Super grateful for my friends over at Skymill Studios for working with me on this insightful video!
Happy to work with you!
@@SkymillStudios Was a real blast 💜
I am going to subscribe to skymill studios right now!
@@SkymillStudios Congratulations guys for your Kickstarter, and thanks for the video @Reece Geofroy!
@@SkymillStudios Congrats, and hopefully more indies get recognition as you have. Great work!
No lie, even with the game not finished, it looks absolutely INCREDIBLE. The monsters shown, the battles, the fact you can really control the monsters, open world, its like a dream come true game a lot of people have wanted for a long time in this genre! 100% getting it when it's available! You guys really are working on a true gem~
(please have nice camera controls that follow the player nicely 🤞 thats all I hope for)
I'm sure they will do a fantastic job with their project!! I'm routing for them too haha
i have a feeling Reece is going to raise 1,000,000$ now...
Please God 😂😭
The studio: *makes $1M in funds*
Taxes and fees: *is for me?*
Do they get taxed on KS money?? Good question.
@@wmurray003 Yep, you do. At least I paid taxes in Canada.
@@ExpertMagicNetwork That sucks...
Lovely interview and interesting insight into what the 'game dev dream' is in reality.
For sure! Glad you enjoyed our collaboration 😉
Thanks for this, I learnt some really useful tips on setting up a Kickstarter, timing it right and spreading the word.
Glad you found this useful Tauheed!!
It's so cool to hear success stories of people living the game dev dream. That will be you and Firith Studio next!! Awesome video!
Thanks kiwii! Let's do out best and make history! 🔥🚒
Great interview, thanks for sharing! It's really inspiring to hear about their success, especially with the sea of negativity around some of the more recent game crowdfunding campaigns. The Skymill guys seem really nice and easy to root for. Wish them every success with their game!
Yes absolutely! Glad I could out this together for the community!
Thanks for sharing Reece! That was super insightful and it was really nice to hear about their experience!
Thanks Manisha! Really hope this gave people a new perspective 😄
This inspired me to start building my own game on Unity. I never programmed before, but I will take my time. Can't wait for this game
That awburn doggo part looks too good to be realtime
It might be crazy, but I've fantasized about a game like this for a while, I've also been looking all over the place for something like it. Guess I wasn't wrong, as it seems to be gaining all sort of traction. I will be keeping a close eye on it.
Great interview here.👍👍From my personal experience of "is the indiedev dream worth it", I also say hell yeah but only IF you love what you're doing. You really have to love making games and be willing to learn a LOT, fail a LOT, and spend a lot of time with it. It's not easy but if you love what you're doing who cares if it's not easy.
Completely agree with this NHG! Strong message 🙂
Wow, very nice video! Currently trying to make a game with my friends, this kind of stuff helps a lot keeping me motivated! hope to see more! Thank you
Thanks giampaolo! Glad you liked the interview I put together 💜 More motivation coming 🔥
Thank you for doing this. This gives me a new perspective on my approach to game development.
Glad you enjoyed!
I'm looking forward to play this game, and hope they succeed even more. I was just thinking about how this game might be coming along, when this video popped up.
The only gripe I have with their game is that I believe it would look a bit better with thin line cell shader. That would give it more of a drawn look rather than the smooth look they have currently.
Amazing interview!!! this fills me with so much inspiration!!
YAYYY! Glad it did 🙃
Ayyyy new upload! Let’s goooooo! HYPE
hype hype!!!!
Very well made, I love to see these perspectives!
Glad you liked it!!! Definitely was a great story to hear about 😄
This is awesome. I really enjoyed this style of video!
Thanks Stephen, happy to hear you liked it! :D
Great video dude!
Thanks bro! 💜💜
It's good to hear these stories!
For sure! Stay driven 😉
Wow ok, good job. I never realised how good a game could be that I've never even heard of, this looks so fun!
Nice job dude!!!! I wish I had the same success with my game. You are great !!!!
Those opening words... So real... THANK you.
"Money doesn't matter." I hate that. Yes money DOES matter. Like you said, "We want to wake up, make games, but also get paid enough to NOT STARVE." Hahah~! Exactly!
7:14 Dude, what drew me in was real-time combat in a pokemon-like. *REAL-TIME COMBAT! HOLY BALLS! YES!!!!!! AND it's open world? That's icing on the cake!*
VERY excited for your game! Can't wait to see it!
Very real at the end too. You have to keep learning, improving, and making better games.
You want to sell games? Make a good product.
Excellent video and interview.
It looks awesome!
Can't wait to copy this video! I have a good friend doing a successful Kickstarter soon. So he can fill in for Kindred. 😃
So wholesome, love you buddy 💜
@@ReeceGeofroy Yeah! I hope fairlii appreciates it ;)
@@barj I hate you 🤩
Fantastic video! For anyone on the fence, I highly encourage you to check the game out! Skymill is the real deal and Kindred Fates is truly a gem in the making.
yesss definitely check out Skymill Studios! Brilliant people behind the company!!!
this looks really really amazing
I'm a simple man, I see KF I click.
