When it came out of the box I thought if I had this beautiful piece of maple or can even order one close to this beautiful I would do liquid glass or epoxy to show that beautiful wood grain. Or you can use a urethane clear that when you wet sand and buff it doesn't have any orange peel and it's one solid beautiful glass plain. I will have to get with you and show you some of the wood working me and my brother can do, I literally did not have a clue I could buy a kit that is that quality of maple top, I have to go in the woods and find my own logs and Burls on trees and stumps to get that I sure do think if that was finished in solid glass to presserve that grain and make it stand out you would be allot more happy.

I think a buffing wheel would make a difference on the finish.... But honestly, it's much nicer than any kit guitar my friends have put together. It looks good and sounds great. I have had to buff, fret level, setup, rewire, and only god knows what else to kit guitars. Most people don't put that much care into their work.
I have spent the last 3 years learning to be a luthier. It takes more than most people realize.... But I have fun with it, and I'm always learning something new.

Quite a while ago you gave me some advice regarding the creating of a guitar. I made mention that I knew just enough about guitar repair to be dangerous or something to that effect. I used to help my father when I was a young kid. I finally decided to take the plunge and bought a guitar kit. You had mentioned it would be a good way to get started in learning the craft. I will let you know how it turns out once I get it and complete the build but wanted to thank you for making the suggestion in order to get me jump started.

I really like your color choices for the finish! The guitar looks and sounds amazing! If you're trying to save money by buying a kit guitar, I would say go buy one already built. You can get em cheaper. If you want to learn about how a guitar is built and how to work on them...I think they're an awesome idea! I've done 2 from Solo...Tele and Strat. They've become my favorite guitars! When you do it yourself, there's more of a connection you have to the instrument that you don't always get when you buy one already finished. You can personalize them and make them exactly how you want them. You can do mods and upgrades as you get the funds to do them. It's just a great overall experience! It's actually changed my life! I'm disabled and with little I can do...a very boring existance. Building the kits gave me a great hobby to occupy my time and gave me something to look forward to! I can't wait to do my next one!👍😎🎸🎶

Graham Linux yeah I found that out the hard way after building a LP and having no end of problems with the finish reacting and bubbling up, dyes not working as expected. In the end a near new strat copy I bought for $50 delivered sounds much better and has great sound unplugged even. I would not bother with building another and would only buy complete again.

  • @alanhuckabee
    @alanhuckabee Před 6 lety

I ordered one of these kits from solo shortly after seeing Brad do his own. I was skeptical of how well the fit and playability of the guitar would be, but it was a gift for a friend who is just learning guitar so I knew it would be fine. I did a simple oil finish and it turned out beautifully. What I wasn’t expecting was how well it truly plays. I put it together without electronics and just the stock hardware at first. Few people talk about this as more than an afterthought, but you HAVE to give the wood time to move and settle. Put strings on it and let it adjust. Play it periodically. Wait a few weeks at least THEN give it the setup. At first, it played ok. When I came back and re-leveled a couple frets that had raised a bit under pressure, it fixed a couple buzzes that had developed and I dropped the action low with no issues. After that I took the starter strings they sent with the kit off, and had a little bit of fun. Swapped the bridge for a graphtech tom, installed the Zakk Wylde pickup set from emg, replaced the plastic nut with bone, and did hipshot open gear locking tuners. After giving it the final setup, WOW. This thing not only plays great, but it looks and sounds amazing! Never tried the stock pickups, because my friend only plays emg’s. Now I think I’m going to order one for myself and play around with the colors as you have. I’m thinking red top, black all around and replacing the white binding on the neck with black. Now that I know the quality of their kits I feel comfortable dropping the $200 on the kit plus the extra $4-500 on the upgraded hardware and pickups.

Thanks for a great build and fun videos. This is exactly the guitar I've been wanting to build also. Solo Music Gear is in my neighborhood in the Toronto area and are a bunch of great guys. They are actually more than just a kit store and also have a showroom full of guitar related accessories for sale. I can drive over to them and hand pick my kit from their store....Not sure what I'd do about finishing my own build as that's not my world but building and upgrading these guitars certainly is, as I regularly buy up old Epiphone Les Paul's and give them a make-over. Thanks again. This was a ton of fun watching and a bit inspirational too...

