Who knew dead heads could generate so much hate towards a man bringing youthfulness and energy to our favorite music. He’s not only carrying on the legacy of jerry, but the dead as a whole.. he is opening a doorway to a new generation of dead heads everywhere. Jerry moved my soul and John makes it dance.
Im sick of all you people comparing and rating who is better. We are fortunate to have this music still around to see live. There is very few real musicians left and Mayer is fitting in just fine. If you want to compare him to anyone, compare him to others who have tried to fill Jerrys shoes and Mayer comes the closest than anyone even Trey.
Fuck Trey. Warren Haynes in my view does better than Trey. But for John Mayer to do this great, it's just awesome. I've seen them three times now and he just keeps getting better. Who would of ever thought that John would fill Jerry's shoe's? And rocks it. But I agree. At least we still have the music..
"Fuck Trey" is a little harsh. Get rid of that animosity. If you weren't a fan of the farewell in Chicago we can discuss it but I don't think trey did anything that deserves that kind of hate bro.
First saw Dead on Halloween 1971. This version of them is like the Dead being a cover for the Dead. JG R.I.P. JM adds a sense of lyricalness (is that a word? should be) & melody to their sound, Bravo to all. Saw them again on Columbus, I’m going back as infinitum (is that a word? should be. Thanks for the greatest music!
to bad that life isn't any good, and far away from the original. It sounds like a bad cover...and it really is a cover. But these gus are my Dads age. a,d he barely remembers his own name, some times..so they do ok for their age, just not my thing, and like comparing dank to generic tobacco, in a can.
John Mayer wants to play the blues, even though much of his recordings have been pop melody hits. His left arm tattoo is of Stevie Ray Vaughn. He wrote out every note of every Steve Ray song while at Berkeley School of Music in Boston. Check out some of his Hendrix covers on CZcams - just awesome! A very talented guitarist and songwriter. Once you've seen him live, chances are you'll become a fan too. I like him a lot more listening to him play music versus hearing him speak - some of the stuff he utters is pretty disturbing. It's the music that attracts us, not who the person really is, right?
John wants to rock, and they simply can't do it, and keep up..you can see the frustration in John, AND Bobs face at times....John could rip it up, if not four carrying the rest of the band with him..sad
John was a Stevie Ray clone when first on the scene. There was a bunch of them in the early nineties ala Kenny Wayne Shephard. He was smart enough to go a tasteful pop music route instead of the same old boring blues scene at the time. He does not have however nor does anyone have the charisma in his playing that the Melodic Pied Piper called Jerry Garcia had.
After watching the Fare Thee Well shows with Trey I pretty much avoided Dead and Co. since after 8 1/2 years of Dead shows I was sure nothing was going to bring back that old Jerry feeling, but I have to say I might have been mistaken. I've picked up my ticket for Phoenix this summer, looking forward to the show, Mayer seems to really rock on that guitar in a way that Trey just didn't seem to groove with the guys. I'm looking forward to it!
One of my favourites from their first album, saw them doing it August 5 and 6, the O'Keefe Centre, Toronto. Peter Rowan's version is bluegrass dynamite
This Dead classic actually suits his voice much more than a lot of the tunes he sings. Mayer is really a talented musician, but my one gripe is that his singing style doesn't mesh with Dead tunes, but that's not the case with this tune. Really great version.
+m hartley check out comtinuum and his trio album "try". or any live recordings of the trio for example "live at the joint december 31, 2009"" and "live house of blues september 14, 2005". if you are a fan of greatness you wont be disapointed
Was not a John M. Fan. Remember when I heard her was gonna be in Dead & Co. Didn't agree with it, but he I'd actually the best replacement for Jerry ! 20 plus years later.
I’m slightly reluctant he chose to take a slower and bluesier approach, I don’t think it’d have been possible to match Jerry’s energy on this track. Awesome performance, wish I could see Jerry and Pigpen live though.
I loved the dead...and I'm not a huge fan...didn't go to every show...and as much as I liked them...one problem i had was that Jerry Garcia wasn't a great singer....if you loved the dead...you forgave him that...just like bob dylan or lou reed...it isn't how perfect you sing that counts...it's feeling...and Jerry had that...so don't get me wrong...I don't think that the old dead should have had Jerry singing better...having said that....John Mayer sings this song...HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALWAYS SUNG...but Jerry couldn't do it justice...love him...but it's the truth...John mayer does this better than ANYBODY...EVER!!!!
Dude, Jerry was an excellent singer! His voice had a tenderness that really complemented some of the Dead's songs. I understand not caring for his style, but Jerry was a talented vocalist.
Sounds great, but like others have mentioned, the tempo is way too slow... I've enjoyed seeing Dead & Company live as Bobby is still grooving & showing why he's one of the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time...The Rhythm Devils sound good, but need a lil' more get up and go; Oteil's a great bassist but I can never hear him in the mix...Do appreciate his vocals though & would rather him sing more of Jerry's vocals...Chiementi is solid as is Mayer. However, JM tends to be too bluesy, slows things down & you just can't dance to the blues...All that said, he still wows me with his guitar work & I appreciate his contribution & dedication to the family...I'm happy that "the music never stops" & that Bobby, Bill & Mickey are still going... sad that Phil won't rejoin as it would be amazing to see 4/6 of the GD perform together. IMHO, JRAD is crushing it and providing that 70's GD sound and energy that I and many others crave...and can dance to... Listen to JRAD's 2018 Sweetwater 420 set in ATL and you'll just "smile, smile, smile" (~;-}
This is not the Grateful Dead nor anything like the interplay between Jerry, Phil and Bob. Love John but this is just the Cheese Incident or any other cover band you may see in a bar. Just to let you kids know. No hate just truth.
They played this song basically from 66 til the end, and it got progressively slower. Early on the tempo was super quick, and they didn't slow it significantly until around 1970. Then it proceeded to get slower until the 80's/90's, those versions are about this tempo, maybe a bit slower
Mayer needs to understand the songs of which he sings. There is nothing funny or fun about being throw out in the cold rain and snow. He is singing a traditional song like it was a pop tune. But than again his roots are pop so what should I have expected.
while this is a decent rendition, it just goes to show how far above mere mortals Jerry Garcia was - sorry Mayer, you're not in the same galaxy as Jerry. you are missing the thing that makes a musician great, the ability to create your own ambiance.
+Mc Huelis your reply makes little sense.....I personally don't know him...as I am sure is the case with you?, so how could I like - or dislike him? I state something based on having seen Jerry Garcia perform this song numerous times and being blown away (even when he was higher than a kite), yet being quite underwhelmed hearing this. sorry that not all of the world thinks like you......
robert jones I don't think anyone else today could be doing as great of a job as Johnny is. That being said, I totally agree that jer bear was in a different galaxy lol. I mean come on, it's Jerry :)
Before anyone says anything, I was apprehensive at first... but I gave it due diligence and was left in awe.
John Mayer turned me onto the dead. Now I'm a huge fan.
Chris Barnes YES! That is what I hoped for!! We need new generation to keep this music alive. Welcome to the family 💀🌹❤️⚡️💙
Chris Barnes worked in reverse for me
J H the dead turned you onto John Mayer or JM turned you off from the dead? If it’s the latter you weren’t a fan to begin with
Same here Chris.
John has the perfect voice for this song, so does his guitar
Im sick of all you people comparing and rating who is better. We are fortunate to have this music still around to see live. There is very few real musicians left and Mayer is fitting in just fine. Can't stop listening to this version. Man they are rocking cold rain and snow.. fucking love it!!!!! 😁😁😁😁😁

