Wow! What memories this brings back of the Safari back home in the day. Irreplaceable. The Stratos, the 205's, the Audi's, the celica's - all amazing. And Mikola, Salonen, Kankunen, Mouton, Vatanen .... the list goes on.
By far the greatest rally of all time. A inspiration and lifelong goal of mine is to compete in this. Hopefully this amazing event will continue as long as rally still exhists. A true test of men and machine.
This is not just a rally it is pure art! This fantastic WRC rushing through the unique african landscape and this challenge between man&mashine is something you can only see in this unique event. After they chancelled this event from the calender the whole sport lost a big part too.
This video is superb, it brought tears to me eyes, my dad and granddad always talked about it, to stand there and watch all this happen right before you eyes is just awe inspiring... one of the best tribute videos ever..
The spirit of the kenyan horizon spectacular and the speed mixed with dust and remnants of the some what monsoon rains. I have know words to describe the ever changing climate and the vast horizon of acacia trees and thick dust. The safari rally and all the pro contestants need to come back to the ragged red soil and test their machines to victory on the Kenyan soil that humbles the most experienced drivers.
This is Africa! The best rally on the planet! Thank you Joost!!!!
This brought back so many memories, watching Patrick Njiru, Miki Biason and the other drivers. every easter was rally weekend. Best clip on you tube so far

I am a Kenyan and a great lover of the Safari Rally. I must commend you for this Great video, its really awesome. A scaled down version of the safari rally is still held anually and so is the 'Classic Safari Rally' that is held bi-annually.

Here in Paraguay we have a very similar rally which is the "Rally del Chaco" or "Transchaco Rally" and is being held now in the western desert of the country which is called "El Chaco"

joost i hope you plan on keeping this vid on you tube for a very long time. The Sound track you selected perfect. I thing you should be making movies by now. I miss The Safari Rally because i really paid close attention to it in my teens and so the event will always be a reminder of my youth. This Sport now Falls in the old school category of my life events. The heart of the rally is pretty much the unpredictable events that unfold.

the late great Richard Burns conquered the Safari rally in a 555 Subaru Impreza.Colin Mc'rae's 555 Subaru was also a winner.The deal is,in the Safari Rally,the fun,the challenge,the drama,the tradition, is the whole idea.

The IRC is the International Rallye Challenge. In this Championship are only Super 2000 and Group N Rallye car allowed. Fiat Grande Punto, Peugeot 207 or Volkswagen Polo for example (Super 2000) or Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru Impreza (Group N).
Except for that last "made by Joost", an excellent video.

Safari might come back in 2013. The FIA has been interested in bringing it back. It would be more like the IRC Safari event though. No plans to make it like the traditional event. The Kenyan government supports it and they hope to get extra sponsors as well. The FIA will observe the Rally in 2010 and 2011 to see if it's viable. Then in 2012 they'll place their bid and maybe then it will be on the 2013 WRC calendar.

i remember waking up at 4.30 am and driving out of the city with my dad where we would spend the whole day watching.

I have watched a couple of videos of the Chaco Rally and it looks very hard, but there isnt lots of information on this rally all i know is that it started in 1971 (18 years after the safari rally) and that the Chaco rally was based and was created from the safari rally's character but i would like to know more like how long is the event? and who are these "specialists that say its tougher than the safari rally??
thats just one rally driver out off over 35 famous rally drivers who all say that the safari rally the toughest rally event
Please please can we all agree to bring this world event back to Kenya. The rally is close enough to the Paris dakar. The advertising the week of the rally was all epic. The drivers could really not expect anything but the unexpected. Sometimes doing 140 kph on the open was the very thing to do and sometimes it was the very thing that got you out of the rally after striking some wild animal. none the less WRX rally drivers who think they are the best should take this event back to kenya and battle it out. RIP Collin Mcrae. I remember he is the one European driver who had developed a mastery in tackling those kenyan roads doing almost 200kph. Subaru reigned supreme in 95,96 & 97.
I think they had to stop due licenses and too many animals.

WRC comes back to Kenya the FIA will Mess up the safari making it a single service park event on smooth roads and short sections the safari belongs in the past both for its drivers and spectators
It's not a question of "better than..." They are different races, like F1 and Le Mans24hrs.
Even Markku Alén came to compete in an Lancia Delta, he narrowly lost to local driver Martin Masi in a Ford Escort RS Cosworth
Unfortunately we will never see a wrc car racing the safari rallye. But the IRC will race 2007!
To put it simple, the Safari Rally as it used to be doesn't fit in the current FIA concept. It doesn't have the status as a modern rally, altough the IRC round is totally different than what it used to be in the WRC.
This is not what i was looking for when i searched "east african safari rally tribute". CZcams removed the other video.
