    The Peltonen looks the absolute winner to me. Thanks for comparison.
    Ps. Me personally never trust my life and leisure on a K-Bar tho it is beautiful.

      Great take mate.
      I own both the knives you are talking about.
      The Peltonen M95 is a legendary knife.
      Its a superb tool designed for the Finnish military that also has a very unique rubber-wheel retention system for the sheath (in leather or plastic)
      The Finnish Army have used it for decades so basically it MUST be tough and reliable.
      It would be "nice" if it was full tang, with an exposed metal pommel, but the Finnish Army operate at temperatures down to temperatures well below -30c, so exposed metal means hospital.
      Its also a nice halfway house between a combat style knife and a bushcraft knife.
      Totally agree with you about the KABAR btw
      I absolutely love mine, but there is always this tiny part of my brain worrying Im going to bend it.
      I have seen some mechanical tests done of the KABAR and its basically strong enough to support your weight.... but Im just not comfortable with a rat tang where you can theoretically apply enough leverage to bend it: the knife should be mechanically stronger than the human using it!

      @@DaryooshF.Sh.P-vq6mu Incredibly kind of you to say mate, and likewise, I thought your comment was very well-measured and fair.
      For what its worth, I actually keep my KABAR USMC (the one with the plastic handle) in my tool kit. Its a tough knife.
      I dont batton with it but I have practised opening food cans with it, and whilst it scraped off a bit of the coating, its still going strong.
      All the best to you mate. Stay safe in this strange world!

      Agree. I think that fear comes from the videos where people are destroying theirs. On the other hand if you put millions of knives on the market, one or two will be broken. There are videos of destroyed SRKs out there as well.
      I personally batoned frozed wood, seasoned cherry with tons of knots in it and plenty others with mine, it´s still going strong.
      The Ka-bar Mk.2 was always made to be massed produced, so it´s easy to find stronger, slicier and higher quality knives, but almost every military knife made after ww2 was made based on this.

    Some of these Moras have weird lines, there is just something wrong with the transition between handle and blade in terms of aestethics. The Peltonen for example has much more natural curves and is consitent in it’s visual message. Its not my favourite style but it’s it’s own thing and it’s consistent throughout. Same with the kabar.

    Happy with mine. The sheath is awful, replaced mine with a leather one. A full tang would be nice, but it seems sturdy enough. Happy with handle shape, don't want more finger guard than it has. Would actually preferred the simple handle of the classic Mora. Wanted something with slightly larger blade than the largest classic Mora and the Pathfinder works well enough.

    • @TheWtfnonamez
      @TheWtfnonamez Před 5 měsíci

      I have to agree with you on the sheath.
      For some reason every time I put it away its like its "trying to go in the wrong hole" if you catch my drift?
      One day I will get around to making a kydex sheath for it because the stock one is kinda awful really.
      Great concept in theory, but its like the knife is always trying to slip between the plastic liner and the webbing outer.

  • @TheWtfnonamez
    @TheWtfnonamez Před 5 měsíci +1

    I love my Mora Pathfinder but its a solution to a non-existent problem.
    Its basically a very expensive Mora, thats the size of a Peltonen, with the mechanical strength of a good quality chefs knife, sporting a rat tail tang, and a scandi grind.
    It is a VERY odd design philosophy that doesnt seem to address any problem other than "I want a bigger Mora and I want to pay 5x the price for it".
    The best way I can put it is this:
    If I was going on a bushcraft camp where I was NEVER going to batton wood, or chop branches, but I needed to whittle twenty tent pegs and three walking sticks, this would be my knife of choice.
    Since I will never be going on a camp like that.....its basically just a really expensive, long, heavy duty Mora.
    All this being said ... I have zero regrets because there is just something intrinsically beautiful about it.
    Maybe its a great knife for deer hunters? Because it is incredibly dextrous for such a long blade.
    Great analysis btw

      Thanks for your input. In Scandinavia they have used Leukus for a long time now. It´s probably meant more for clearing soft vegetation than hardwood. That being said carbon steels are tough and don´t break as easy. If this is the perfect Mora is debatable. I don´t think it is, but i liked the design enough to try it. Have since sold it though.