Hahaha yeah, pretty dope game!!!
@@ReeceGeofroy Really good video btw :) I like your editing!
This was a really cool interview
this game has another 2 years and already looks better than pokemon legends. Very excited
Amazing video Reece!
Thanks Sung Jin! Hope you liked it :D
@@ReeceGeofroy oh uh yeah, it's me Kanav, lol.
I'm trying to get into this business but my dream might be a bit different, a lot of people dream of publishing a game and become rich, I just want to be "free", just earn enough money that I can work on whatever I want and choose What I want to make next, that for me would be my dream life and I hope I can achieve it one day.
You got this! Routing for you 🥳
@@ReeceGeofroy Thank you, sir :)
I've literally wanted this since 1998 lol!
This is as close to the game I want pokemon to be but probably never will. Part of me wants to MAKE the game myself, but my own lack of follow through means I am stoked to see someone putting it into practice. I can see some things I would have done differently, my combat system would be heavily movement based, with diving under water to dodge attack, wall running for ariel attacks, there would be an almost rhythmic flow similar to the Batman Arkham series, but to keep it in balance, there would be, not cooldowns, but recharging energy, for special attacks, so you could spam them like any other attack, but they would be less effective than if you spent some time dodging and recharging your energy... But yeah, I just want direct control of the creatures and in a non turn-based combat, preferably with loads of exploration, story quests, puzzle solving, all that good stuff. Playing a lot of Genshin impact lately, I think elements of that game would work too. Anyways yeah I'm not likely to make the game of MY dreams, so, I cannot wait to see the fruits of this game come to be
Awesome Video! What I didnt get was the specific timing tho. Like did they put their kickstarter page on and a few days after they went with backerskit? Or did they negotiate something beforehand? I really feel stressed out about just putting your page out there and hoping that some marketing dudes or publishers will contact you to get your funding :0
Definitely a lot of prep needs to be done before hand with getting attention to the right crowds, running ads if you can, etc, but in this example they did reach out to backer kit later on in their funding campaign! Don't stress just research and prepare months before hand and you'll be okay!
I want to play this!
Hope the game makes a hundred grand or more. Best of luck.
Thank you wheels 🔥💜💜💜
Working on an open-world monster battler RPG for the past 2 years, all because Nintendo won't make one with Pokemon.
Kindred Fates is a great inspiration for me and shows that there is interest in this type of games. It's really assuring.
Really nice video!
Thanks Fluffy!!!
Some of this game's art looks like those really high detailed roblox games.
You know, I'm about to start really creating my own game and I never thought about raising funds for it. I was just gonna go nuts and kill it myself. If I were to ask for any $ I would make sure every $ of it went towards the game. I have a lot of new ideas that I see aren't really being utilized. I am actually happy that I heard the term Perma Death in this video. I thought of incorporating many things into my game over the last few decades and now gaming is catching up and one of the first thing I was thinking of was Perma Death. A free idea i'll give.. You can give them a Limbo Stage that'll treat you as unconscious and give you a chance to save your life.. Unless your toon is currently in the belly of a high level monster.. Then I think you'll be out of luck.
Hey, I really like the graphics! What is this *style* called? Breath of the Wild for example is "cell shading". What would Kindred Fates be :D?
I'd say stylized. There's not that many art styles.
Anime style.
All scope creep results in delays and more work
This game looks amazing
I would recommend other people not to start off raising money until the game is near finished because otherwise if it doesn't turn out right you will be labelled a scam
I saw this and got excited and went to go get the game but its selling at almost the same price as a 3xA game which btw is in alpha and I was like, f that lol
Yooo, he balling out like crazy
Not me, not yet at least 😂😂😂
they should try using toon shaders. i wonder how nice it would look on it
BoTW + Pokemon? Not surprised it got funded quickly.
Like Digimon 1 (PS1) but with open-Camera world + 3D full
Advertising your game to look appealing is everything, sometime showing things it doesn't have, or atleast not the same, attracting unsuspecting preys into the trap
Cool interview :)
Thanks Moonlight!!!
Hope you raise 1000000 dollars
So cool! I'm curious what they meant by "spend money on art" did they pay a 3D artist to help them make models?
I believe they spent money on concept art and the visuals for the HUDs,etc, but I am not 100% sure haha. I think the point is to cover the costs of making your game visually stunning and pay people that can cover your weak points!
Yes. They worked on concepts and then found artists/modelers/riggers to help create the assets and the vfx. Costs for the art needed to get them to the Kickstarter phase was about $15,000. Rob and Tori (the third co-founder) also did a lot of the art. Tori did the landscaping/terrain. Rob did the early programming.
