    There’s been many a wreck ‘round our cruel Cornish coast, where many a soul has been lost,
    I’ll now tell you a tale, one more tragic than most, of all the poor lives that it cost,
    ‘Til she rounded The Lizard, the voyage was fine, but fate soon whipped up a storm,
    Into Falmouth the captain decided to sail, to shelter his ship ‘til the morn,
    Hera, Hera, lost on the foaming waves,
    Hera, Hera, doomed to her watery grave;
    With weather so bad, no sight could be had, of the lights from old Falmouth Town,
    Fogged blind, they shortened sail, in that fearsome, raging gale, yet most of the crew soon would
    drown,
    “Land ahead!” came the shout, the order “Hard about!”, but Hera turned slow in the gale,
    In that cold bleak and black, first a thud, then a crack, on Gull Rock’s jagged reef she was impaled,
    Hera, Hera, lost on the foaming waves,
    Hera, Hera, she was doomed to her watery grave;
    A lifeboat set out, as up went the shout, from Falmouth, they answered the call,
    When that brave crew drew near, a whistle they could hear, from those poor men lost in the squall;
    Hera, Hera, lost on the foaming waves,
    Hera, Hera, doomed to her watery grave;
    Nineteen men died that night, that terrible night, in the churchyard at Veryan they lay,
    Only five would survive, to thank god they were alive, by the dawn of the following day,
    Hera, Hera, lost on the foaming waves,
    Hera, Hera, she was doomed to her watery grave,
    Hera, Hera, lost on the foaming waves,
    Hera, Hera, she was doomed to a watery grave;

      Were so glad you enjoy our music. We always try to "hit different" and put a few twists on our sound. There are plenty of other groups out there who sing trad songs in a trad style... we like to think a little bit "outside-the-box" and bring a few surprises to the party. 🤨

    This original song recounts the true story of the 2000+ ton, German four-masted barque, HERA, which tragically sank on the evening of February 1st, 1914, killing 19 men (of the 24 man crew). She was wrecked on a rocky outcrop of jagged stones known as The Whelps (just off Gull Rock in Gerrans Bay, Cornwall, UK). Through a combination of factors, stormy weather, heavy seas, poor visibility and a malfunctioning compass, she foundered on those rocks and brought about what is considered to be one of the worst tragedies ever to befall a ship and her crew along the rugged Cornish coastline. The men who lost their lives on that fateful night are buried in a mass grave, in the cemetary at St Symphorian Church, Veryan. The grave itself, where those 19 poor men lay buried head to toe, is the longest single grave anywhere in the British Isles, measuring almost 100ft in length.
    we wanted to make a soundscape behind the music which would illustrate the conditions those unfortunate men were going through as the tragedy unfolded. As it took just ten minutes from striking the reef to the ship plunging beneath the waves, the men only had time to send up one distress rocket before manning the two small lifeboats in an attempt to save their own lives. Unfortunately, the seas ran so high and the gale force winds blew so fiercely that those lifeboats were swamped almost instantly. Those lucky enough, who managed to scramble their way back to the stricken vessel and the few who had remained onboard, now clambered up the jigger mast, the highest point now left above the icy waters. Only five of those poor men would survive to see daybreak, being saved by the brave crew of the Falmouth Lifeboat "Bob Newbon", after attracting attention by blowing constantly on the first officer's metal whistle. In the following hours, one by one, the bodies of those that the sea had claimed that night were washed ashore, being buried with their other drowned friends and shipmates in the graveyard of the church in the little village of Veryan. May they rest in peace. ✝

      Thanks Fatima. We're glad you are enjoying our music. It is a sad tale of circumstance, sheer bad luck and devastating loss, where many contributing factors led to the deaths of 19 men. Those poor souls perished, even though they were less than half a mile from shore and safety, due to the combination of foul weather, raging seas and the treacherous Cornish coastline, littered with hidden, jagged rocks and reefs, which had done for many a ship before HERA foundered on that fateful night. Only 5 of her 24 man crew survived to tell the tale. ✝

      Yes Jeremy, we wanted to make an atmospheric backdrop of sound for the song to illustrate the struggle those poor souls had to go through. The ethereal whistle, which eventually attracted the attention of the crew of the Falmouth lifeboat, led to 5 of the ship's company being saved. 19 souls from the 24 man crew of HERA were sadly drowned in those black, icy waters. ✝