Talking about breathing new life into a classic song...Fantasic rendition. John rips roars the riffs and the solos on this one.
to bad that life isn't any good, and far away from the original. It sounds like a bad cover...and it really is a cover. But these gus are my Dads age. a,d he barely remembers his own name, some times..so they do ok for their age, just not my thing, and like comparing dank to generic tobacco, in a can.
Tempo is slow & it's hard to watch: check out a real version like Buffalo '86.
China Rider , you should be critiquing this rendition because......?
666777jfk just watched that one it was incredible. jerry in red :)
Man hes pulling some great tones out of the PRS... ranging from real Strat tones through to the Gibson 335 edge. Awesome.
Some songs are a great fit for John's style , this is one of those songs
John Mayer is rocking his new signature PRS!
+BJ Goldberg When I saw that PRS are producing a signature model you a can buy I was buzzing! Then I saw the cost of it
Next year he will have a gibson or charvel signature ....
wish I could get to America to see you all in concert xxx
summer tour, do it, Shoreline/ Boulder your best shows
Surprisingly impressive cover of one of my favorite Grateful Dead tunes!
13 more days until Folsom Field shows... Can't wait... and then it BOOGIE TIME!!!
keeps getting better and better loving it!
I love it. Love it so much I would marry it.
Mayer rulesssssssss

David Jack u right homie
John wants to rock, and they simply can't do it, and keep up..you can see the frustration in John, AND Bobs face at times....John could rip it up, if not four carrying the rest of the band with him..sad
Love the song, not the person behind it
Mayer is a rock that they added him
John was a Stevie Ray clone when first on the scene. There was a bunch of them in the early nineties ala Kenny Wayne Shephard. He was smart enough to go a tasteful pop music route instead of the same old boring blues scene at the time. Coolest song !

