- Emergency Plane Landing in Signal Hill!
On April 1, 2019, we received a call to transport a plane that made an emergency landing in Signal Hill. Upon arrival, we were informed that the only way we would be allowed to transport the plane was sideways per the police department. I set the rotator in position to lift the plane, spin it, then set on our Landoll trailer for transportation to the airport while being escorted by multiple law enforcement agencies.
Experts in Assisting with Unique Situations
In order to lift the plane safely and without damaging it, our team put a 16’ endless loop around the strongest point of the plane. This happened to be just behind the wings of the aircraft. From there, our team inspected the loop, making sure it was in the right position.
A 5’8” synthetic super sling with a weight limit of 37,800 pounds was then used to lift the front of the plane from the engine rails simultaneously. Once the plane was off the ground, the team used rim sings for guide ropes to keep the plane from spinning dangerously. We then rotated the plane so it was sideways, and our Landoll driver approached the plane to get ready for transport and we slowly lowered the plane onto our Landoll.
Since the plane was situated sideways as we transported it. We were escorted by the police so that our oversized load didn’t get in the way of traffic on the streets. Once we got the airport, we essentially repeated the process it took to get the plane onto the truck, to get it off of the truck, safely completing our transportation the plane. As a private pilot I was taught emergency landings and to use any suitable area. There is also a saying among pilots: Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Any landing where the airplane will live to fly another day is a great landing. So that pilot did a great job of landing without any obvious damage. That Piper probably weighed about 3000 lbs. Still that rotator was the right vehicle for the job!
They must of had that premier rv AAA membership
Darn lucky that this turned out so well. All too often, unplanned landings result in severe damage and/or deaths. Nice lift and transport👍👍
"Cleared to land runway I-5". LOL
I mean... yeah, kinda. ATC (especially at small airports) know the highways and roads around the airport for this reason. Whatever the emergency, the plane couldn't make it back to the airport. Next best bet is a highway.
You guys were in my neighborhood and I was out of town missed the whole thing I stay a few blocks from where this plane landed on Orange Avenue right next to the old LB Cemetery, great job on the recovery and thanks for the footage god bless and stay safe guys 👍
Awesome job guys. Thanks to all involved
As a former light airplane mechanic i can honestly say you and your crew did an outstanding job. Screw the CZcams experts
Appreciate it, glad someone has common sesne.
@@PepesTowingService yes we're few and far between
Amazing. You guys really know what you're doing ! Great job. Whoever owns the plane should be happy to pay your bill AND should donate a new flag for your truck.
Thanks!
Now that was a really neat job, thanks for the great video, and glad the pilot and passengers are safe.
Good, safe job guys. I like how the derrick in the background decided to get into the act at 2:27.
GO AMERICAN OIL, GO.
That's even better than OJ and the Bronco!
I am a private pilot. Light aircraft and even large civil aircraft are designed to take flight loads and landing loads but are not good at handling point concentrations on flying surfaces and the fuselage. Looks like you did a great job in dealing with these issues.
Thanks, glad you could see it was done well.
Just when you thought your job was getting boring doing the same old thing. Nice work.
Great to see how far your production value has gone up from this video to present. Now we have helmet cams, drones & a great ongoing commentary!
I got so used to the sound of the truck watching this that I thought I was back at work recovering a stolen whatever with Carlos. Be Well All.
Thanks bud you too
Nice work PePe's towing. Now the real work begins checking the log books on the aircraft and finding why the engine stopped mid flight. also great job on landing, I'm sure the pucker factor was rather high.
If I'm not mistaken I believe it was out of fuel.
I love this. We do work like nobody else in the world, in LA! Good job
Great job guys! Those little planes love to swing around in the wind.
Yeah, they call that "weathervaning" . It can make a good pilot look like it's his first ever landing.
Its even worse if your flying a tail dragger with a swivel rear caster. A crosswind can really screw up ones day spinning that aircraft into the weeds on landing or take off. One needs specialized training for that configuration of aircraft.
Very nice video!
@@Subgunman Thanks!
I really enjoyed this video especially the escort. Well done!!!
Awesome video as always!👍

Wow! That was cool. Great Job as Always.
Thank you!
@@PepesTowingService When you got the call, did you think that it was a prank considering the day?
I'm watching your video
Work safely.
Good job. I always wondered how they got planes back to the airport if they had an emergency landing. Lucky pilot to walk away from an emergency landing.
Hope everyone was okay with the emergency landing for whatever reason they had to use the highway great job with this video I always wondered what it would look like to Haul a plane down the road lol now I want to see y'all lift a limousine I love limousines I would live in one if I had one😎🤣
Those are actually towed a lot! Nothing special to it, we just put them on our Landoll
Awesome job guys !!!
Thanks!
