Grizzly Encounter during Hyperphagia

- This is a close encounter with a grizzly bear during the time of Hyperphagia. It was as close as 50 yards when first seen in the tall grass. It can be a bit scary when they continue to move towards you as this grizzly did. I was moving away the entire time as it was moving towards me because it never looked up in my direction to see me. This is outside the Yellowstone Park boundary.
Stan, I would like to introduce myself. I have been subscribed for quite awhile, now. I am Doug Bender from North Carolina. Our family, while living in Florida, took an 11,000 mile trip in 1985 and visited Yellowstone Park. That's a long time ago and we didn't do the hike as you do in your videos. Later, in the early 2000's, I took up wildlife photography as a hobby. Most of my photography is from locations in Florida. I love your gentle way of passing through the trails so as not to disturb the wildlife, since it is their home and not yours. I too, love all the things that the Lord has created. I believe that we are blood brothers. Thanks for sharing these wonderful adventures with all of us on CZcams!

Wow. That's much too scary for me. I had a hard time watching. I sincerely hope for your continued safety! I'm very concerned you will run into a grizzly situation that will not go well. Such like the couple and their dog that were killed recently here in western Canada. They were very experienced back country hikers and unfortunately their lives were cut short by a grizzly bear. One can never be too careful. Please stay safe, Stan. I have enjoyed watching your videos. Thank you for sharing them with us.

I hope folks watching this video do not think this is acceptable behavior in bear country. Quietly hiking off trail, alone, without making noise is not smart! This is how a friend of mine was mauled in Yellowstone in 2011.
Acceptable to who? You can do whatever you want bud, this guys movements in this video mimic what a hunter would be doing… this is totally acceptable movement in the wilderness for a hunter.
Not only is this perfectly acceptable behavior, but highly informative of how to react when a close encounter takes place. Extraordinary experienced with more grizzly bear encounters than any of the so called "experts" civilian and wildlife managers combined. This isn't for the "bear bells" hollering and carrying on in the field with limited to no experience around grizzlies. So without the right credentials, actual one on one experience with grizzlies and their habitant, play it safe, this style isn't for you.
Yes, it is important to remember that this is how I do it in God’s beautiful creation. I walk by faith, not by sight. You should do what feels best for you if hiking in grizzly country.
Incorrect. You have no clue what you’re talking about. Having an encounter with any sort of brown bear is NOTHING like being on a normal hunt. The behavior in this video was extremely irresponsible and dangerous.
@@StanMillsI totally agree Stan, I’m out in nature to be at peace and to be free, not to strictly live by any code of safety just because other people (who don’t spend time everyday in the woods) think I should. The man was well out of harms way, why complain he didn’t follow every one of your rules.

I’m a grizzly at heart. Eating all the time. Thanks for the awesome video, Stan. I’ve been lucky enough to go to many beautiful places across the world. Nothing equates to Yellowstone and Teton region. The scenery and the wildlife are amazing. A great place to feel alive and recharge the batteries.

Yes, it is a great place to feel alive and recharge. But a lot of my hikes I see very little wildlife. In those cases it turns out to be a long drive and at least some good exercise. Thank you for your comments.

@@randallmarsh1187 My husband died in a motorcycle crash and woke up on a beach with Jesus and Jesus sent him back telling him he had more to do..my husband said no no no! and woke up in the hospital and the Dr said it's a miracle he's alive..his rib punctured his heart and blood was pouring out of his helmet. My Husband doesn't like the beach so it's funny that is where he was when he died lol. My Dad died when he was 36 from Lupus .. It sucks but obviously it is meant to be bc he wasn't brought back.

I laid down for a nap and saw him standing on top of a stairway to heaven and he was wearing a long white robe and a three pointed golden crown. He smiled at me and the crown shimmered. I woke up and searched google and the Bible to find anything about what I saw and found Genesis 28:10 Jacobs Dream and that's what I saw too. My Dad also saw Jesus before he died and he told us Jesus said "come to me."