Darrell is a Tele guy to the core. Binding, what's that? ;-) The binding scraping would've added quite a few more hours to this gig for Brad tbh but I bet Darrell wanted more of a studio or jr look. I'd be concerned about the finish flaking off on the binding as the guitar ages but since it's completely coated in plastic, and not nitro, probably won't be an issue.

Nice video series Darrell! People need to know they have options. When they go down to a big box music store and buy something inexpensive out of Asia, most of the time, they don't understand how the whole distribution system works, and how that effects the price. At the very least, each time a guitar changes hands down the distribution chain, at an absolute minimum, the price doubles. So by the time they spend their $300 on an Asian LP clone, what they really did, was pay $300 for a $50 guitar. And when I say $50, I really mean $50. That's the average cost from the manufacturer, for low quantities of guitars, from Asia, for a decent quality guitar. By low Quantity, between 10-50 units. Of course when the big box stores buy up 1000's to cover the country and different named online presence, the prices go down. As a custom one off builder, my stuff is 10 times this price, but I'm starting to get old and slower, and recently looked into having a consumer grade built in Asia. As an option for builders, instead of dealing with a long supply chain, we could always take the Chapman route, where you have a better quality guitar made, paying additional costs per unit, but then bypassing the normal supply chain and having the custom order direct. This way instead of a $50 guitar, the customer can have a much better made $200 (from the manufacturer) guitar, and really get a higher quality product. But every time someone touches those units, expect the price to double. So that $50 guitar, is from the producer, only palletized and sitting on the dock. Then you have taxes and customs fees per unit to get it out of the country of origin, plus transportation costs, plus import and customs fees, and here in Europe, there are additional taxes such as V.A.T. (Value Added Tax currently here it's 19%) and on and on it goes. Then the label has to make a profit still, which I promise you isn't as much as you might think... Which is why a $50 guitar will cost the ultimate consumer $300 or more.
But as the ultimate consumer, the other option is just like you pointed out in this video series, a kit guitar. Now I really don't recommend this route for a 1st guitar. Get something from a store or 2nd hand, of a decent quality and have it professionally set up, to learn on. But unless you want to continue paying for set up fees etc, a kit is a really good way to learn and make mistakes, such as not scraping the body binding before adding the clear top coat... without destroying an expensive instrument. Learn how to do mods like tuner changes, and pickup changes, etc. Learn how to apply finishes of various kinds. Start with a rattle can, and go up from there. Most of these items you'll need can be bought at your local big box hardware or auto parts supplier for very little money. Watch builders on CZcams and learn how to do this stuff. I would make my own how-to videos on the subject, except I really hate doing the editing part. Honestly, God what a pita!!! I spend my days in my little factory in the next village over, building. Then at night in the little shop in my home, doing repairs and mods for a few music schools I support, so taking the extra time to edit videos, it's just not worth it to me, for a non-monetized channel. The other reason of course, is my political views that I am rather outspoken on, and most of my customers live and work in über liberal Los Angeles, where my outspoken views could cost me customers. So I keep my online presences completely separate. After all, one thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other. But back to the point of this rant, building a kit is an awesome way to learn how to maintain your own equipment, without risking screwing up an expensive instrument. I can't tell you how often I run into that. Especially when it comes to painting or fret work. Occasionally some soldering mistakes, but those are usually easy enough to sort out. There is a way it works, and many ways it doesn't. So someone with experience, can usually simply look in and see if something is jacked up wrong, and sort it out pretty quickly. Even on something like a LP where you have multiple cavities with wires running back and forth through the body. Anyway, off my soapbox... Thanks for the vids Darrell, it's a nice way to start my day! Coffee and guitars with Darrell Braun! Now off to work.... Bob in Germany