Gosto muito de assistir esses vídeos
Dude that was wild!! How did you figure out what your process was going to be on this job? Did the people onsite have knowledge of lifting an aircraft? Nice work brother
Been waiting for this since I saw your Instagram story!
Wait no more! Did you like it?
@@PepesTowingService was awesome, did you find pictures people took of you guys hauling it down the road
@@steverone7623 Not yet lol, I've been waiting for people to send them
Great job!
Salisbury makes a good video blocker... LOL
Good video of lifting the plane and moving it out.
As someone with experience lifting downed planes you did a pretty good job. A shipping blanket would have protected the top fuselage skin from any paint damage from the heavy hooks. And, personally, I would secure the aft sling with an additional rope tied to the tail tie down ring . This will prevent damage to the flaps in case the sling slips forward during lift operations. Also, unless the aircraft ran out of fuel, it is advisable to drain the fuel tanks before moving the aircraft. The insurance company owes your crew a free dinner.
You know your stuff, thanks. We were in a rush and in hindsight, a blanket or tarp would have been nice but our Skookum snatch blocks weigh 40lbs, it was never in any real danger although it may look bad from the video. As for the plane, the reason it landed was because it ran out of fuel so that was not necessary. Dinner would be nice but paying the bill was enough haha
Fascinating.
// Very professional.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed my video!
+Pepe's Towing Service -- You are welcome.

Crane guy and long time pilot here. Hey it still looked like an airplane when you got done, you did as well as possible on short notice. Sure a spreader bar would have been better but you got the job done, and I doubt you need to carry one for your usual work, and you got the road back open ASAP. My local FBO knows the next time they need a plane lifted to call me!
You seem to know your stuff! We actually have two spreader bars in this truck, for a lift like this it wasn't needed. I have a few videos I'm working on where we show the spreader bars though!
Heard this on afc now the video pretty awesome hook
I have flown the 'Piper Warrior' quite a few times. In aviation terms "every landing is a good one if you can walk away from it"!, good job, bet you don't get many of those?.
SKILLS. you have a great team
Nice job ! Was this your first plane recovery? ✈️✈️✈️
More Damage can happen to aircraft moving them than the landings. An A&P will have to inspect those fuselage and motor mount areas they lifted. Probably ok.
100% OK.
@@cavu22 be mad at all the agencies, not me. This was the only method they allowed it to be transported. Relax, customer was happy with the job and have since used us multiple times
Perhaps you should rename that trailer to a "Land-All' !! ;)
Haha first time I've heard that one, I'm going to use it now!
With a bit more time they could probably done the whole job with the "Land All". It has wheels, roll on roll off?
Great work so was it technically in the city of signal hill or the city of Long Beach that area is super confusing when it comes to the borders of the two cities .. there is even one or two streets that the street itself is the city of signal hill but the sidewalks and the houses are all in the city of Long Beach, heck a lot of people actually think signal hill is just a neighborhood of LB because it's surrounded on all sides by Long Beach interesting history on why it became a city
It is confusing, but this was definitely in Signal Hill.
"Pepe's towing, how can I help you?"
.... "yeah, uuhmm, I need a tow truck with one of them crane lifty thingens on them back"
"You mean a rotator, sir?"
.... "uhm yeah, if that's what it's called, you got one of those?"
"Sure sir, what type of vehicle needs to be recovered?"
.... "It's not a vehicle, it's a plane."
Pepe's Towing looks at the calendar "aah, April fools!" and hangs up

Man would I be kicking myself in the ass if I turned down that call then saw another company on the news doing it!
Other than not having equipment available, have you ever turned down a job?
Silent Epsilon that's funny lol
@@lindasherman9921 We have never had a job that we were working on that we had to turn down. There have been some incredibly difficult jobs and it may have taken longer but we always complete a job once started. The only instances where we would really turn down a job is if the customer does not agree with our price upfront.
A resume builder for sure.
PeePees' tugging does such a great job!
The pilot put that on his AAA card
I sure you guys dont get that many calls like that but just one suggestion, you should have some extension plates that slide into the stake pockets so you could of loaded it on without having to turn it
“ I want to fly like a eagle”....... good job.....
Great video and also a great job! Did your phone get broken?
Nope! Learned my lesson in the past and use a case now lol
That’s an AGERO call. First 10 miles free and 0.50 a mile after that. Lol. Good job guys.
Never a dull moment.
Boss lady was shouting instructions like she's landed on a highway before....and probably has!!!
That was interesting...you guys are pros...👍😀😎
Appreciate the compliment!
Great Job! How much did the whole thing cost, including traffic control, etc? Great crane! who makes it, German?
I’m a pilot and always wondered HOW a plane was returned to the airport for repair, after emergency landing. I’m curious why you didn’t lift the plane, move the truck and sit it straight down ?? Cool video ! 🇺🇸🛫
Now you know! For the second part, once we parked, they told us they needed it behind the white line to allow traffic through. Instead of re-positioning the trucks, I simply swung it behind me to safety.
