Fun fact about the Miura: It's supposed to resemble a bull when you look at it from the front when the doors are open, which is another reason for that sweep on the rear edge of the door.

I first "drove" a Lamborghini Miura during the winter of 1968-69 in Genoa, Italy, during the night, in a snowfall. As part of my college program, I worked on a cargo ship on a trip from the US to the Med and back. On the way back, we stopped to pick up 115 Fiats and a couple of exotics, including the orange Miura. When I saw they were loading the cars, I hurried down to the dockside and was drooling over the Miura, when the amused dockworkers motioned for me to get in. They pushed, and I steered by their hand signals, down the dock to where the car would be lifted into the hold. A glorious memory I will have forever, and obviously, my favorite Lamborghini!

I never really took to the Espada's design at all, but thought the Estoque concept was quite a smart looking car. I have a soft spot for the Jalpa (with the Rear Wing) and the Gallardo was a smart little car too in my view. Love the brand though and the team at the factory in Sant' Agata Bolognese come across as the loveliest, friendliest and most welcoming people.

Frank. Thank you for an outstanding review. When I was about 11 years old, I was walking home and passed by a dealer showroom, floor-to-ceiling glass display window featuring a Miura and an Espada parked side by side under glaring white lights facing the street. The two cars stopped me in my track as if I witnessing a divine event with a level of wonder and excitement that I remember to this day. Not sure how long I was stuck to the display window glass but I am sure that in the morning, the window cleaner spent a fair amount of time cleaning my fingerprints and slobber off.

The world without Lamborghini would be so sad. They take designs that other companies would only keep as concepts, and actually put them on the road. The Aventador hasn't aged a day for me, I like the original 2012 LP700-4 the most because there are no spoilers or excessive aero and it keeps the design looking very clean. IMO the Lamborghini Countach was a design language coup on what we thought super cars should look like. The design was so ahead of it time. For the first time you could by a super car that looked like what our imaginations could only wish for - for the future in automotive design. Certainly a pivotal moment in automotive history.

  • @TheLuisg92
    @TheLuisg92 Před 3 lety +2

I agree with the list, although I would give an honor mention to the one that started it all, the 350/400. The use of glass in that one is impressive, even more if one considers that it was their first effort.
With that being said, the Espada is the one I like the most because it doesn’t look like a Lamborghini at all with its engine placed in the front, room for 4 and a design that doesn’t scream for attention. Instead grabs the attention by being unique and having many subtle touches that make it interesting to look at from every angle. Just a fabulous, useful and unique design.

@@tharushsomashekar This duct design was developed by NACA specifically for its aerodynamics, ie to extract flow over the panel without drag loss. But it only works if the shape and ramp angle are correct. Some car designs have NACA-loooking ducts for purely styling reasons, a bit like a modern hatch-back with a diffuser under the rear that isn't actually connected to the rest of the under-floor aero.

Thanks for this amazing video! My 3 favorite Lamborghinis are the Veneno, the og Countach LP400 (without the wing!) and the Diablo.
The Veneno, because it's hands down the most ridiculous, in your face design I've ever seen on a car, and I was completely blown away when I saw it for the first time.
The Countach LP400 in particular, because I absolutely adore Gandini's original design, without all the weird add-ons that followed over the years. The LP400 looks so pure and futuristic, it's hard not to be fascinated when you see it.
The Diablo, because it was the first dream car of my childhood. I've had a yellow 1/18 Diablo model car as a kid, and took it with me everywhere I went, like a teddy bear.

Marcello Gandini "penned" some of the most beautiful cars ever made, like the Citroen Camargue, Fiat X1/9, and great superminis like the Renault 5 and the Autobianchi A112. And the awesome Alfa Romeo Montreal. In terms of Lambos, the Miura and the Countach are awesome but i'd have to go also with the Gallardo. It's a simply beautiful car that sums up the design language that I call "small, wide, and low" that gives this image of raw power.

