Kris Kristofferson - Me And Bobby McGee (1979)

- Kris's tribute to Dorsey Burnette
Dorsey last appeared in public on August 18, 1979 at The Performing Arts Center in Oxnard, California, the day before he died of a massive coronary at his home in Canoga Park, California, aged 46. He played a half hour show at a benefit for the Arthritis Foundation.
Patrick Landreville, who played the final show with Dorsey, stated
"Most people that play benefits for national or international charities get paid for their performances, at the least their expenses are paid. But Dorsey and I choose to play for free at these affairs, though neither one of us is well off financially. Dorsey is a legendary figure in music and could command a hefty sum for his services but he's chosen to give, not to take. I'm proud to know him and to have had the opportunity to make music with him and I'm especially proud that he considers me his peer."
After his death, singer and friend Delaney Bramlett organized a benefit concert for Dorsey's widow at the Forum in Inglewood, California, in which Kris Kristofferson, Hoyt Axton. Tanya Tucker, Glen Campbell, Edward James Olmos,Duane Eddy, Delaney and Bonnie, Gary Busey, Maureen McGovern and Roger Miller appeared.
The song:
Kris once said that he has never written a song on assignment, except for this one.
But this was really kind of a funny story...
Fred Foster (record producer and Monument Records chief) gave him the idea for it.
Fred had been asked by some friends who were working with a girl named Bobby McKee, if there was something with him and her, and he answered, "What! Me and Bobby McKee! Never!" Maybe that rhymed so nicely that he wanted Kris, who had just started writing for Combine Music, to write a nice song about it. He called him up, "I have a song title for you. It's Me and Bobby McKee, and the hook is, Bobby is a SHE!" For Kris this sounded like the worst idea for a song, but Fred said, "they'll be traveling around or something", and, "Try to write it." This was really not easy for Kris since he usually arranges his own thoughts into songs. So he hid from Fred for a couple of months not to be asked about it, before he really started thinking about the song. But then he saw this movie "La Strada" by Fellini, with Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina. And there were some scenes in it that inspired him for the story and the famous line "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose...." He just got the name a little wrong...
What, me and Bobby McKee? Never!"
- Hudba
2024 and I'm still listening to it....and feeling good.
So am I.

It’s almost 2024

Kris is a legend..who listening in 2021 👍👍

I love you

Yes, I fully agree!
Kris is One Of The Best All-Time performers........... and remember he was an Army Officer & and a Rhodes Scholar too !
Maybe that’s WHY he was able to write and conduct his business so well??!!
Hogwash
Absolutely the Best!
Kris a Rhodes Scholar, served in the Navy!
Yes, he was. Also, was to go to West Point to teach English. Instead, he went to Nashville to write songs. Kris put his heart into every song he wrote. I wish I had at least one chance to have met him. He's also a sexy man who played in a lot of movies.
I heard he was Evac pilot and was in helicopter hauling people out and wrote this song while active duty..
What can I say? I just love this guy. He has such a fine tuned soul and such a great talent to write those beautiful songs out of his heart. So great!
Not many words left that hasn't already been said. But in my words he's one of the greatest songwriters there is. Plus the voice is unmistakably great. Still grateful he still with us. Love him and his great career.
I just watched a country music documentary by Ken Burns, and just found out how much this man influenced country music. Wow.
Where have you been Heather?
With Johnny Cash!
I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday morning, than to listen to the music of man that has given God's people so much joy. Kris, you and Waylon, Willie, Tom Petty, and other, fine American song writers and artists, are maybe one of the only reasons for anyone to claim America, today. I read that you took some grief from your family, for not staying in the military and making it a career. The reality though, is that music is the thing that has a lasting impact on people. It doesn't cost millions of lives, and it inspires, in an HONEST way. God Bless brother....
Sunday morning, coming down
The man can do.what ever he sets his mind to. Highly intelligent, good looking, flies helicopters , a veteran, Rhodes Scholar, Graduates university. The list goes on. He is a giant amongst Men. ☮️☮️☮️
God he wrote some of the best songs!! So deep and so emotional!!
Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Rhodes Scholar -- the guy's got a lot on the ball
Funny to think that this old country song was inspired by Fellini’s La Strada. Talk about emotional. That movie’s too hard to watch
Kris did that because he honest and wrote and played with his heart,
but pearl sang it better
@@OIII-IOOO who is Pearl? If you had said Janis Joplin I would have believed you. But, Kris wrote that song and he put his heart and soul into that song.
Kris is one of the best ever! I think i will have engraved on my tombstone "I will trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday"
One problem you won't have any days to trade. No one can go back noteven for one day. Except in our memories.

One of the best and most enduring songs Kris ever wrote.
There are too many....my favourites are "Why me,Lord"..."Sunday morning coming down"...
All these years, still NOTHIN' LEFT TO LOSE... Love this song, still.
Best song he ever wrote, I love it and I love Kris. He has made such amazing poetry in his songs. keep her lit Kris, as we say in Northern Ireland
2024, and I'm also still listening to it. It's great!
My dad has been gone for 26 years; I'm now in my 60's. This was his favourite song. "Freedom just another word for nothing left to lose........"