I bought 5 of those glued/set in LP standard kits..for only $89 (shipped to my front door a couple years ago. The ones less the pre drilled tail piece holes...
So I can drill my own to get the proper distant to a Gibson...The body looks
like Epiphone or actaully cameout of the same factory....
I shave the back of the neck and tenon to fit my hand..Miin plays better than a gibsons. It dosnt have tuning issues like gibson;s either...due to rhe head stock
tilt and tunner location.,,i just replace the tuner, knobs, pick guard...mostly just for looks...There's no logos on mine...it looks clean...
I have a couple with triple pick ups....Black and a 50's lemon busrt looking..
they look sick...and plays great....I set them up..Low action...clean fret ends..ect,,....If I charge per/hour for time it took to build those guitars..
I'll have to charge a couple of grand...but they're not for sale..
I made them to be played....by me...I couldnt care less if other people cant play
them.lmao.....but most people that played my guitars..WANT THEM...
welll.....durrrrrr. they're SET UP and intonated properly..
It's basically piontless for me to purcahse any finished fatory guitars...no matter
the brand....Im going to shave the neck to fit MY HAND..They need to be custom made to fit my hand.
I also build my own explorers, Flying V...well becuase the chibson looks wierd.
And gibson's cutaway are wacked..even on an exployer ( it hits your hand)
That's why I build my own guitars....I work out the bugs from cookie cutter guitars....
Half of my exploers and Flying have Binding on the neck ALL SET IN NECKs...like the top of the line Gibson,...It;s actaully more expensive for me to purchase parts saperately than a kit...
Tone is also Optional..beucase you can wire the pickups different

As much as I'd hate to say this - that finish is mighty dull and gloppy looking! It's been sanded with too light a grit to cut the paint down to a smooth surface. Also; You need to go back over the headstock edges and sand away the paint that oozed under the edges of the tape. Then reapply the tung oil (also known as China oil, or China wood bore oil) to make it a complete finish again. Take more time! I did a perfect sunburst in my backyard with a spray gun and two spray paint cans of lacquer. I wet-sanded it smooth with 600 grit then 1500 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper until smooth then I rubbed it out by hand with Meguiars' No. 7 brand polish (show car glaze) to make it shine like glass.

Hi Darrell - great job on the kit guitar but I am in agreement with a lot of the comments on here that the maple spalt finish should have been left along and not painted over - I have seen and worked on so many burst LPs that I welcome a unique finish on them. Now I wonder what upgrades you are planning on for another kit guitar you would build if it happens for you? I dig all the work that you do with electrics but I would like to see you step out of your comfort zone and maybe post some reviews with some acoustic guitars. Now that's an area that is unique with its own set of rules but open to many creative mods as well. Have an awesome day & weekend - Keep On Rockin!!!

Awesome sound on this Solo Music kit. I built a Jackson V kit from Albatross guitars and was pretty good for my first try watching a bunch of Brad's videos this summer. I may want to build one from Solo since it sounds like the pickups are better quality. I had to upgrade the bridge pickup to EMG-81s and tends to be the the guitar I play more than my $1300 Schecter Banshee Elite FRS I bought last year.

I don't like the looks / finish I suspect as much as others do (which is why I think I had not subbed to Brad, my personal likes seem to differ from his), however you cannot argue too much against the way better than expected tone, doubly so at this price. Excellent project Darrell. Cool looking and sounds surprisingly good, and does sound like a Les Paul, looking forward to a longer demo of the sounds. Aesthetically, looks great, only flaws to me are the real bright white binding and nut, be great if that were a little darker, same for the back of the neck and headstock. Tung oil is my favorite finish, but I would have used a dark tung oil finish here, I refinished my mahogany SG with the darker shade and it looks really great darker then the neck here. Otherwise, great looking with the dark hardware. But a couple of things: One that selector switch really needs to be replaced, looks really flimsy, and two, what was up with the one volume knob turning on its own after it looks like you only touched it? That was weird.

Every time the back was shown you can see streaks in the finish. After every coat or 2 you should run some 1500 over it at least. Im not knocking Brad though. Ive built 2 guitars using his vids as reference. Even referenced his vids when painting an auto fender. I think he could have done better. But it's still a beautiful guitar. Have you tried a guitar fetish build? Ive got a GFX neck and body from them ive been working on for about 3 years now. guitar is complete...just no electronics yet. And NOTHING on the body or neck was pre drilled. But i made sure i put the bridge in the right spot. Used a Willkenson tremlo instead of a standard strat bridge. But their GFX line is quality.