Do a video on the top 3 VWs. VW made only a few trurly iconic designs but If you look in to it they made a surprisingly high number of beautiful cars that didn’t become famous. The obvious answers would be Beetle, mark 1 Golf, Type 2 bus. But If you look closer you have the Ghia, the Type 3 fastback it was based on, the mark 1 scirocco which in my opinion looks even better than it’s brother the Golf, you have the SP2 from VW Brazil which has one of the nicest rear ends I have ever seen(the stereotype about brazilians and the obsession with nice butts comes to mind), the W12 nardo which has all the VW roundness and kindness you could ever want ON A SUPERCAR, the W12 Golf concept which is so wrong yet so right, the new Arteon which is what becomes of a VW after an 80s movie training montage and makeover. VW makes understated cars but some of them really are pretty.

It is the Espada that makes my heart beat go up, literally. THE ultimate dream car to have. It is SO beautifully perfectly designed that I simply can not find anything or any detail out of tune. It stands as design perfection at its finest, for me at least. The Marzal would have been the true ultimate but I can understand that production would have been impossible perhaps. The Espada is the imaginary practical perfect rendition of the Marzal I think. Next would be the LP400, the origal production in its purity. Last but not least the Murciélago because it announced the modern styling language, and it looks timeless, like what the original LP400 did at the time still looking fantastic as well.

hello mr Stephenson - found out about your work just before purchasing my first BMW E53 (super excited - I love this Bulgarian Gangster vibe of that car) - and the funny thing is I always loved most of your designs. your channel is such a great contribution in building understanding for beautiful design.
One thing - when you're explaining designs, you can use your Apple Pencil to draw on the pictures - it would be easier to visually grasp what you mean.
    Have a nice day! :)
    Teodor

Please take a look at the 1991 Audio Quattro Spyder (it's the orange one)---concept car and it's amazing. Few know of its existence, but it seems to me the perfect car. Similar to the first Lambo you mention.

I think its ugly, is a pure functional design

    • @stokovsky8483

@@marciliojunior4919 That is far from truth. Gordon specifically designed the front of the car without spoilers (which would additionaly provide downforce as a function). You can clearly see that on the T.50, the front is very uniform. Not to mention the lack of rear wing... Downforce is provided via a turbine, which enabled the cars design to be more elegant / spoiler free.

@@stokovsky8483 Downforce compromises straight line speed. Maybe he left it like that not to produce too much downforce.

The Espada is a good looking car and I prefer it of the first two. I would consider this being similar to looking at a Corvette and a Chevelle and picking the Chevelle.

For me, Murcielago is best looking car ever. Modern, but not too modern, will stay fresh for many years. Absolute classic. Miura is also very cool.

  • @AbandonedRaven
    @AbandonedRaven Před 3 lety +1

The Miura is one of the few cars I don’t understand why everyone likes. I understand when it comes to the chassis/engine/history etc. but on looks alone I wasn’t the biggest fan of this car. I do think it’s stunning when you open the car up with the two bonnets opposite of each other. Also when it comes to the Countach, the Walter Wolf Special Countach in red is one of my favorite Lamborghinis ever.
My 3: Diablo SV, Countach, and Sesto Elemento.

My top three is probably boring for most:
    3. Gallardo 5.0
    2. Huracan Evo
    1. Aventador S
The Aventador was the gamechanger for me. First seeing the Diablo back in the late 90's solidified Lamborghini as being my favourite brand, but the Aventador captured my heart in a way I never would have expected from a car. I initially hated the S refresh, especially with the SV's intakes as I found they broke the lines and smoothness of the car, but now I find it difficult to look at the LP-700. I've been working on a project for the last decade or so that I hope will allow me to actually buy one some day!

You talk about giving the engineers a challenge. The Muira was clever, the Contach must have been a nightmare. I remember trying to get in one and at 6'3 it was a real challenge but what a magnificent machine.

I love the Countach but it is as aerodynamic as a brick. I was designed to look outrageous but is has nothing to do with aerodynamics ;)

Ive studied aerodynamics and other than the front bumper, its not so bad.
Sloped front, shallow transition to roof, kamm tail. It bears some resemblance to a Prius, and is pretty ok overall.

Yes you picked some beauties , the muira being the king , wonder what you think of the modern ones and maybe do a feature on that . Also throw the Urus into the mix. Would be great to see your take .
