  • Today, our Ultimate World Cruise visits Hong Kong, and we live like a local. We visit street markets, go shopping, have an amazing dim sum lunch, and visit the streets at night. This is the way to tour Hong Kong, like a local. We had help from Jacky Wong, who owns This is Asia tour company. He was one of the best tour guides we’ve had on our around the world trip. You can find him at: www.hongkongprivatetourguide.com. Note we are not in any way sponsored. I'm just very happy with Jacky!
Please note, one correction on the video HSBC stands for Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation. sometimes you just miss speak, sorry. 😔

Next to St John's Cathedral is Castaways, a charity shop that sells donated goods. It was opened more than 30 years ago by a British lady. She still helps out at the shop after all these years. I love her dearly. She is one of the kindest person I've ever met.

Thank you for your wonderful series of videos from the Ultimate World Cruise. I stumbled upon your channel about 2-3 weeks ago by accident and was hooked. I love that you are making Phase 2 such a celebration of life by seeing this great big planet 🌎 I turned 60 in 2023 and I am trying to figure out just what I want the next phase of my life to be about. Travel has always been a part of my life yet there are so many places I still have on my bucket list. Thanks Nancy and Mike for all the inspiration ❤

The two bronze lion sculptures were nicknamed Stephen(in honour of Alexander Stephen, the General Manager of Shanghai Branch. He was the one who conceived the idea after seeing the stone lion outside the Arsenal Gate in Venice) & Stitt(Gordon Stitt, Shanghai Manager at that time).
The return of Stephen & Stitt(here I mean the sculptures, not the persons😅) after the war was actually rather intriguing. They were brought to Japan as scrap metal. Fortunately the war was over before they were melted & were abandoned in a Japanese naval dock in Osaka. An American sailor, bless his soul, spotted them by chance. He had never been to HK but remembered seeing a similar pair outside the Shanghai branch. He notified the bank & rescue mission was organized immediately.
To think that we almost lost our Stephen & Stitt forever if not for the sharp eyes(& memory) of the American sailor!

Going to new places every few days has to be overwhelming. We left on our trip across North America 8 months ago, moving every 5-7 days. A month ago, we hit a wall and canceled most of our summer plans to stay in Vermont and Quebec and take in the hiking and cycling. It's only been a month and we are much better. But we. Are driving and cooking our own food. Keep having fun.

The majority of the "ladies of the night" you see along Temple Street are from the Mainland China. They don't necessarily have citizenship. They apply for the "Two Way Exit Permit" & can stay in HK up to 14 days. They have to reapply every 3 month.
The TWE Permit does not allow working in HK, so occasionally we hear news about these women being arrested & deport back to China.

So pleased to see you enjoy Hong Kong. I'm a Hong Kong permanent resident originally from the UK been there 20 years. I used to work for both of the biggest supermarket chains. 60% of all food shopping is done in the "wet markets" you visited rather than the modern supermarkets! Dim sum is traditionally breakfast food.

    • @livingphase2

Things that are sold in the Ladies' Market(day & night) & Temple Street(night only) are either cheap stuff from Taobao or fake designers'. I always tell my foreign friends: you can have a stroll there to feel the atmosphere, but don't buy from there. They are overpriced.

Our experience was that and sit down restaurants you may leave a small tip somewhere around 10% depending on the restaurant and of course the service. Note that service charges may be automatically added in some places.. You might do a small roundup. Four things like private guides you have to consider the experience and the guide. We did tip our guide at the end.
