Not to be negative but when you hear this from Mick and how Vince really wanted to make sure he got this main event before he was done it kinda seems interesting when you think back to the things Punk said after he left WWE. The major gripe he had after he was gone and the thing he mentioned that made him so upset towards the end of his time was how he felt he should get the main event and that he never did. And he mentioned how he felt he could’ve been thrown into the second Rock v Cena match and would’ve been happy because he would’ve finally been able to say he’d gotten that main event.
When you listen to Mick here and how Vince was almost insistent for Mick to be in it and how badly he wanted Mick to have it you wonder if Punk had been more like Mick was attitude wise - happy to do the things he was asked and not majorly negative about things he didn’t agree on if that could’ve happened for Punk at some point. Almost makes you think that Vince will do these favor spots in a sense for guys he feels are really loyal and have done what he asks but goes the other way for guys he doesn’t feel that way about. When you look back to Micks title runs he won three times but never had a long run. Those were probably times where they wanted Mick to have it but didn’t feel he should be carrying it long over an Austin or rock. I felt the same way when Miz got his recent title win. They knew the long term direction of things but figured they’d reward a king tenured guy with something. Obviously I know nothing for fact but it feels that way at times when you look back on some stuff.

Humility goes farther than pride does. Mick from what I have always heard was a very humble guy.

its easy to convince someone to play a badass tough guy on tv, its much harder to have someone willingly humiliate themselves for the sake of the company, vince probably appreciated mick cause he was willing to be the butt of the joke without a fight and rewarded him as such. same with Miz. Punk on the other hand complained that he was being buried anytime he didnt get a decisive win.

Something people have to remember is that Mick Foley was still under contract with the WWF at the time, even after what was supposed to be his retirement match at No Way Out. He has to do what Vince McMahon tells him to do.

Why did Mick retire the 3 gimmicks & wrestle as himself?

(i have No Idea, as far as firsthand knowledge; this is merely my guess) after making such an impact in wrestling, as three different 'people', wouldnt You want people to know your Real name? also, usually Vince McMahon/WWE(/F, back then) technically owns the rights to a character, from the 'look' to the angle to the name...thats why Glen Jacobs (I. Yankem, DDS; Kane) briefly played "Diesel" after Kevin Nash jumped to WCW (and similar to why the Real "Razor Ramon" just went by Scott Hall after doing the same)...the 'risk' about wrestling under your Actual Name (like John Cena, for example) is that someone else has the rights to your Actual Name...
