  • Most scientific researchers will have to deal with negative results at some point in their career. Unfortunately, authors who find themselves with negative results often don’t recognize their value and fail to report them. In addition, journals tend to favor papers that report positive findings. Publishing only positive results, however, leads to a skewed view of the system under study. For example, does a drug work at all stages of a pathogenic process or is it ineffective when administered late in the illness? Will shifts in vegetation driven by climate change alter the vulnerability of coastal wetlands to sea-level rise in some geographic locations but not others? Despite the importance of negative findings to a complete picture, authors often are at a loss when it comes to writing the paper. In this video. I cover five steps to writing a compelling scientific paper when you have negative findings. I use one of my own papers to show how I tackled the problem of negative results and ended up with a paper that was accepted with minor revision in a high-impact journal.

Another example of how you clearly explain a topic I really only loosely appreciated. Thank you.
