The Houston Astros Are Great, No Matter How Much We Hate

  • Although they've been embroiled in scandal for the past 2 years, it's time to face the truth: The Houston Astros didn't NEED to cheat to win it all. This was proven when they almost made the World Series last year and are back on the precipice once more.
After the sign stealing scandal broke in 2019, I thought the Astros never be true contenders again. But they've proven me wrong this season, and while I won't root for them, I can at least watch them play without guilt.
So take a look into why the Astros doing what they did will linger forever, but it shouldn't diminish what they're doing now.

Bro, thanks for being open about the team I root for.
And just to be clear every major league team has cheated some way. I don't excuse what the Astros did but they are very talented and I guess that's why a lot of people hate them now.
It's funny how the media in New York and Boston turn the blind eye to what they did.
But at the end of the day this is entertainment no matter how we slice it. Every major sport has been hit with some type of cheating scandal because of money.
I hope your fans will understand at the end of the day it's all about money!
Thank you for the great video!
    Go Astros!

Because their the Red Sox. If this exact same thing was going on in Boston, NY or LA nothing would have come of it. There is still a letter the Yankees sued to not have to open to the public. Yankees and Red Sox were fined for the watch scandal and they say it wasn’t what the Astros were doing but it was. They were using a camera to relay signs to the person wearing the watch and to the hitter. They were just quite about it instead of hitting trash cans. Beltran brought it from the Yankees with his ideas of how to improve it.

Verlander went out early in the first inning of the first game, needing TJ surgery so he was gone for 2020 & 2021. Cole was with the NYY starting in 2020. Ok, full disclosure I'm an Astro fan. I'm also a former college athlete. I bring this up because I hate cheating and I was uncomfortable wearing an Astros hat outside of Houston till about a year ago because I was ashamed. Please here me out and slow your troll because this is not a fanboy post. The individual who posted this video said he did not know if the Astros would ever be able to compete for a playoff spot without cheating. The current playoff format allows four division winners and two wildcard teams. That is 6 out of 15 in each league. The Al west which the Astros are in is not exactly a horrible division but it is not the Nl west or Al east either. Furthermore, those people that do not follow the Astros or get to watch 162 games a year do not see the overall talent. The cheating was at home with the bull pen cameras and the trash cans which is what Mike Fiers and the MLB said. If you know anything at all about baseball with all due respect to the author of this video you have to win on the road to win a world championship including during the regular season. Teams that do not learn how to win in tough environments can be solid but never great. In 2017 the so called fake championship year. In 2017 the Astros had a better road record than home record. How many people point that out. They also won 2 world series games including game 7 on the road against a Dodgers team that was awesome at home. In the ALCS against Yankees NY scored I believe 3 runs in 4 games in Houston. The Astros won the first two games at home in that series 2-1. The cameras sure were not helping much those games. When you score 3 runs in 4 games as the Yankees did in the ALCS on the road a pennant is very hard to win. Yes in game 7 of the World Series do I believe Dodgers starter YU Darvish was tipping his pitches and the Astros picked up on that, yes absolutely. However, a team taking advantage of that is NOT CHEATING. That's been happening since Babe Ruth and before then even. It is a teams job to prevent that. If you disagree with that you do not know baseball. Finally, what the Astros did was shitty and I hate it as a life long fan. But when people say like this author of this video he did not know if they would ever compete for a playoff spot or be a contender without cheating that is ridiculous. They were 53-28 on the road without the bullpen camera during that season. I'm not excusing anything I was ashamed of it. Just take this in to account, when you only watch a team a few times a year during the post season it is hard to really know how good they are. Furthermore, did Justin Verlander suddenly become good because of outfield cameras while the Astros were HITTING. Finally, I never write these or usually care about all this talk. But the author of this video saying he did not think the Astros could exist without cheating is ridiculous. So if you want to hate them I really do not blame you. I hate the Dodgers and Yankees payroll and buying wins. Is that a form of cheating? Nah even though I hate it and its bad for the game. What the Astros did was bad for the game but not even ever contending again is a crazy thing to say. If you believe that you do not know baseball. Before i get trolled I promise you I hate what they did in 2017 especially because I believe they were the best team that season with or without cameras.

