When this tragedy took place the Korean government had top officials including their President who were involved in this tragedy. The government tried to cover it up, Many Korean Artists, actors and singers were put on a BlackList and even arrested falsely if they were caught trying to donate or protest this disaster. BTS and their company Big Hit were not a big group back then but they donated anonymously to the families of the victims even though they didnât make much money.
This song (released Feb.13 2017 has been on the Korean Melon charts and has continued every day including up to this year.
There is another explanation (you'll need to pause because there are English, Korean, and Italian subtitles, as well as an Italian voice-over that can make it hard to follow. But it is worth the trouble) by Italian ARMY. This one focuses on the music video while the other goes deeper into the tragedy itself. A must watch.

im rereading my comment and ill clarifiy why i said "as best as possible" its because a lot of the criminals in the government have gone unpunished and are still in power today so it would be very difficult for bts to flat out say yes this about xyz.
also wanna give even more context that isnt in either explained video. bts met with the families of the victims in 2014 when this happened. we only found out in 2021 when the families spoke out as bts were getting a lot of hate for no reason they told us bts met with them the same year of the tragedy. bts debuted in 2013 they debut under a small almost bankrupt label they had no money and didnt start really making good money until 2016/2017. so there was a known secret that something was happening in the industries many were being warned not to show sympathy or meet with the victims families because of a reason and youll learn about it more in the italian army video but bts knew this and still met with the families and they donated half their yearly earnings to the families.
then they made the song am i wrong and spring day years later in 2016 and 2017. they performed am i wrong on live tv which raised many eyebrows and many korean fans got worried about them. i just wanted to clarify more but the video will explain the other revolving spring day in more detail.
I suggest you to reaction to Stephanie Soo video about Sewol tradegy. Because she explain it more detail about the case and you don't have to read. It's the best in my opinion. The Italian version you have to read a lot.
Just to push back a bit on the folks dragging on this video--this was not meant as an explanation of the tragedy but of the symbolism of the video, so it was a good job for what it intended. Yes the one by Italian Army was more about the disaster itself, and there are others, such as the one by Rotten Mango. They are indeed gut-wrenching--there's at least one ex-US Navy diver who had to stop his reaction halfway through.
Spring Day started as a song by RM lamenting the lost contact with old friends, with a verse by Suga but with a heavier context (one of his really good friends got into heavy drugs, went to prison, and went he got out not only persisted but tried to involve him--Suga wrote a whole other song about this called "Dear My Friend). However, by the time that the MV was made it had morphed into this poetical and oblique homage to the Sewol Ferry disaster in which over 200 school children were killed. All that innuendo was because the government was blacklisting artists who discussed it explicitly, though the president was finally impeached just a bit before the video dropped. Thank you for recognizing and responding to the emotional baggage the video has--some other new reactors who weren't warned have assumed that it was mourning a lost love affair, etc.. and then regretted their too-upbeat reactions.
When this happened in 2014, BTS was still part of a really broke agency, but nevertheless donated a large percentage (estimates of around 30%) of their not very large income to a fund set up for the parents of the kids.
As some other folks have mentioned, Spring Day is called the Queen by BTS fans, the ARMY, because it hasnât been off the Korean Top 100 charts since the video came out in early 2017. It rises up the charts further in every April on the anniversary of the Ferry's sinking. However, it also bounced up last December when RM, V, JK, and Jimin enlisted in the military--I think it even made it onto the Billboard charts then, because ARMY went into mourning a little bit and played it obsessively. You can't imagine how much happier we all are now that Jin's been discharged.

At the time BTS made this the company had not long broken even as they were on the verge of bankruptcy at the start of BTS journey. However they donated sbout 80,000( that respresented zlot to BTS at yhat time even if its not he millions they donate to charities now) to the families fund who were campaiging to find the truth and to help with funeral costs.

This was not a good explaination of the disaster Rotten Mangoes breaks down what happened to the Sewol and the government corruption that made everything so sickening. The over 300 passengers mostly school age on an annual school trip died it was avoidable and the rescue was deliberately impeded. So much so that it made me wonder if someone on board was meant to die. Every shot on the music video has meaning. For instance the shot of the time on the clock in the launderette was when the ferry went down. Though please font watch either the Rotten Mangoes or Italian ARMY explainations last thing at night. Or if you are not in a good head space. Anger that you cannot resolve with action can result in depression. I have seen people cry with anger at both these.
