  • Released in 1989 by MicroStyle, Stunt Car Racer is a unique racer on the Commodore Amiga. You race one on one as part of league racing across 8 tracks, all of which are challenging, elevated tracks with lots of jumps and banked corners to make things as tricky as possible for you. There is a skill to this game and it's all about getting a feel for the physics of the car and the way it can bounce around at speed.
This was also one of the few games that utilised a serial cable to link not just two Amiga's together, but also an Amiga to an Atari ST, unthinkable at the time! Because both machines used the 68000 processor, transferring the code and getting the games to talk to each other ended up not being as huge a task as could be perceived.
Stunt Car Racer is another excellent sim racing style game by Geoff Crammond, also particularly revered on the Amiga for his Formula One Grand Prix (F1GP) game.
This game is demonstrated using the Minimig core on a Mister FPGA device, which is 100% recommended for retro gaming enthusiasts who do not want to compromise on system accuracy, benefiting from 'hardware' recreation of the system, far better controller lag times as well as the ability to seamlessly switch between systems in seconds.

Linked up once with a mate, house full of Amigas and tv's n stuff. Almost halved an already dodgy framerate but great night.

One big tip: you can boost your braking, just use the boost button under braking to slow down very fast!

This was an absolutely brilliant game, so much better than the abomination of the port "Hard Drivin'." I couldn't agree more that this an absolute must-play for any Amiga fan! It's mind boggling that a game with such low frame rate could feel so great to play.
The other extremely good 3D polygon racing game that comes to mind is No Second Prize, which is another Amiga must-play for racing / driving fans.

Spot on, it just hits that sweet spot of what a playable frame rate is. It's the genius work of Geoff Crammond which made the difference.
No Second Prize is another great game, super smooth too. I really struggled with the mouse controls though.

@@HowtoRetro Come to think of it, perhaps my memories of its control sensitivity have sweetened through the lens of nostalgia, haha.
Anyway, very nice video. Good to see you keeping these memories alive.
