Epic made the first game sound more important than it actually is. The first game has to do with the percentage of which you start in, but your rank was determined by how well you did in arena. For instance, I got Gold II because I barely played arena last season and was only Div6, whereas my friend who got Div8 placed Plat2.

Every once in a while I'd hop on and play with random people either when Arena was still around or jus play filled duos, trios (before Epic fucked up and removed it), and squads but now I've been playing with random people everyday. It's quite fun.

But if we died right away then we got a big boost. So I said we should rry diving off the edge of the map as soon as we spawn and it worked and we got multiple free rank ups that way befor ethey eventaully fixed it😂

Its based on all your previous progress on your account. Resulting in the guy dying off spawn with zero kills still getting plat 1 rank. It does make sense.

Fortnite gives more points if you take less damage for some reason so even though that guy got 30 kills that also means they took a crazy amount of damage
For anyone who doesn't know, the first guy who killed him at 1hp was Slacks, a member of the high-earning FN team Dignitas, and pro players like Bugha, Acorn and Khanada play on that team. Slacks is the 90th best pro player in the world and he was unranked when he fought Prem.

The reason you got plat 1 for dying immediately is because it takes into account your rank from the previous season, too. The reason (probably) he got bronze 3 despite 30 kills is because he might not habe played ranked the previous season, and because he did good he got bronze 3 because i think the system keeps you in bronze if you never played ranked the previous season, no matter how well you do.
