I was at the Vanguard the night Joe's father sat in. I was a member of the North Texas State University One O'Clock Lab Band and we were on tour in the area and were able to get in to play the opening set before Mel Lewis' band came on. I remember Joe playing with his father that evening on Body and Soul. It was so special and Joe was absolutely beaming with pride that his father was there and that he was able to play a tune with him.

I moved to NYC with Lovano and into that loft. It became a music house of growth like many homes in those days. The lofe burned down. I remember showing up with crowbars and climbing the scaffold NYC fire dept. And tore off all the plywood windows from the dept. SO now everyone with light can see what the damage was really was. Was deep ...

When I was a kid on the east side of Cleveland, I hung out with Joe's brother and every time we asked him where Joe was, he would say "Joe's practicing his sax"! It's been so cool to follow Joe's career and know that he came from the same "hood" as me. We are blessed to have this amazing talent come from our area in NE Ohio.
    Cheers to you Joe Lovano!!!

Never knew that Carmen Castaldi was a friend since high school. Successful jazz musicians don’t really reach back into their past and pull others up. I have a whole new level of respect for him now .

Joe is one of the most real people playing. His background is his gift. And he shares it either playing or just hanging with him. He is 100% genuine.

Thanks for sharing. Joe is one of the most original modern tenor saxophonists. His 1990 Blue Note release 'Landmarks' is one of my all time favorite Jazz records. You can hear his passion for the music still undiluted, in his own words.

What a great interview! Thank you Matthew and thank you Joe Lovano. I am happy to have met Joe once in Lviv, Ukraine. I was so unprepared, so I just enjoyed the company. This talk puts me in the grander scheme of things. I have learned a lot! Time to catch up! Thank you!

I love the mix of logic, and the magic he finds with his ear: the colours and shapes, the notes not in harmony books, Dewey and Joe Henderson could switch gears like that.

Thanks for this interview. I only saw him once, playing in John Scofield's band at Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival in the 90's. Of course, then, I had to get the album.

Why are audio interviews so difficult for musicians to get correct on CZcams? I'll have to wait to watch this in my closet with speakers.
