Construction gone wrong! Steamroller flipped over on street

  • Customer called to recover a steamroller that flipped over on the street during construction. The steamroll was on a trailer that broke off a truck, causing it to rollover.
I arrived in Hulk, my 2020 Peterbilt 50ton Century rotator, while Joe brought Big Flipper, out mighty 2019 75ton Century rotator. First step was to separate the steamroller from the trailer, which was difficult because the chains securing it were under immense amounts of pressure.
After some classic Pepe's finessing, the steamroller was free from the trailer. We uprighted the trailer and set it to the side, then focused on the steam rollover. Straps were used to protect the roof and body of the machine. Once upright, we skied it high and rotated to get the steamroller away our outriggers so the Landoll can back up underneath it.
The rotators were no longer needed at this point, so we went back to base, while Rudy delivered the steamroller to the customer's base. Overall another fun and safe rollover!

"Steamroller". Funny how a name can become so entrenched. How long has it been since there were actual steamrollers. Elvis is smiling. Good job.

@@PepesTowingService "Steamroller" is an historic term from the 1860's when steam driven machines were fitted with rollers for road making.
This machine is best described as a road roller or diesel roller, but it is a compliment to the steam era that Steamroller is so commonly applied.
Steam rollers are often seen at rallies of historic and steam operated machines.

@@PepesTowingService Same here! I use that term myself without even thinking. Similar to everyone calling any slip joint plier a Channellock, any adjustable wrench a Crescent wrench, or any locking plier a Vise Grip. The name becomes entrenched.

Pepe: that piece of equipment is called a Dynapak dual steel drum, vibratory compactor, same as an "AC roller" (AC stands for asphalt concrete) or some folks call them paving rollers. It is used to compact hot mix asphalt and / or road base materials such as Class II aggregate base (3/4" AB is most common) for roadways and related paved areas.

I’m no expert, but why didn’t they just upright the trailer with the machine still on it? Undoing those chains looked very dangerous. Good result none the less.

If it was your truck, would you reuse those chain and binders, or consider them stressed and dispose of them?

I'd scrap them and get new. just too much of a risk

That is false. There is absolutely no way to tell if they are stressed by looking at them. There are machines built to test the WLL of chains and binders. It's 3/8", not worth the money to test just buy new

G’day Josh from the Illawarra region of wintery Australia.
Do you have gawking laws there? As in traffic is not allowed to go slow just to look at the crash? Also, if I may, does traffic need to reduce any of the roads speed limit when near emergency service vehicles? For example we have to slow to 40kmh.

Every state in this country has a "slow down move over" law, which means you must slow down or move over when you see emergency road workers. It is very very very rarely enforced unfortunately.

Imagine if SoCal had "rubbernecker" laws? There wouldn't be enough paper to write all the tickets! My personal favorite...complete slowdown out in the countryside because everybody was looking at the newborn lambs out in the pasture with their mommies. Rubbernecking, apparently is a right of all California drivers.

damn lucky that didn't land on anything when it rolled initially, that would have pancaked anything it landed on.
