@@larrypatty8333 Actually, they head-end locomotives are electrically controlled through jumper cables. And, yes, only the lead engine has a crew. That's why William is saying that that specific locomotive saved the crew.

@@larrypatty8333 Ah, right, I'd not noticed the "crewS".
Locomotives on the head end are definitely controlled by cables, not by radio. Locomotives in the middle of the train or on the end are radio-controlled, but not head-end power. Look at 1:11 in the video -- the big yellow cable held in a sort of "w" shape at the front of the locomotive is the multiple-unit connection. It's a 27-core cable that carries the control signals between the locomotives. You're seeing it there in the stowed position, presumably because the locomotive was the last in the consist, so the end we're looking at there was connected to the first car of the train, rather than another locomotive. The smaller black cables you see hanging down through holes in the top of the pilot are the locomotive brake connections. Google "US locomotive MU control" for more information -- the article at the Railway Technical Website has a lot of detail.

@Signaltrack1 the truck did not proceed after the signals were activated. They were stopped and stalled over the tracks when the signals became activated and then did not attempt to clear the crossing up. I used to see it all the time where people were blocked inside the crossing by the gates and freeze. Little do they know those gates are lightweight and easily broken if driven through. If it were up to me as a driver, I'd rather take some scratches on my car from the gate than the scratches a locomotive will put on it as they shove it down the tracks at 40mph+. The other problem I witnessed constantly were people who were going to drive around the gates and spot the train after they've gotten around the first gate. Then they stop, put their car in reverse and try to back up. That's usually when the train strikes them! I wish I could tell them "If you're gonna be stupid, commit to the job and don't back out halfway!" because if they had kept going, I probably would have missed them.

Considering the way our court systems handle criminal matters these days, they likely accepted a plea offer from the Defendant, gave him a much lighter sentence, which was probably time already served and turned him loose before his court date was scheduled. At best we can hope he never drives anything bigger than an SUV and cannot cause this type of wreck again.
Train crewmen are rarely represented in court at a favorable level. I'd wager, the judge probably agreed that the only reason the driver was assessed criminal charges was because there were resulting injuries. Otherwise they would have just given him a ticket. Meanwhile the train crewmen who were injured got time off with no pay and are praying that someday FELA will kick in so the railroad will give them some sort of compensation. If they have to take the railroad to court, then they can never go back to work without constantly looking over their shoulder and making sure they dot ever I and cross every T so as to not get fired.

Several million dollars of property damage will also tip that scale.

@beeble2003 that is true, but lately it seems like a lighter sentence is imposed so they can say they didn't overpopulate the jail. A train crewman was injured and lost pay because of a careless action of another and the only recourse they'll have is to sue their employer whose not at fault either, technically.

I couldn't tell if crossing signals were flashing.
IMHO he escort company failed by not advising the railroad - they should know the route in advance. Also should have measured the crossing height/load length/load clearance. In the case of an escorted load, I do'nt know who is the "Captain of the ship". A good driver would not blindly follow the escort.
When I was riding a school bus, the driver had to stop B4 the crossing, open the door and his side window, and also would holler to the kids to quiet down. He then waited, listening, for at least 30 seconds before proceeding. And he proceeded without delay.
STM had I been this driver I would stop, get on the ground and feel/listen to the rail. You can sense an approaching train. I drove 53' TV trucks with low clearance, and never crossed a hump without checking clearance. I guess it worked, I am retired now with an accident free record. I got called out as an old woman. But I retired alive and my escuchtion was unsmirched.
