Not only is it viable it’s the best choice. No stove pipes, no double feeds, no ‘limp wrist’ malfunctions, failure to fire problems you can fix with one hand. If you need more than 6 shots you probably have bigger problems.

I think marketing with hype about capacity just works. Plus it gets people talking, like we are now.
I'm fine with a revolver, but I prefer six shots. I'm too used to counting six, I guess.
Never had to use one round in defense mode, but I usually have 2 speed loaders, just in case.
Looks like we're all guilty of falling into the capacity trap.
Carry what YOU like. If you stay out of the bad areas, and don't go looking for trouble, chances are you'll have more than enough capacity.

      Valid point!
One thing I LOVE about my over/unders, or single shot platforms, is you MUST OBEY all the basic rules/laws of Marksmanship (Sight alignment, sight picture, breath and trigger discipline). When you only have that one/few rounds, you have to use them appropriately!

How to say "I don't know what the hell I'm talking about because I'm a Glock boi" without saying it... You do understand the double action snub nose is one of the hardest to master. The average person does not understand how to correctly use the double action trigger, since all they know is just pull the trigger as they had seen on the auto loader. You have to master the trigger pull so it won't destroy your aim. It is not a beginner's weapon, and only jabronis who talk out their ass will say it is a beginners weapon.

I think it is probably a perception driven by experience.
I started out Pre-Glock era with a Medium Frame Steel DA Revolver with a 4" Heavy Barrel. First I learned the basics of grip, stance and sight alignment while cocking the hammer with the support hand thumb. It had a very short crisp trigger pull. Then I progressed to DA and learning trigger control.
I believe trigger control is a fundamental skill that everyone should learn and the DA Revolver is one of the best tools to teach it.
These days I carry a Glock 30S primarily as a belt gun, but on occasion a Colt Detective Special 2nd Issue does find it's way into the jacket pocket.

"Firepower," as I found out as a police officer and US Army 11-Bravo, is hitting what you aim at! "Pray and spray" never works so well as a well-aimed and effective shot under duress. My EDC is a Taurus Tracker .44, in which I carry .44 Special HP loads which are quite sufficient for any two-legged varmints I'm likely to encounter here in Wyoming. Now, if I'm walking the BLM or up in the Winds, then I load it up with .44 mag loads with 240 to 255 gr. hard-cast lead SWC projectiles loaded to around 1400 to 1500 fps. My wife's EDC is a Taurus 605 2" in .357 mag loaded with Buffalo Bore "Heavy 38" 158 grain LHPSWC. It's just about the most powerful .38 Special load one can buy, and there's always the .357 option. I know our revolvers can get the job done, if necessary, and neither one of us feels "undergunned" in these dangerous times. A word of caution: DA revolvers are simple to operate, but not so simple to master. "Trigger time" is absolutely essential, either dry-firing or at the range, in order to master the long DA trigger pull, and if one is not prepared to invest in the time needed to do so, then you should invest in professional training, which is available, at a cost. This is all part of being prepared for that moment we all hope and pray never happens, but for which we need to be ready, in order to protect our loved ones and/or ourselves! God bless all!

    @richardkluesek4301 Před 20 dny +6

Some armed private security companies have recently and possibly still do use revolvers with multiple personnel simultaneously stationed on the protected site. .38 Special Revolvers are legal in all 50 States without concern about magazine capacity restrictions, ammunition sensitivity, and the disadvantage of low cartridge count is overcome by several employees working together. For armed citizens there is no mission to kill, capture, destroy, or apprehend anybody, just to deflect the assailant and be a witness to report the incident to the authorities. For concern about 5 or 6 shots not being enough and being overcome during reloading, encounters of 3 shots in 3 seconds at 3 yards are within the capabilities of the more easily concealable revolver. There can be counter arguments about semi automatic pistols being more difficult to conceal and malfunctioning with stovepopes, misfeeds, ejection failures, and limpwristing issues. Expect no absolute answer, so own as many sidearms as you can to have as many options as possible.

Personally. I love conversations like this. So much. I think revolvers are IDEAL for civilian, and security/ protection agencies. Here's why. Two main reasons.
    1. Civs don't have immunity. So knowing you only have 6 may make you more choosey on what you blow your 6 on. (Lol) which also brings me to my number 2. (Lol!!)
    2. We all know the limitations revolvers have. The trigger pull, low cap, and reload. So guess what someone should focus on when training with revolvers? Those three.
Being able to shoot it accurately, reload it fluently, and handle the trigger acceptably is the goal. The calibers revolvers are chambered in are always better than their semi auto counter parts. For example. You can't compare 38 to 9mm. You compare 38 to 380. 38 wins. Compare 9mm to 357, 357 wins. 10mm to 41 magnum, 41 wins. Ect. Ect.
Military and law enforcement should choose semi automatics because they have to have compatability between parts out of all of them. Military especially shouldn't matter much, troops typically choose a rifle or PCC. Police is the only questionable one. And well...let's not forget. In the 20s and 30s, we had police WITHOUT SPEEDLOADERS, going up against mobsters with full auto Thompsons.

After 28 years as an LEO. I still carry of course. My thinking has changed as a civilian. I carry a revolver as my primary weapon and a backup weapon. 2 is 1 and 1 is none. When in rural areas generally I carry two revolvers. When in urban areas a Revolver and a semi. Why? In rural areas the revolver allows me to stack loads which come in handy on the farm and a NY reload is the fastest reload. My primary in urban areas is a revolver so that when I win the fight It is going to look far better to the court that I did so with a 6 shot revolver. My backup is the semi should things go really bad a NY reload is the fastest reload. The bottom line when you have to face a jury is perception and feelings will influence facts. Three shots fired from a 5/6 revolver that stops the threat will always be perceived better than 8-15 from a semi that accomplishes the same thing. Whether it’s for the criminal trial or the lawsuit later.

