  • A Retro, Retro game I guess this is then?! I mean, this PS1 release is25 years old now, so it has to be retro to somebody along the line somewhere! Anyhow, Bubble Bobble featuring Rainbow Islands is a funny old release for the PlayStation. It's neither faithful recreations of the arcade originals (although they're not far off to be fair), and they are not remakes, or even reboots. These versions sit somewhere between these two descriptions, they are essentially an excuse to release a couple of classic games which have undergone a small lick of paint! Let's see how they fare up then!

Rainbow Islands was a brutal game. I view it favourably but from a distance, like another man may look at a crocodile in a river he could fish in.

This version, and the Saturn version are both awful, the bubble physics in Bubble Bobble are broken in both versions (and the PC version also released back then, Empire Interactive would release their own version years later, and is awesome), and Rainbow Islands is missing the hidden final 3 islands for the games best ending. I hear it is based off of the Amiga version, which is also missing the 3 hidden islands.
