instruments ❤
it's been 7 years an i'm still watching this video on repeat and it continues to blow me away, amazing
Wow
Same tho
Simply one of the most beautiful renditions of one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Wow...
Oh my, you have two gifts: the obvious musical one, and encouragement in your response to ninetieslovechild, God bless you!!!
you truly make that hammered dulcimer sing perfectly
Each of my daughter's wedding marches have been to this song. It is a very emotional song for me, to walk 3 beautiful girls down the aisle. And in July, my eldest granddaughter will repeat this for her daddy to enjoy.
Absolutely gorgeous sound! Love the stylization here! At one point it sounded like a crystal waterfall of sound cascading across my ears! So calming! Why was this only suggested to me now?
My husband is in the process of making one of these for our grandson. Just sent him the video I think he will love it. He was very interested a few years ago when we first showed him what they looked like and spent a lot of time webbing around listening to hammered dulcimer music. this video is so inspiring!!!!
So happy to be welcoming you to Ohio once again this Memorial Day weekend for our DulciMore Festival 21 in Lisbon. This will be posted on Facebook - hoping to get many more people interested in attending and seeing/hearing your beautiful music in person.
It's truly amazing when some woods, two sticks, and some strings all encased in a wooden box...come together with a master's touch. This is joyful - and healing - and beautiful. I imagine when the HD is played by a master, one of them says, "Shhhh... everyone! The LORD is LISTENING!"
Thank you, Mr. Timothy Seaman!
Superb: a silver rain of joyful sound.
Came across this vid and I don't even know why I am in tears...it's just so beautiful!
I'm with you...not much makes me cry and this does....

Pierces the soul. So indescribably beautiful.
Most beautiful music ever!
This has lifted my spirits. Joy and admiration are filling my life, listening to this. Thank you so much.
Simply magical!
Beautiful. Thank you.
Beautiful. "Canon" is my very favourite classical piece and the way this is played around on the dulcimer is just amazing. I think I might have found my new favourite instrument!
Wow, my respect. It sounds so so beautiful, love it so much!!!
Was listing to the usualy heavy metal in the background. Not sure how it got on this... I was stunned @1:40 Glad CZcams steered me here. Such artistry.
This song has had me moved ever since I was a child, every single time I heard it play ... And oh man... You took it to another level there... I'm afraid I just can't help hitting that replay button. Lord, you are incredibly amazing.
I of course subscribed to your fantastic channel, and I pray you will bless us with more of your talent.
Best regards.
You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent
Tim plays hammered dulcimer like a mad lad it's unreal
I play guitar, bass, and picked dulcimer at the moment and I’m looking to pick a few more up soon. The sheer number of stringer instruments that exist in the world fascinate me
Study Brian Jones.
Thank you so much for sharing your score. I picked up a masterworks hammer dulcimer, with no music background (I am a self taught drummer) I find it such a challenge to play your Canon in D on a hammer dulcimer. I am two months into this and liking every bit of it. Thanks again, all glory be to Jesus
Just exquisite!!!
That is so amazing
Beautiful, brilliant music, beautifully played on an incredible instrument. Had me in tears. Thank you.
salut, bonjour! Vraiment c´est formidable cette musique, Felicitation à Vous!

Hello Mr. Seaman, I came across your performance of the Cannon on hammered dulcimer. You did a wonderful job on this wonderful musical piece. As I listened, I the sound was so perfect, that it felt as though I were listening to a music box. I enjoyed your work on the dulcimer very much and I have added this piece to my computer favorites. Best wishes from Central Florida, USA. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to your future work...Will Ortiz

You are a true inspiration !!🍀Vj
We have included a few of your videos to our bedtime routine. It is so relaxing to listen to you play such beautiful music. My two year old son is a huge fan! Especially to the videos with the harp duet where you also play the flute. So beautiful!
Stellar!!
Great playing, wonderful arrangement
NO MERE WORDS TO EXPRESS HOW LOVELY

