    The bit about apologies struck home today. I woke up this morning thinking about the person I've owed an apology to for eight years now. • @1sliiver
      @1sliiver Před 3 lety

      I feel as though if you really feel the need to apologize (regardless of length of time) DO IT.
      Life is way too short even if it has been a long time since you and said individual(s) have parted ways. The caveat I would say is that some might not accept your apology or you might not get the reaction you expect at the worst which is a chance you do take.
      Even when things didn't go as expected or I received no answer or reply at all, I usually at least felt better if I felt compelled to apologize and did so. It's a great weight off your shoulders. But I can respect choosing to see outside oneself as a reason not to be intrusive in someone's life as a justification not to contact someone.
      I suppose it depends on the scenario itself. I was in relationship when I was young with a woman who really treated me like garbage and I felt the need to apologize for years for my behavior because I had the mistaken notion I had done something wrong. The reality was she was a jerk who lied and cheated on me on several occasions , and maybe I rationalized in my head post relationship that i was the one who was at fault. These days, I wouldn't even bother because I know better, but at the time I REALLY didn't.
      In another scenario, I apologized to a friend I had a falling out with in the past and despite the passage of time without communication it rekindled our friendship...and it apparently meant the world to the person I apologized to.
      Use discretion is what I'm trying to say, but don't be afraid to show humility or kindness either.

    "It shouldn't be Sophia's responsibility to educate her"
    This common refrain reminds me of Liberal idealism in that it completely ignores material reality. Do you want ignorant people to better understand minority issues, or do you just want to whine because you feel you shouldn't have to put in work to make that happen?
    It doesn't matter what things *should* be like, the fact is, if you're a minority, and an ignorant person puts in the emotional labor to try and understand your perspective, and then you turn around and bitch about your own emotional labor, they aren't going to say "oh shit, you're right, that was inconsiderate of me- my bad", they're going to think "wow, I'm putting in genuine emotional labor and this person just wants to scold me. I guess *these people* are just assholes"

      I completely agree. Even the "She/her... any food allergies or pronouns I should know about?" Is quite a considerate thing to ask, but she's still getting dunked on for saying.
      I swear so many people live in ideological feedback loops so alienated from the mainstream that lead them to being so puritanical under the guise that it's radical

    • @jemolk8945
      @jemolk8945 Před 3 lety +3

      It's just really tiring to have to advocate for yourself all the damn time. Every person who manages to learn on their own or with the help of allies is a massive load off whoever otherwise would have been explaining. This is something that's very worth understanding, and honestly if someone I was trying to explain something like this to accepts that, it would make me significantly more comfortable, to the point where I'd have a far easier time doing the explaining that it really shouldn't be my job to do. Stating what a preferable reality would look like doesn't necessarily mean denying what is actually there. Though I won't deny that some people probably misuse it, people can misuse almost anything. In fact, that's one of the major problems with the way many liberals try to engage with the world -- there is no process that guarantees good outcomes, and no procedure that cannot be misused according to the letter of it. Nuance is, as always, required.
      To the reply about the "food allergies or pronouns" question -- it's funny and cringey just because of the clunky and awkward phrasing, but heartwarming because of the obvious intent, at the same time. It both calls attention to her lack of knowledge, both of trans and nonbinary people and of the way the English language usually works, which is exactly what she doesn't want, and also makes it pretty obvious she's trying. No one would really judge her too harshly, but I certainly winced.

      @@tophergerkey I'm gay but I don't think that's funny or helpful. Ignorant people aren't going to "go away" with an attitude like that, they can become entrenched in their position and find validation in the wing that finds that sentiment completely rude and arrogant. If they're not arguing in bad faith then giving them a scripted answer is an unfortunate fact of life. LGBT people continue to be murdered in some parts of the world (the risk of letting things go) but Westerners aren't willing to chat to someone for a few seconds. That's peak individualist liberalism, particularly "joking" about getting paid.

    Your analysis of this reminds me quite a bit of Black Sails; that every character is deeply flawed but none is without redeeming qualities, and that when characters argue you're left understanding both sides. This is especially true in its later seasons once it drops its framing device of being a "story" (which it picks back up nearing the end); every character is /human/, even the people actively trying to kill the 'main' characters; the people who are probably the least complex/humanized are the redcoats+british (which I mean, not complaining), but even they are allowed nuance at times. It's almost impossible for me to analyze the show just bc there's So Much to unpack but your description of Ramy really reminded me of it!