Wonder if you mean the older couple who carried a can of bear spray no other weapons into grizzly bear country and went hiking camping during at bad time do so with the grizzly- they let their guard down nonchalant while hiking in grizzly county. they didn’t have a dog so maybe u speak of some one else also with no weapon to protect them self

Two people killed by grizzly last week, east side of Banff Park.
Being alone in the backcountry is an exhilarating experience, I spend many weeks a year doing just that. Like you, I am addicted to the wilderness. It is not easy to explain. You take your chances out there, and you hope that you don’t encounter the one animal that could do you the most injury in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of warning. This past 29 Sep a couple hiking with their dog Banff back county never made it out after that terrifying night. It did not end well, measely bear spray was not sufficient. The couple was supposedly highly experienced in back country with bear spray as their only defense along with SOS PLB. The write up stressed bear Hyperphasia season. A proper means of self defense is imperative.

Grizzlies are more dangerous during hyperphagia than any other time of year, it’s a fact. And going quietly through the trails will increase your chances of a very unwanted encounter with a grizzly. But according to you it’s the best way. So your saying all of the experts are wrong and you are correct. I hope the advice you give doesn’t lead to someone getting hurt or worse.
You are assuming a lot. First, as I point out a lot, but I didn’t in this video, “this is the way I do it, you should do what is best for you”. I don’t hand out advice, but I know when I am talking it sounds like that sometimes. 2nd, although I have been doing this a large portion of my life, and have a large body of work, and logs, I am not an expert. I don’t sit behind a desk compiling data. I only have experience. My mind is open to seeing and learning every day I am out there. So no, I am certainly not an expert. 3rd, I want to be very respectful to the wildlife in their home. I am not a ME person. It is not about me me me. It is about Gods beautiful creation and the amazing wildlife. So do I disagree with “experts”, I don’t know, I am only saying what I have learned from many years solo hiking in grizzly country. I have never met an “expert” out solo hiking in my life, although I do know a couple very knowledgeable people that have done the same thing as me.

@StanMills I appreciate your nuanced and respectful approach to grizzlies when you do encounter them but perhaps it would be wise to include a bit of additional commentary in the narrative. Not all grizzlies in a habitat are successful at getting calories at the end of a season and it's misleading to infer that the bears in the area won't be struggling for food just because this one is in such great physical condition. Young bears without established territory and bears with declining health are at times, more likely to acquire food in ways that cause bear - human conflict.

Hi Stan, did you hear about the couple that were killed by grizzly in Banff National Park on Saturday? This makes me nervous about going camping. How do you mitigate the risk of a predatorial attack like that? Obviously the chance is very low, but is it worth taking the risk? How to you mitigate the risk? To me the only way to be prepared for such an attack is to be armed.
Remember availability bias is at work - wildlife attacks are like commercial plane crashes. You think about them a lot, they’re spectacular and terrifying to contemplate - but still statistically extremely rare. You’re safer camping than driving.
…but fwiw Stan doesn’t hike without two cans of bear spray and a sat phone…

They also were in the backcountry and experienced at it that type of camping. Also, the berries were in low supply this year.

@@StanMills Well dear Stan, since you put so much faith in "God" , I hate to say this to you, but it doesn't matter how much faith you have, God is not always around. ;) Is he around for little children who know nothing about him and who die of hunger, or who are abused? What about all the wars? and all the innocent people whom are killed, are they dying because they have no faith ? May be they have faith in one religion or another, but may be they die anyway. I was talking to this older German lady today, we were talking about what is going on with Israel and Palestine... I was distraught by all the madness of war and she said..." Why so many religions when there is only one truth..." People kill each other in the name of god...not good. :) Much respect, stay safe.

Yes. I have had that happen to me before. One moment the grizzly acts like it doesn’t know you are around and the next instance it is running my direction.

Hi Stan, I enloy getting a vicarious thrill from watching you tempt fate with grizzlies, but I don't think that this video proves anything about hyperphagia. Statistically, there have been more attacks during that time. For instance, a hiking couple and their dog were just killed in Banff national park in Canada. The attack was predatory because the bear was standing guard over their bodies when the rangers arrived several hours later.
I don't like to make noise when hiking either, few people really do, but I know that I'm taking a risk and am not blessed with the power of detecting bears in the brush. Let's just agree that we are out to get some primitive thrills in this overcivilized world and not claim that what we are doing is all that safe.