What most fans do not know is that in 2017 the Yankees and Red Sox were using tech to relay pitches to their hitters. Rob Manfred visited Houston in late July of that year and AJ Hinch met with him and complained about the cheating by the Yankees and Red Sox that had been going on since 2016. Manfred said his typical “we will look into it” and did nothing. This was widely reported by the Houston media at the time. Once the Astros saw that the commissioner’s office was not going to punish the cheating teams, the Astros began to devise and use their cheating system. In short, they out cheated the cheaters and won the World Series in 2017. Since 2020, a lot has come out about all of this and indeed, the Yankees and Red Sox were found to have cheated. The Yankees fought tooth and nail to keep the commissioner’s letter sealed while many of their players hypocritically badmouthed the Astros. The Red Sox’s Chris Sale spoke out about many teams cheating in baseball. I’m not condoning cheating in any way here. Just saying that there was more to this than was reported in the national media. So there it is, the whole story.

There’s so much info out there about Altuve not taking signs and about the buzzer bullshit, give it a rest.
You have to understand that they stole signs because they felt they needed to keep up with norm in baseball. How do you get guys like Bassit, Votto, and texiera saying there were other teams doing stuff.
I’m just tired of the constant crying over something that’s been going on in baseball for decades. The league never chose to do anything about it. They even knew Houston was doing it and didn’t act. The report stated that 12-13 teams had reported Houston and the system was less effective because teams changed their signs so much.
Now there’s reports from Duke university and baseball prospectus that show the sign stealing system really didn’t provide them any advantage and many times hurt them. So this entire “only won because they stole signs” thing is bs.
Bottom line they cheated, yea but stop with the hypocrisy. This sport is riddled with cheaters. The Astros aren’t the first team to steal signs and win a World Series. There have been teams that stole signs and lost World Series. Quite a few actually. There’s also teams that stole signs and lost 100s of games. I’m just saying quit bitching because there’s a high chance your fave team stole signs.
As for the video maker, you’re a Mets fan?? lol read Mike Scott’s book, he talks about the Mets stealing signs from 79-82 with a camera and tv in the bullpen. BP catcher would relay signals to the hitter. Mets never finished above 500 over this time.

What does that matter when a player from a team can use binoculars, get the signs and relay them to the hitter just as quickly. The use of cameras to steal signs started making its way into baseball around the 70s. The 70s Indians were one of the biggest culprits but never had anyone spill the beans on their team afaik. We’ve had a few instances of former players talk about their teams doing it. McDowell said the ChiSox used cameras in the managers office and had a toggle switch to flick a light on the scoreboard which would top hitters, Mike Scott said his Mets used cameras in the bullpen and signaled the hitter from the pen. I still don’t follow your logic. How are binoculars and telescopes any different. Codebreaker was nothing more than a spreadsheet that was used to figure out signal sequences. Honestly I’m over this. They cheated. The sport is filled with cheaters. If fans wanna plug their ears and close their eyes when we talk about the games history so they can be mad at the Astros then whatever. so who cares I’m done trying to convince people about things they don’t want their mind changed about. This is true. Correa said specifically that Jose Altuve was disgusted by the cheating. He wanted to try and win honestly without cheating and actually got mad when teammates were sending him the signs. Unfortunately, his older, less talented teammates would not allow him to try to win on an even playing field. I respect Altuve for taking that stand, and I hope that years from now, people will remember this when he is considered for the Hall of Fame. It would be a shame if he were excluded the way Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and other famous cheaters have been excluded.

Pop-up, line-out, base hit, homer, strikeout, foul, and on and on. You can't often control fate when a pitch comes to you. A batter must try to make contact and hope for the best.

