I was reading the book at school when we were doing state tests!!! I was done with my test so I read the book and I got to that part and I verbally squeaked and everyone looked at me.
I really felt for his dad tho, imagine waking up from a coma expecting to hug and kiss your son and being happy that you woke up. But instead you wake up only to find out your son is dead
when i realized that mateo died i lost it. and when rufus finds him ???!?? no. i cried during the last like 50 pages because what rufus had to go through was beyond awful. and the whole i love you scene...broke me. plus rufus fulfilling mateo’s last wish to tell his dad about their day ? bye
There was so much foreshadowing in this book! Like every character was somehow connected to each other. Like Mateo and Rufus would have a small interaction with someone and later we would see that character and somehow they made an impact on them. Like my head is scrambled! Like I don’t know what to think and the fact it turned into a romance broke my heart more. I loved the characters so much and became so attached to them and I loved their relationships with each other! 😢
Yes! I really liked the way everyone was connected to each other in some way like even at the end when Rufus got hit by the car it was the guy who was speeding to his ex because she told him about the call even tho she thought it was his stupid prank or whatever. And I literally had a feeling that they liked each other from the start. Like all the assuring words and gestures it was so cute. But yeah I got attached too I’m only after finishing the book like few days ago and I just realised that u commented 8 months ago but here I am watching videos on the book because it broke me 🥲
Re-reading the book was honestly so much better than reading it for the first time because you notice all of the small details of the foreshadowing, beginning with the stove, and then zoe and ahhh
i just realised... near the end they were like 'what happens if we are the reason of our deaths, like we are responsible for each other's death' and they were like wait no. BUT THEY END UP BEING THE REASON WHY EACH OTHER DIED. BECAUSE MATEO WAS MAKING TEA FOR RUFUS AND RUFUS WAS WATCHING THE VIDEO OF MATEO.
Yeah and yet they were the reason each other survived that long. Rufus kept Mateo away from the stove and Mateo always held Rufus back and checked before they crossed the road 😢😢😢
I realized, Rufus was asleep while mateo died, and Lidia was asleep when Christian died, and technically mateos dad was asleep when mateo died, it just shows how everyone died while the people that loved them were asleep
omg the part that messed me up most was when rufus was telling mateo's dad about everything they did on their last day, and when lidia said she wishes that mateo has a good last day before she met him for the last time. also you know how at the beginning when victor calls mateo to tell him that he's gonna die within the next 24 hours he says something along the lines of "your death is not my fault" and at the end it was his car that killed him. this book ruined me :)
But also (on a more obvious note) how it refers back to when Mateo puts his arm out in front of Rufus to stop him from walking onto the road when they first meet and him saying he knows how to do it, been doing it since he was a kid etc etc but this time Mateo wasn't there

I think Rufus was killed by Victor Gallaher. I mean Delilah Grey is at Althea, a diner named after Althea park which is across the street. And after their phonecall we know Victor, her fiancé, learns she's dying and he is speeding to go to Althea. Rufus carelessly crosses the street to go to Althea park and the book ends. He is at the street Victor is speeding through and I think that's why we got Victor and Delilah's story. I think it's implied that's how he dies.
And the fact that the death cast call was the reason for the deaths of all the ppl(that were dying) mentioned. Like for Delilah she assumed that she wasn't going to die and maybe she didn't

Hey I finished the book yesterday and I have no one to talk to so imma just leave a comment! ⚠️SPOILERS⚠️ This book made me cry a lot. I was crying and just couldn’t stop. My eyes are still puffy lol. If anything I thought they were going to die together but they didn’t. I can’t believe that the small deatail of the stove could mean so much. I read around 100 pages before I finished it so it’s crazy that at one point I was smiling and so happy they kissed and are in love and after I was so sad and bawling my eyes out because they died. Something that hit me was when Rufus told Lidia when Mateo died. Her reaction and the way she quickly understood what was going on as soon as she did not hear mateos voice was just so impacting. And when Rufus saw the paramedics take out the body bag and him talking to the body bag about all the things they were going to do together, I just couldn’t handle it. Although I knew they were both gonna die I didn’t expect it to be like this. They deserved more time and their love story was one of a kind. Throughout the book I would mark quotes, surprising things and events, lessons and character development. But I remember not being able to stop reading when all the horrible events were taking place and didn’t mark or annotate anything there. “ I kiss my last friend because the world can’t be against us if it brought us together”
I’m so attached to this book and the characters like I’m just so emotionally attached to them, I love there relationships and how they met I love how there so different but also the same and compliment each others personality’s so much, I loved to see how they started to build trust for each other throughout the book and the very vulnerable and deep moments they shared with each other, I was so happy any time there was a detail that showed Mateo and Rufus liked each other but was too scared to really make a move, I love how they stuck with each other the whole time and they promised to stay with each other the whole day, They cared for each other so much and had each others backs so much, it’s crazy how much they felt for one another in just one day, I love the small details in the book that shows how much they knew and understood each other even tho they had only known each other for one day, even tho they both had a horrible and tragic death I’m so happy they got to know each other and help each other reach there highest potential and break out of there shells, even tho Mateo waited until his end day to actually live, I’m still happy he got to live and break out of his comfort zone even tho it was only for a day, Rufus made him live and love, and not be afraid, Mateo helped Rufus bring more color into his life, with everything he has been through, Mateo needs Rufus and Rufus needa Mateo, it’s so sad that they only got to have each other in there lives for one day, but I’m glad they got to know each other and connect with one another and love one another before they both died, I hope they reunite in the afterlife, I love this book so much and these characters I would never forget, such and emotional book, I would read again but when I’m mentally ready lol, this is so far my favorite book that i have ever read, yes I did shed a lot of tears but the fact that it really made me feel so many emotions, made the book so good, and I will so recommend it.
I related so much to Mateo’s character and the want for a friend to get me out of my comfort zone. I am not a crier towards books but damn I was dead inside after I finished this, the last line of the book destroyed me.When I finish this I cried for a solid 10 minutes then walked down stairs and my mom looked all concerned at me and asked what’s wrong. I forced her to read it and then she walked into my room at 1 in the morning to wake me up and tell me she finished the book while crying her eyes out. This is definitely a contender for best book I’ve ever read.
It’s also implied that Rufus was hit by Vincent’s ( or whatever his name was) car when he was driving to see his fiancé on her death day and was speeding and when Rufus didn’t check the street he was hit by a car