It turns out that the attack occurred around 8pm when the couple had gone to bed, as they were wearing their socks and looking at e-readers. The perpetrator was a 25 year old nonlactating grizzly female in poor condition. She was clearly looking for a filling meal before hibernation, which is what hyperphagia is all about. @@davidsuch8942

Youre a braver man than I am. I had a chance to work in a park at an entry station in N. Ontario and would have had to walk a trail of a few kms to get to the boat launch alone that led to camp by boat and thought hell no. Lots of black bears this year especially and I'm not an outdoorsman. Needless to say I passed on the job. Haha love your videos!

I do. I mentioned that in a couple of my videos. I see as many bears behind me as I go in front of me. It is impossible to say how many I have walked by not knowing they are there.

When close encounters happen you are already way to close! At that point you have to do the right thing. For me, the right thing is to do nothing that will alarm and upset the grizzly. You have to do what feels best for you. This is how I do it. Thanks for your comment.

Didn't expect you to be out during Hyperphagia season. There was just a death recently, of very experienced back country campers, from a Grizzly Bear in Banff.

I don't think that bear ever saw you because he never looked right at you I think he smelled you on the ground where you had been and was standing up trying to locate you very close call exclamation point😮
It’s hard to imagine if you are not there. But in his videos he can only explain how his experience was for each encounter.
I enjoy your videos but don't share your opinion on Hyperphagia. I have only had to deal with black bears, not grizzlies, and the two times my cabin was broken into was in the months of October/November. I have had one try to drive me off of a moose I shot, and ended up having to take him down because he meant business. I also had one that backed me into my cabin, and that was in the fall as well.
I don't think it is a coincidence that two people were just killed by a grizzly this week in Alberta, and another lady was just attacked in the States.
I am extra cautious this time of year. Coming across a bear protecting a kill at any time of the year is dangerous, but at this time, it is a death warrant because they are willing to die before they let anything steal their food, because for them right now, getting food is the difference between surviving the winter or not.

The woman was transported by an air ambulance to a hospital in Kalispell in northeast Montana near Glacier National Park, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials. Her condition and identity were not disclosed.
The woman, her husband, and a dog were on the "Bubble Ups" area of Trail Creek in Flathead National Forest when a bear attacked her at about 3 p.m., according to Montana officials. Her husband used bear spray to scare the creature away, and the couple returned to their vehicle and drove to an area where they could call emergency services, according to the release.
The park site is closed as the investigation continues. Wildlife officials did not confirm the type of bear in the attack.
@@StanMills That looked like grizzlies scavenging on a wolf kill. One of the peculiar behaviors of the Yellowstone larger boar grizzlies, is they have adjusted to the reintroduction of wolves by foregoing hibernation in order to follow the local wolf pack all winter and share in their kills. The larger bear and the wolves are probably very familiar to each other and have developed a somewhat tenuous hierarchy at these kills to minimize risk of injury and wasted energy. Neither party however, plans on inviting us dumb humans to the buffet:)

Stan I understand you think you know everything there's to know about Grizzlies but they're wild animals and extremely intelligent and if anytime these bears feel threatened or go into preditorial mode you will be in extreme danger. Bears have mastered the art of hunting and these bears could get within 10ft without you knowing. If you only carry bear spray you're out of your mind and it's just a matter of time before something happens. Please at least carry a glock 20 with 10mm armor piercing rounds. Just saying. I know you've been doing this for years but it only takes 1 second to lose your life. Take care out there

Amazing place. You saw the Grizzly when he was still a good distance away and as you indicated, against the wind. My question is, in the beginning of the video as you are ambling cross-country through the forest, how can you be assured you won’t just randomly stumble on a grizzly when he/she happens to be close? Aren’t you somewhat scared walking around the forest in Yellowstone like that? Or is it a situation where most bears aren’t in that particular forested area so you feel pretty safe there?

Hi Stan, you make wonderful videos, which I so much enjoy as an artist too, and I am sure that there is a special state of mind and soul that you are experiencing while there. However I also consider your way of hiking unreasonably risky, and why not an experienced hiker I can understand the common sense of the "make noise" advice. Your argument for a quiet motion, as it is not about 'YOU', makes no sense to me. The fact that it is safe to make yourself heard while in closed wild space is by no means meat to showcase us humans in the wild stage! These sudden encounters are the most notoriously known for tragic events for both humans and bears (so many were killed after these incidents being perceived as agressive). Hope you do not mind my comment and wish to watch your videos for many years to come 😍.