Yet here we are YEARS later and its the same played out argument. What are we little girls holdin on to little highschool girl grudges? The astros in 2019 hit as good as murderers row and lost in the WS. The red sox in 18 used the scheme against the astros. You dont see them whining about it and it wouldn't have changed anything. Lost a great manager lost a great gm. Got fined. Lost draft picks and was booed from coast to coast. Was it chicken 💩? Yes it was. I mean I waited 33 years for that moment! But 4 years later, there is nothing anyone can do but be mad at the result. This is a different team with the exception of 5 hitters (including the return of Marwin Gonzales). The media, especially Max Kellerman, needs to get over the whole trashcan scandal and already proven wrong buzzer accusations. As a fan, what I hate is the fact that the Astros were made an example of when other teams and players simply got a slap on the wrist for cheating. And you can't say this was worse when Boston was fined for using Apple devices in the dugout. At the end of it all, it's Houston vs America and I think we have adopted a new slogan, "Make America Mad Again", as we continue to dominate and have people brining up the past like Cowboy fans bring up titles from before some of their players were even born.

One piece of credit I give the Astros is they owned up to it, the 2018 Red Sox didn’t do the same when it seemed they clearly did the same thing after their new coach came from the Astros. On top of all that, wasn’t it in the reports this all started with the Astros by Beltran bringing the Yankees system with him?
It’s time to let it go since almost nobody is left on the Astros from then anyway. The Yankees are the perfect example of a team who are letting the Astros live rent free in their heads instead of just worrying about themselves. Jose altuve didn't want them to rip his jersey because they ripped his the last time and he couldn't put it in a frame. He just wanted to keep the jersey and frame it

It's frustrating that the whole scandal happened. But common sense, looking at numbers, just minutes of research can actually show it wasn't the scandal that everyone made it out to be. It feels more like it's used as an excuse more than anything else. It's also funny how other teams cheated but nobody cares because they didn't have the actual talent to drive them to win.

I think part of the reason for the 2020 drop off was all the attention from the sign stealing issue was just coming to light. It had to have been a bit of a weight on their shoulders.

When the Red Sox cheat in the same way, we forget about it but when the Astros do it, it’s a national tragedy.

Agree 100%. They played honestly in 2022 and won. Their hitting was 40 points lower than 2017, but they played honestly, and deserved to win. In 2017 on the other hand, they cheated "throughout the postseason". See, MLB Report on Astros Cheating, page 3 para. 2. So 2017 is just something that should be buried. An embarrassment for this proud franchise. 2017 is something to be proud of. They weren't cheating - they hit nearly 40 points lower than the cheating 2017 team, but they played great baseball and had magnificent pitching. The probably even studied scouting reports on opposing pitchers! They didn't have to do that in 2017.

Family as team’s members are very close to each other and believe in their talents as professional. I will continue being fan. Go Astros to win WW Series 2021. Forgive and forget their hate attitudes. Continue working together.

Astros are a great team, plain and simple. Most teams with a poorly managed minor league system would be decimated with the losses of Springer, Cole, and Correa. Yet here they are in 2022 still one of the leagues top 3 teams despite losing a lot of top end talent and Gurriel not even being remotely close to his 2021 form. This year they have a ton of depth, which I primarily contribute as the main factor for this year’s success thus far.
This organization has excellent player development. A guy goes down and they just plug someone in their spot and keep winning. They draft well, make smart decisions when trading, and refuse to mortgage the future on one player.
Everyone was skeptical about them letting Correa walk. You lost Springer and Cole, surely they won’t let Correa get away. Wrong. Jeremy Peña has been a most welcomed addition for them at a fraction of the price, which allows them to hone in on key FAs and trades during the season because they aren’t bogged down with high salary players.

Let's get this right. Everyone cheats it's a high school system, I don't care if you're in construction, retail, or mlb. The astros in this case were the fall guys. They took it too far, and bam MLB came down hard on them. This said, their talent at each position is hard to match.

So then why all the hate ? Honestly people just get off having something or someone to be their target for all their pent up rage... people who know baseball know that every single team has stolen signs so it just makes it seem like all of the people booing the Astros are just ignorant AF about baseball in general.