Hope you get there
Thanks! I really appreciate everyone's support 💜😭
I understand the problem with the physical awburn plushie xD because with mine there was an issue and I still don't have it but the support is really nice and I'm not mad about the long waiting time :)
hahaha good to hear your input! Keep pushing! :D
Yeah same. It wasn't the main thing I wanted in what I bought (it was the combat alpha) so I honestly don't mind that much. I understand that it can be problematic
Reach out to Tori on the KF discord. Fortunately most plushies got to their new homes just fine, but some didn't. Tori is sending those out as people report problems.
VERY NICEEEEEE
Ty!
What is the game on preview ?
wait was there an engine change in there? was this ultimately made in unity or unreal engine? im new here, interesting stuff
I believe they are using unity to develop the game 😁
After hearing Pokémon legends I feel really bad for these guys because their revenue will take a hit...
I wish I had one mil but they kind of deserve the money for there work
haha yeah 100%, they are grinding!
G, Dark fantasy ARPG - She Will Punish Them (Beta.HD)
Dude the main character kinda got a horror story protagonist vibe to it. And im sure they did that on purpose.
These game is made with unity or unreal?
Unity
@@neevsterthecattailor6938 Thanks bro
hope we will achieve this lol
They beat to it, great. Now I can be a lazy consumer as I wanted to be.
I'm not understand anithing, but the game Is veri beutiful, excuse my inglish
What game is it at 13:30?
Hyper light drifter :]
Just as I was thinking how fun itd be to make a pokemon style open world moster tamer. These mofos beat me to it by months lmao. In all seriousness tho the game looks amazing, cant wait to buy it.
Loool yeah man, I feel you. I'm also currently making an open world monster catcher, so don't let other games let you lose your vision! If your game is unique in its own way then keep going 🙂
Same 😂 haha, i just started 2 weeks ago(all by myself) focusing on monsters taming theme , but i would still continue to develop it and hopefully publish the game.(if i get copyrighted oh well.... rip... that is life)
First! (I’ll edit later)
Nope, did get this one bro
That moment when you dropped $80 in courses that total about $700 on udemy and another $200 on assests that total well over $700.
My advice to aspiring devs, and this is from someone fairly new themselves to indie dev., Pursue it, invest in yourself... If you can't be bothered to invest in your self then why should others? Take your time and learn the most you can. Just go for it, you can't succeed if you don't try.
Good day to everyone and take care.
~Warlock
What's the name of this game 13:29
That's Hyper Light Drifter 💜
thats kinda sicc
Yeah, definitely!
and now pokemon is releasing their open world next year. wtf
looks worse than this, but Pokemon fans are all over it
1 million? Government takes half. The other half can go into dividends and you'll basically have a self sustaining company of 2.
I love you.
😍💜
Cash money moola
🤑🤑🤑
Lots of good insight, but I'd really have to disagree about spending money to make it serious. I feel like that's the easiest part. I know a ton of people, including myself in some cases, who are more than happy to collect all the tools they need because it feels like progress.
It's false progress though. Like writing something on a to do list just to cross it off. You need to actually do the work.
I think it's paying the employees
A game of this scope would take you far too long to do everything yourself. It is better to pay others to do the work. It's what being an actual company is about. Progress is progress, you don't need to do everything yourself. Most of us try to do everything ourselves, because we have nobody to help us or we don't have the money to pay others.
@@maythesciencebewithyou I may have misinterpreted their point, looking back at it.
My point was more about buying tools or assets to give yourself that sense of progress without ever making real progress.
If we're talking about outsourcing so that you can get that tangible progression, even with the help of others, then I would agree.
Finally pokemon fans can have the dignity of not playing a kids game. Thank you.
Offer to make the game pokemon won't be, get funded
0:09 bro is that monopoly money? get a real job!
(JK JK)
LMAO that's Canadian money hahhahaha
@@ReeceGeofroy Ohh my bad, my bad. It's colorful and I'm just a dummy from the U.S. (who just wants to quit my day job and make games too btw)
@@Nova04550 all good bro, good luck with it! I'm sure you can make it happen 🙂
My dream pokemon style game is with realistic graphics. Think a Skyrim dragon but its a Charizard. And all the monsters are mostly towering beasts. That could snap you like a twig if threatened. (Could make for a dark fantasy game). Fine ill do it myself😅😅
This is going to be No Mans Sky all over again.
Did you kidnape developers so you can make this video?
LMAO maybe....
He does
@@ReeceGeofroy Please let us out Reece (T_T)
@@SkymillStudios maybe if you send Monster Tribe half the funds 💀😫

You made it!
this crap looking game made a million wtf
Nice video, have a "like".
Woohoooo! 🤩