The thing that really broke me is that they didn't die together. I thought that they would die together or in the same time span, and when they started to fall in love I cried because they didn't have a lot of time.
My HC is that the Plutos reached out to Lidia after Rufus's death and the Plutos and Lidia help each other through their grief and become life long friends and grow old as besties
I just finished this book. The friendship and then blossoming relationship between Rufus and Mateo made me so happy and forgot about Death-Cast. When Rufus described the fire and finding Mateo's body killed me. I wanted to root for them so bad got so attached. I cried for 2 hours

I love his there’s so many small details that they bring back into the second book like how Mateo was too afraid to live until he couldn’t and how him and everyone around him fit into each others lives. And they add some more details into rufas’s backstory
I completely fell in love with Mateo because of how much I related to Rufus I felt like I would've done and said everything he did, like we were sharing Mateo's company. Made me genuinely grieve
Lidia is gonna tell Penny so many lovely stories about Mateo. I feel so bad for his Dad but he'll be so insanely proud, like imagine him scrolling through Rufus' instagram and the visiting the Plutos. I also hope Lidia and Aimee became friends and the Plutos always go to Rufus' favourite diner I have t so much
what i found so incredibly interesting about this book was that it really showed that everyone has a story, the worker they met at make a wish was suicidal etc-
also the book makes two references to the play moulin rouge! and in that play the main character starts the play telling the audience how the woman he falls in love with dies at the end. which is kinda like how this book let’s you know from the beginning that they’re going to die

this book is so good. the last line indicates that rufus got ran over. he got ran over by victor who was speeding to althea (where rufus went to), because victor was speeding in hopes to get to deliiah before her time was up. "without an arm to hold me back" is heartbreaking because if mateo was still alive, he wouldve grabbed rufus' arm and stopped him from crossing the street, because Mateo was always cautious about roads. this is the best book that i have read. all the connections are lovely (ex. mateo recognized the guy he gave his shoes to after all these years; and he was ready to cause the death of his love, rufus)

omg the part that messed me up most was when rufus was telling mateo's dad about everything they did on their last day, and when lidia said she wishes that mateo has a good last day before she met him for the last time. also you know how at the beginning when victor calls mateo to tell him that he's gonna die within the next 24 hours he says something along the lines of "your death is not my fault" and at the end it was his car that killed him. this book ruined me :)

I think Rufus was killed by Victor Gallaher. I mean Delilah Grey is at Althea, a diner named after Althea park which is across the street. And after their phonecall we know Victor, her fiancé, learns she's dying and he is speeding to go to Althea. Rufus carelessly crosses the street to go to Althea park and the book ends. He is at the street Victor is speeding through and I think that's why we got Victor and Delilah's story. I think it's implied that's how he dies.

Yeah that's what I thought after reading a book my first thought was if death cast simply didn't exist and they never knew they were gonna die then many of the deaths in the book could have been avoided then again if death cast never existed Mateo and Rufus would have not met each other

Hey I finished the book yesterday and I have no one to talk to so imma just leave a comment!

This book made me cry a lot. I was crying and just couldn’t stop. My eyes are still puffy lol. If anything I thought they were going to die together but they didn’t. I can’t believe that the small deatail of the stove could mean so much. I read around 100 pages before I finished it so it’s crazy that at one point I was smiling and so happy they kissed and are in love and after I was so sad and bawling my eyes out because they died. Something that hit me was when Rufus told Lidia when Mateo died. Her reaction and the way she quickly understood what was going on as soon as she did not hear mateos voice was just so impacting. And when Rufus saw the paramedics take out the body bag and him talking to the body bag about all the things they were going to do together, I just couldn’t handle it. Although I knew they were both gonna die I didn’t expect it to be like this. They deserved more time and their love story was one of a kind.
Throughout the book I would mark quotes, surprising things and events, lessons and character development. But I remember not being able to stop reading when all the horrible events were taking place and didn’t mark or annotate anything there.