      @@megaronknives3032 That is actually an interesting spin, I never really thought about it being Mora making a "Leuku". I actually own a traditional Leuku but never appreciated the comparison. I can see that point now you mention it. I guess its a bit like how the Becker BK2 is really just a vastly improved spin on the British Army Survival Knife.
      This all being said, I actually still have my Pathfinder. Whilst I dont understand what role it really fills, I just love the feeling of it in my hand so much. Maybe I'll take it on my next camping trip and see how it fairs by the fireside!
      All the best to you mate.

      Yeah the Pathfinder has a nice grip, i sold mine manly because i didn´t use it enough and have to many knives.
      So i did not know that the Bk2 was based on the british army survival knife, but it makes sense. Ethan Becker based his Bk7 also on the Mk.2

    Hallo Lukas,
    ist ein tolles Messer.
    Das hat mich einerseits überrascht, andererseits kann man sich auch zu einem sehr hohen Prozentsatz darauf verlassen, dass Mora immer wieder die Fähigkeit hat, als Budgetmesser eine absolut überzeugende Leistung abzuliefern.
    Das Pathfinder dürfte einen minimal höheren Anschliff haben... da hast du vollkommen recht. Zieht sich thematisch so ein wenig durch. Ansonsten top.
    Das war wieder ein sehr aufwendiges Video.
    Danke fürs Zeigen.
    Liebe Grüße und ein schönes Wochenende

      Schliff und Scheide könnte man nachbessern dann wäre es perfekt, aber vermutlich bei knapp unter 100 Euro.

    Really struggle to see any usefulness for the pathfinder design. I wouldn’t wanna be stuck with a blade that length and light. Then to top it off the tang doesn’t even go all the way through the handle. I know mora has a good track record. They also have many failures at the handle. Many don’t take pictures because moras are so cheap. They also have a strange cult that doesn’t like opinions that differ from their strange ideology.
    Wonder what it’s design purpose was supposed to be. I’m a experienced survival person an I’m clueless.
    I love that m95 an Karbala is the knife every kid had in Boy Scouts when I was young. Back then they were not very expensive you could always get old military issue from sunny surplus.

    • @megaronknives3032
      @megaronknives3032  Před rokem +1

      So it´s basically a modern Leuku, which most of them do not have full tangs either and do not have thick blades typically.
      They have been around for a long time and since they are made from carbon steel they do not break easily. It´s a matter of heat treatment in the end, wheter they are robust not.
      I would say Leukus are traditionally used for clearing green vegetation not for batoning, so they should not break doing that. Think of them like a compact machete knife, with featherstick capabilities.
      You can make the argument that it is too thick behind the edge for the finer cutting, but it´s made in Europe and costs 70Euros, so i guess thats fine.
      thank you for watching!

    • @richardhenry1969
      @richardhenry1969 Před rokem

      @@megaronknives3032 I understand what your saying but I disagree with it being a modern leaku. My reasons are the leaku I’ve seen growing up and even the new ones are a long heavy blade. Where the mora is light and a thin blade ( not talking about the thickness of the blade. I mean the height from cutting edge to top).
      I’m not so much care about a rat tail tang. The thing is older knives the tang went all the way through the handle and they were very substantial tangs.
      Nothing I see about the mora comes close to a traditional knife in design or use. Even the modern leaku that are 5”-6” (which is very small really) they are still more useful then the mora.
      In my opinion it’s designed just so the batoning people can baton bigger sticks. I’ve never found a need to baton. 99.9% of the reasons given on CZcams are ridiculous. Just like trying to split wood to get to the dry center. It’s much more efficient to shave a stick down then light it. Even wet will burn.
      My thinking is the mora was a gimmick item and most people have know idea what to use it for. I understand mora plastic handles are tough but they aren’t even close to a full frame knife. BPS adventurer is a amazing knife an it’s only $38 which is a few dollars more the a heavy duty companion. Also the BPS has a better grind. Sharpest knife I’ve ever bought a true scandi.