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to loose." Wow!
This was the first number I ever saw Kris Kristofferson perform - many decades later it's still in my repertoire.
There is no one like Kris Kristofferson. He has that unique voice, the sound and the look. He was also great in the 1976 version of A Star is Born - the best one!
Without a doubt, one of the best songs ever written.
He's sung this in many different ways. I love the dynamism of those diverse interpretations.
His originally released recording really captures the song’s meaning best of all, for me. Better than Joplin’s, even.
One of the sexiest men that ever lived! He has sung my life.
You must have had some pretty dubious professions.
No dubious professions. Just talking about life experiences in general. If you don't get it hearing him sing, you may find it somewhere else. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I just really love Kris and his songs, those he sang, and those he wrote for others.
One of the sexiest men to ever walk the earth and good right down to his bones .
There is only one Kris Kristofferson. Love him to bits!

There seem to be a few: love 'em all
My year of birth and I was so honored beeing at a gig of his in 2017 in Hannover / Germany and when he entered the stage he touched my hand and the organizer of the concert asked me to help out in security after the gig and go a nice signed picture from Kris for that!
Just incredible, Kris is quite simply a brilliant singer song writer, love it ❤
The first time I heard this song I was 16 and it was Janis Joplin who sung. Only many years after that I discovered Kris singing it...what can I say? Two completely different styles but both with the amazing lyrics of Kris...I wish they would sing it together! Crazy!
Believe it or not, the first time I heard this song that has become my anthem, it was by Gordon Lightfoot! Great song! Best version, obviously, Kris!!!
Kris magically compresses and delivers 300 years of American history into his voice and lyrics
Yum!!! I could watch and listen to him all day.
50 Years and he’s still got it today now that’s a star for ever
The likes of these great singers will never be seen again! Class!
Between him and Willie Nelson, they were and STILL are the most prolific and greatest writers of USA Country music who ever lived in my humble opinion. THANK GOD WE STILL HAVE BOTH OF THEM!! ANNND that's in no way detracting from all of our other great writers of USA Country music either for example the wonderful Carter Family. I just hope they both go on to write another few songs and they'll go STRAIGHT TO NUMBER 1 on the Country music charts too.
He was fantastic in 1979 and so very handsome. And he still is, now he's in his 80's. Love him..........
Happy 87 Candles Kris Kris! ❤
The man was blessed and anointed❤️ Love him from here to forever.
writers are gone....Kris will live on....I made sure with my children
If I Played this Song on a Juke Box in a Pub in America Anywhere, I'm Sure Everyone Would Sing Along.

All those years & its still brilliant.
Happy Birthday Kris Kristoffersonxx
One of the best songs ever!!!
Best ever "country" song. Great lyrics. Kris at his best. Sings really well. But JANIS took this song and made it her own. Simply phenomenal.
Love this! Kris really did this up right.
Wisdom in this song!
Kris is and was the best songwriter ever... He sure has a great face...
how very true connie ,i havben't heard anyone do it better
Connie Germany beulk
@@brianbyrne7276 or look that good doing it!! :) he has just got it the WHOLE way around
I think he and many of the old work horse musicians of the time, including Kris, probably would call Steve Goodman the songwriter they were all trying to keep up with, and now still trying to honor. Willie Nelson learned to slow down and use common phrases, minimizing the guitar almost to nothing and then bringing up the tension. This is that kind of song too! Steve never knew any of this, he would say something like boy, that Nelson guy was so nice to me all weekend! He made me two chicken sandwiches and listened to me sing and play, he even watched while I was writing! What a nice guy! But none of the good ole boys plagiarized or took advantage of him, and of course he wasn’t the only one to use these techniques, and a bazillion others. Steve was deeply loved, no matter how many of that generation we lose, it is the mention of Steve Goodman that could even make Cash cry openly!

kris kristofferson a living legand
I could listen to Kris all day and night - every song that he has written is right from his heart and soul.
The world of music and all who enjoy good music owe a great deal to him. Count me in with that throng.
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the trains
Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained
Took us all the way to New Orleans
I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
And was blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues
With them windshield wipers slappin' time and
Bobby clappin' hands we finally sang up every song
That driver knew
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
And nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues
And buddy, that was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.
From the coalmines of Kentucky to the California sun
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Standin' right beside me through everythin' I done
And every night she kept me from the cold
Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away
She was lookin' for the home I hope she'll find
Well I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday
Holdin' Bobby's body close to mine
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
And nothin' left was all she left to me
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues
And buddy, that was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

Outstanding commentary to go along with the wonderful video! Great story about the origins of the song "Me and Bobby McGee."
May God Bless Kris Kristofferson ! And I loved him in "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", "Payback" and "Blade". Peace&Love !

Despite his success and awards, I also feel he is one of the most underappreciated artist of our era. The quality and volume of his works put him among the greatest songwriters/composers of the past century, in the same class as Dylan, Hank Sr, and Duke Ellington. Fascinating character as well, Rhodes Scholar, Amy Captain, and permanently disowned by his family for leaving the army to pursue music.