I’m so attached to this book and the characters like I’m just so emotionally attached to them, I love there relationships and how they met I love how there so different but also the same and compliment each others personality’s so much, I loved to see how they started to build trust for each other throughout the book and the very vulnerable and deep moments they shared with each other, I was so happy any time there was a detail that showed Mateo and Rufus liked each other but was too scared to really make a move, I love how they stuck with each other the whole time and they promised to stay with each other the whole day, They cared for each other so much and had each others backs so much, it’s crazy how much they felt for one another in just one day, I love the small details in the book that shows how much they knew and understood each other even tho they had only known each other for one day, even tho they both had a horrible and tragic death I’m so happy they got to know each other and help each other reach there highest potential and break out of there shells, even tho Mateo waited until his end day to actually live, I’m still happy he got to live and break out of his comfort zone even tho it was only for a day, Rufus made him live and love, and not be afraid, Mateo helped Rufus bring more color into his life, with everything he has been through, Mateo needs Rufus and Rufus needa Mateo, it’s so sad that they only got to have each other in there lives for one day, but I’m glad they got to know each other and connect with one another and love one another before they both died, I hope they reunite in the afterlife, I love this book so much and these characters I would never forget, such and emotional book, I would read again but when I’m mentally ready lol, this is so far my favorite book that i have ever read, yes I did shed a lot of tears but the fact that it really made me feel so many emotions, made the book so good, and I will so recommend it.

second I HAVE A THEORY that the car who killed rufus was the guy from death cast who called him (victor) cz he was in a rush to meet his fiance ( delilah ) and they were on the same street and the fact that he said that he couldn't do anything about it at the start of the book BROKE ME cz like honey U KILLED HIM

I am not a crier towards books but damn I was dead inside after I finished this, the last line of the book destroyed me.When I finish this I cried for a solid 10 minutes then walked down stairs and my mom looked all concerned at me and asked what’s wrong. I forced her to read it and then she walked into my room at 1 in the morning to wake me up and tell me she finished the book while crying her eyes out. This is definitely a contender for best book I’ve ever read.

I just finished this book. The friendship and then blossoming relationship between Rufus and Mateo made me so happy and forgot about Death-Cast. When Rufus described the fire and finding Mateo's body killed me. I wanted to root for them so bad got so attached. I cried for 2 hours

I love his there’s so many small details that they bring back into the second book like how Mateo was too afraid to live until he couldn’t and how him and everyone around him fit into each others lives. And they add some more details into rufas’s backstory

this book is so good. the last line indicates that rufus got ran over. he got ran over by victor who was speeding to althea (where rufus went to), because victor was speeding in hopes to get to deliiah before her time was up. "without an arm to hold me back" is heartbreaking because if mateo was still alive, he wouldve grabbed rufus' arm and stopped him from crossing the street, because Mateo was always cautious about roads.
this is the best book that i have read. all the connections are lovely (ex. mateo recognized the guy he gave his shoes to after all these years; and he was ready to cause the death of his love, rufus)

When I first was reading along I thought that they would both be shot at the club and die in each other's arms under the stars or something instead it hit in a way that was so realistic and sad. Freak things can happen for no reason, promises are broken, no sure last words or anything :(

I don't really get the ending like I expected for them to die together and the author will narate how they died and shit but the book just ends there it's frustrating!! Does "they both died at the end" means Mateo died bcz of fire and Roof died of longing bc his friend/love is gone?? Before Rufus's chapter Victor's chapter was first to read where he's heading towards Delilah at the park where Rufus is heading as well so I concluded bcz of adrenaline rush he would accidentally hit Rufus and that's how the story would end. 😭

BUTTT it means they would have never met eachother. the root to their deaths was literally the stove. the whole reason they died is because they met eachother and the reason they met eachother is because they were dying. and the reason rufus died is because mateo died. if mateo have gotten the stove fixed i think he would’ve never started a fire. but this also means he would’ve never died so they would’ve never met. therefore, it was mateo idk why HE GOT OUT THE BEDD AND MADEE TEASSSHEHDHDHEHE

i just finished this a few hours ago and i bawled my eyes out. i knew the title was “they both die at the end” but i didnt want to accept it bc they’re actually so perfect for eachother. i knew it was coming but the fact that they were actually soulmates was a twist of the knife for me. and the last sentence was actually so sad because idk but i feel like rufus kinda gave up after mateo died. also when mateo was saying “what if we are the reason for eachothers deaths” which they ended up being made me cry but the way i see it if they never found eachother, they never would have lived so either way they would have died metaphorically or physically ☹️☹️☹️☹️ love this book with all my heart tho ❤️❤️