Great vibe !
wow this version kicks ass
That girl dancing is getting down!!
We used to call them "twirlers" always present at the dead shows.
The music never stops. I'm in Ohio want to see a show so bad we have a spical needs child and there's just no money for the tickets
One of my favourites from their first album, saw them doing it August 5 and 6, the O'Keefe Centre, Toronto. Peter Rowan's version is bluegrass dynamite
Going to Alpine for summer tour. Hope they're as hot as they were in Minneapolis last winter - they were on time.
The music never stopped...
I'm thinking about going there on the 10th to see them
john kills it here
extase music :)
Looooove!
The girl dancing at 4:08 was the highlight of the video!
I am responsible for at least 400 of these views. Sick jam, at least I think so.
John Mayer filling in was a brilliant decision, he ain’t no Jerry but he jams well with em.
Oteil and Jeff just rippin it
This Dead classic actually suits his voice much more than a lot of the tunes he sings. Mayer is really a talented musician, but my one gripe is that his singing style doesn't mesh with Dead tunes, but that's not the case with this tune. Really great version.
This is one of the better versions I've heard, and that includes Jerry
I was just about to say that. I saw them do this song last night and it was better than any version I've heard with Jerry. No disrespect to Jerry
I agree. This and Eyes of the World were my favorite two they played last night
lol. mediocrity has ruled.
Oh I'm sorry. Were you there to see them live? Besides, these are our opinions. Quit killing the vibe, man.
seriously troll ..fuck off!
Staight 🔥
Yes yes ohhhh cold rain and snoooowwww.Rick A Dead head
Is there anywhere you can buy the live recordings with John?
iTunes has them
Whats Mayer trying to look like Hornsby 1992..... One would think during sound check they would have fattened his tone up if he was playing lead.
you obviously know fuck all about guitar if you think this tone aint fat
This song was turned upside down, but not in a bad way. Listen to the Del McCoury bands version of it, might turn you on to bluegrass.
Real tasty. I'd give it a thumbs up but I'm afraid youtube will start suggesting John Mayer solo stuff. No thanks.
+m hartley check out comtinuum and his trio album "try". or any live recordings of the trio for example "live at the joint december 31, 2009"" and "live house of blues september 14, 2005". if you are a fan of greatness you wont be disapointed
I like Born and Raised for it's country/americana feel. He's certainly qualified to play Grateful Dead music.
cold rain and snow outside. shit weather!
The dead..
that would be Berklee
Was not a John M. Fan. Remember when I heard her was gonna be in Dead & Co. Didn't agree with it, but he I'd actually the best replacement for Jerry ! 20 plus years later.
Is that old geezer Bob Weir?
David P yes let bobby be!!! Lol
:-)
all i know a john has been eatin so much cid lately hes gettin spun
John Mayer is a master musician. His talent surpass what other guitarist attempt to do, he challenges himself.
Loretta Salas yeah but he needs more lsd before he masters his trade
I’m slightly reluctant he chose to take a slower and bluesier approach, I don’t think it’d have been possible to match Jerry’s energy on this track. Awesome performance, wish I could see Jerry and Pigpen live though.

Bob has the shitty voice
Definitely not featuring John Mayer 🤣 John Mayer IS Dead And Company
Sounds great, but like others have mentioned, the tempo is way too slow... Not sure why, but the drums sound completely out of wack on this performance
Mayer is Dead to me
I give Mayer credit but he sure as shit ain't jerry
sounds like a bad acid trip to me...way to slow for one...>gone are the days
they always played this song slow..
They played this song basically from 66 til the end, and it got progressively slower. Early on the tempo was super quick, and they didn't slow it significantly until around 1970. Then it proceeded to get slower until the 80's/90's, those versions are about this tempo, maybe a bit slower

sorry that not all of the world thinks like you......
+Larry Vanhaze
you're a smart one, aren't you...
own ambiance? go watch Live in LA Where the Light is concert.
robert jones I don't think anyone else today could be doing as great of a job as Johnny is. That being said, I totally agree that jer bear was in a different galaxy lol. I mean come on, it's Jerry :)
mayer has more hits and sold more albums ,sorry Garcia is a dead drug addict
John Mayers solo is the shit in this but his vocals don't go with the tone of the band which sucks, exceeept for when they all join in together
A bit slow and lackin the groove, but most of all lacking an iconic solo...
this is so mediocre. it's like a motel painting artist redoing a van gogh.
fuck off troll
Well said, this is horrifying