A knife is still viable, if you don’t have a gun. I would rather have any gun, and revolvers are reliable, beautiful and one good shot is all you need. Revolvers are a gentleman’s weapon.

The grip. It just feels natural and puts me on target.

They are pretty comfortable for OWB carry. The grips(the part that tends to print more than any other) on a carry revolver are usually smaller than those on semi-autos. These factors lend themselves to program compliance. Which means you're more likely to carry. For the home where concealability and carry on the body ceases to be an issue, a larger defensive tool(such as a shotgun) can fill that role. Though I'd feel pretty comfortable with a large frame .357 Mag within arm's reach as well. Just in case time or circumstance forbids getting to the shotgun.

One word answer to the title question: YES.
A double action revolver is easier to operate than a semiauto, does not need any confusing safeties and it is NOT dependent on the power of the ammunition it eats to make it function reliably.
The best revolver for concealed carry is the 6 shot Colt Agent .38 Special --- better than a 5 shot Smith.
The perfect open carry duty revolver is a 6 shot S&W Model 19 .357 with a 4" barrel. My very first duty gun back in 1981. I do NOT recommend carrying full load .357's. Most people can't handle the recoil, especially if you need a fast followup shot. Stuff your .357 with .38 +P's, and you will do just fine.
That being said, my carry gun is a Glock 30 in .45ACP because it is as easy to operate as a revolver, UNLESS IT JAMS.
The FBI agents in the Miami shootout did not have speedloaders for their Model 13 revolvers. That certainly hurt them.
It was a good old 12 gauge pump shotgun that actually ended THAT fight.
Carry what you want, but PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

As cool as some are, full sized revolvers dont do it for me..but J frame sized wheel guns feel way less akward than pocket pistols to me, even with the BC gap and high bore axis. both can suck to shoot depending on the load and weight, but thats the trade-off for more concealment. Also it doesnt get much sexier than a blued snubby.
imo the reload disadvantage is slightly exaggerated.. its way more complicated, but people saying it "goes out the window under duress" are just judging everyone else by their own shitty standards. History is full of people successfully reloading surpased firearm technology..Ayood method helps

I feel perfectly adequate with my 3 inch snubby and have no desire to carry or own a semi-auto. They're super comfortable to carry, unquestionably reliable, and have all the firepower your going to need.
One thing that often never gets considered, is that revolvers are looked upon very favourably by the police. When I have been pulled over by police, they are very much reassured by my carry option. I'll never shoot anything, but a revolver.

The others fled and were later captured. So what weapon did the resident use? Uzi? Nope. AR? Nope. Shotgun?nope? Semiauto handgun? Then what? A 22 Ruger Single Six.

Semi's are great, no doubt. Doesn't mean I WON'T be carrying/lugging around my Ruger SuperRedHawk (.44 mag.) AND .12 pump shotgun when out in apex predator areas (Bears, Mtn. Lions, WOLVES, and now the damned feral hogs are arriving. yay).
I'm not as much of a fan for EDC in people areas, though I have zero doubt about how effective they can still be when used to stop any human criminal/murderer. It's just that said criminal/murderer is almost definitely wielding a semi, which gives them an uncomfortable advantage.

most criminals will not stick around from the first round of a defender's gun, they're not there for that. even most groups of criminals would scatter when a defender starts shooting. there are those who would, worse if it's a gang who wants to fight it out, when they know the cops won't be there in a short time. A person needs to gauge on what they think they will face!

Are revolvers still a viable self defense option?
A lot of folks use them both for pocket carry and concealed. Can't beat their reliability compared to autos. Capacity won't matter in a real world five second gunfight where no one will get through a mag or cylinder let alone have time to reload. But carry a reload just in case of that less than one percent chance of multiple threats and a longer gunfight. Capacity will matter if living in a gangland high crime area where multiple threats are common. A lot of gun snobs will deny all that and argue with me that their autos are better and revolvers aren't serious for defense. If that was the case revolvers would not still be on the market and folks would not still be buying them. They are not facing reality that they are not in some video game or some fantasy action hero. Nor are they law enforcement or a soldier that needs and shoots all that extra ammo. They are a civilian on the street, not going to war or on some battlefield. They should be responsible gun owners that regard the four rules of gun safety and the fact that they are responsible for every round that leaves their gun with a lawyer attached to every bullet going down range.

Until they can get 44mag power from a Glock 19, revolvers are still viable. Unfortunately i have had to draw 3 times and shoot once. It sucks but its a product of the world we live in.
People believe that revolvers are more reliable but in actuality they are less reliable. That was a marketing thing that S&W started in the 80s. Im a gunsmith and hear this all the time. I end up showing them why it is wrong. You jam the cylinder, dead gun. You obstruct the hammer, dead gun. The revolver has many more parts and is more susceptible to pocket lint and foreign objects. I had a k-frame come in that was jammed. Wouldnt open.(dangerous) the hammer was jammed slightly back. It had so much garbage in the sideplates and part of a $20 bill jammed beside the hammer. So yeah, it matters, you need to be reliably cleaning a revolver. Not so much with an auto.