Saw a vidio of a teenager calling a wild racoon , the racoon was trying to leave , she tryed to follow it it didnt like that and eventaly attacked her .she wanted to pet it .

Stan I’m a student at msu. Being a freshman here I’ve already seen 30+ at a spot that you probably know here in Montana. Won’t say for privacy. I love these videos and love going out to watch wildlife. Recently went in the backcountry of Yellowstone. Saw wolf tracks and bear tracks. Would you consider going on a hike like this with a expirenced subscriber or do you only go alone? Also I know you have seen a dead mountain lion. But have you seen one with your own eyes?
I'm in Idaho and have recently felt compelled to go out to see one with my own eyes but I never will unless its by accident. Teton, island park, and falls area and then Montana.. curious what you're studying?
It’s very nice of you to be recording such great videos & as for this very video, although it was beautiful, but man, you gotta be careful. I think you stayed way too long when the bear was near. One can’t take any chances. But again, I dunno, maybe you’re were carrying a weapon or a spray on ya…but still…Stay safe!
I do carry 2 cans of bear spray. I have never had to use one. But you are right about staying to long. But one thing I have to consider with unexpected close encounters like this is how I am going to move away. Most of the time the bear would be moving left, right or away. But in the cases like this one where the bear is making it’s way towards me, it would have been better to start backing away immediately instead of waiting around to see which direction it was really going to go like I did.
I was so stressed out watching this video. I'm going to work at Yellowstone this summer and hope to see lots of them. but not when I'm alone!
Hey Stan have you ever heard of or tried using a small air horn if a griz gets to close?

Me and my family moved from Kingwood, Texas to Missoula, Montana 2 years ago and I used to be terrified of bears and the more i'm around them, the less scared I am because they really aren't going to attack and eat you the second they see you lol. We saw our first brown/black bear up close and personal when we first moved here..She was really big and stood up and then went up the mountain after my husband raised his voice at her. In Glacier National Park on the Iceberg Lake trail we saw our first young grizzly and it was eating in the bush...We walked by with a big group of people and it slowly walked up the mountain and sniffed the air. We always bring bear spray and a gun just in case ..and hike in groups. I really enjoy seeing bears :)

I do this sometimes. Wildlife stalking, because if you actually want to see wildlife, you need to approach slowly, carefully, & quietly. Most hikers make all sorts of obnoxious noise emptying the forest of wildlife except for the large carnivores habituated to free meals via blue tooth speaker.
I know grizzly bear attacks are rare and 99 times out of 100, they want nothing to do with us. But the bottom line is that during almost any encounter in the wild, whether we live or die is almost entirely up to the bear. Bear spray, high-powered rifles and making all the right moves (backing up, making noise if he or she sees you, not running, etc.) can be effective, but it's important to remember that plenty of people have been killed after having employed all of those resources. When push comes to shove, our survival is at the bear's discretion.

After you see a Grizzly close like in this video, doesn’t it make you very nervous to keep going? I would worry that he moves off, but sees you as an intruder in his specific territory (not food) and he stalks you.
Not sure I call it nervous, but as in this video, I normally turn around and go back. But every encounter is not always the same. Thanks

Not to be a scold, but don't national parks, US forests and state parks generally urge you to stay ON marked trails? Obviously, if this is private land, it's fair game.

I had a very close black bear encounter last week in Banff NP, probably within 20 yards, walked up on here feeding, she turned to look at me then just turned around and continued eating. I wish I could show you the photos.
Would like to see them. You and the bear were obviously in a calm state and you did nothing to upset the bear. But I know you have a lot of experience.

Banksters, FED, they print paper currency to lend for interest profit. That money printed from thin air is borrowed by large construction conglomerate to sell lots. You don't know that+ according to friends they did not let the dog roam off leash. We now know that they had already been in camp for several hours before the bear attacked. Grizzlies who enter camps are almost always predatory+ that bear clearly was since it was still guarding the bodies when rescuers arrived 5 hours later. It is likely that the dog died trying to protect them when the bear came into camp@@twostop6895