WHEN WORDS FAIL MUSIC SPEAKS WITH
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
NOTES!!!!
MERRY XMAS!! TQ
I came here just out of curiosity and I'm glad I did. This is beautiful!!!
Sr.!? This is insanely gorgeous! Your talent is indescribable!
Superb.
The dulcimer sounds better than most on CZcams. Sounds like the reverb was not overdone.
Thank you! Actually, there's NO extra reverb here --- just the ringing of this Dusty Strings D600 dulcimer, one of the first made and thus very seasoned in tone. There's a little bit of sound from the walls of our living room, but it's mostly just the dulcimer. Dusty Strings has about medium sustain length among different brands of dulcimers, I think.
Timothy Seaman Thank you
Bravo 👏👏👏
I think this will gonna be one of my favorite and most listened videos of all the time... I'm delighting neighbors from hours... saw one of them came out and was stunned to listen :)... Thank you for your music, extremely talented man... Love from Italy 💓 🌄 🌻

I am having my review for my board exam and I'm really curious what dulcimer looks like and I was stunned! Such a good instrument and a talented musician! Clap clap!
just beautiful........
I am jealous of of your talent. Your a stud! ;-) God bless you! I shared this on Facebook with the proclaimed determination to learn this song so that I can compel my young daughter to master t the instrument! She was diagnosed in utero with a condition that was initially explained as completely hopeless but after she was born those same doctors call her a miracle baby! If I can achieve enough skill to demonstrate this instrument to Emma, then I have no doubt she will learn to master it! Good bless you, Gentleman!
Thank you sooo much for the sheet!!
Lovely. Thanks so much. It truly makes me want to learn to play.
One of my all time favorite pieces, and you posted it on my birthday. Feels like a gift!
Absolutely gorgeous........
stunningly beautiful thank you for sharing
Beautiful sound!
I am kicking around the idea of learning to play the hammered dulcimer, this is pushing me more and more to it. What a beautiful piece. How long before I could play like this? 1 yr, 5 yrs, never?
I recommend getting a dulcimer and starting to explore what comes easiest to you to make sounds that please you the most! Everybody seems to go a different direction on the instrument. Pachelbel's Canon itself is impossible to play on the dulcimer, so I decided to use chord structures and fragments of the melody to make a flowing arrangement. One technique I'm using in four of the sections is a ragtimey separated-hands method that, once you get the knack, comes very easily from then on, like riding a bike. Another technique that is quite doable is the fast arpeggios from right to left, just a repeating zigzag that looks a lot harder than it actually is. The biggest factor, though, is expression: every note is voiced with a certain kind of strike to make the piece come alive, rather than playing too evenly like a music box or harpsichord. This is especially doable when you use a powerful repeating set of chords like the ones in Pachelbel's Canon! They're D A Bm F#m G D Em A over and over.
@@timothyseaman Thank you for this explanation and enlightenment. Rather than “prescribing” a fixed “how long” answer, you’ve given a response both instructional and inspiring to all who aspire to reach a level of playing that can begin even to dream of playing this piece. Thank you, and thank you for sharing your music - this is permeatingly beautiful.
@@timothyseaman I am awestruck!
Absolutely incredible!
I received an early Christmas gift, a Hammered dulcimer. It’s very large and after listening to this I thought WOW, I have a lot to learn. I’m like you I can only hope to play this song or I’ll just watch him..Amazingly Beautiful
There are tricks that make it easy to get great sounds in a short amount of time.
@@timothyseaman
I need to learn the tricks.I can play my mountain dulcimers & recorded 12 songs that I wrote. I would like to do the same with my Hammered Dulcimer. I don’t read music I just play by sound. I will have to keep it til I finally get what chords everyone starts in. Thank you for your response ❤️
This is so beautiful my brain cannot comprehend it
Great sounding music! Thank you.
SIMPLEMENTE BELLISIMA MUSICA PARA NAVIDAD!!!