Pepe's Towing Service Gotcha. Now it makes sense. This was a really good video, thst answered several wuestions. I always assumed the plane was relocated a short distance and mechanics removed the wings for transport. Which, if the airport was a long distance away, may be necessary I guess.
@@PepesTowingService LOL Got to love it when they wait until *after* you've set up to tell you stuff like that.
Very nice! Do you guys use headsets to communicate? Depends on the job?
100% depends on the job. Some people use them for EVERY call, even if it's a simple car in wide open space lol. Doing a lift off the side like this I don't use them since we are all in such close proximity. Our trucks are equipped with radios so not needed while driving. For over the hill recoveries or anything extreme we do use them.
Watch your back:hahah
No seriously watch your back
This happened recently here in Missouri, they just had the truck from the airport with the plane tow bar come get it and take it back to the airport.
I used to love when you had a police escort.. like being in your own parade,, lol
The plane could have been turned sideways simply by moving the front landing gear direction and manually pushing on the front of the wings. That is how we do it at the airport all the time. We do. Have a “jig” that attaches to the front wheel and then one person can roll it around.
Space Force One is safe again!
I like how every so often, at various points throughout the video, grown men in uniform whip out their phones to snap pics because 'wheeee, airplane!' lol e'rybody likes seeing airplanes, no matter how young or old.
Nice work. But guys.....that flag! Dish soap and hand washing to get the grease off would do wonders! Don't ya think. Cheers.
And maybe putting it up so it doesn't get dirty again? Put it back on the boom when you actually have a display event or parade to go to!
@@marycarricaburu3683 Correct, it is the think blue line flag.
Any landing you walk away from is a good landing.
Agreed.
... an excellent landing is where they get to use the airplane again. This was an excellent landing.
Once again i
Job well done A+ across the bored
"doesn't weigh a lot"... yea, but it probably cost more than the tow truck! (laughingly said). just fyi, cross the straps in an x under the fuselage at the wings and the plane will balance itself (the balance point is just behind the spar on any small plane).
THat Piper PA-28 N80853 only weighs in about 1200 lbs empy and the max takeoff weight is 2150 lbs.... So its lighter than your average sedan. Only difference is you can go 130 miles more on the 2 tanks compared to a car (which is about 400 miles average on a tank of gas). I can also see why they have the FD there. Avgas (LL100) is flammable. More so than Jet-A like im used to since im a fueler at MSP intl. for Delta Airlines. Info of crash: aviation-safety.net/wikibase/223659
I bet that fiery was the kid who stood right in front of the TV.
Hey...somebody stole your underlift
Nice job! what airport did you guys drive to drop it off
We took this to Long Beach airport.
Ladies and gentlemen, where approached for landing out of fuel, please tilt up your back seats stop smoking and call Pepe's towing for recovery.
Well you don't see that everyday lol
Awesome video! :-)
Do you have a video showing the entire (most) of the transportation to the airport???
Thanks! In hindsight, it would have been cool to have the helmet cam on during the transport, but I was "in the zone" and focused on the escort to make sure nothing went wrong. I just have that cool tunnel shot.
@@PepesTowingService Thanks for the prompt reply. Another option would be to just mount a camera in the truck between the two seats, like Ron Pratt does in his videos.
@@1nm1 I tried that but I'm not a fan of all the talking. No offense to Ron, his videos are great but personally I can't sit through an hour video showing every little thing, including 20 minutes in setting up and putting stuff away. In this case, that would have worked perfect. Going forward I will definitely consider it.
@@PepesTowingService I understand. I am not a "talker" myself, so I wouldn't be able to fill time either LOL
All I will say in conclusion is seeing the action even WITHOUT talking would be most entertaining for some viewers, like myself.
The "highlights" is what is typically shown in the various TV shows, etc, while the mundane, day to day actions that account for much of the work are excluded, due to their repetitive nature. I think many people that watch these sorts of videos on CZcams look for the realness of those types of videos, since it shows more closely what the work is ACTUALLY, REALLY like.
Regardless, thank you SO MUCH for the videos you do upload, I enjoy them very much!!!
@@1nm1 No problem, I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future.
Would have been easier just to have the truck it was setting on pull out once it was lifted high enough to clear it.
And faster to single line the winches. That's a light rotator, 3winches and no under reach.
@@n3glv Light? It's a 75ton rotator weighing just under 72,000lbs lol. Also, that has been addressed so many times already. We pulled in to the side to see where they wanted it. They told us where it's at is fine and to just make sure it's behind the white line. Taking an extra 60 seconds to swing it in back of me is more time than re-positioning both trucks? Give me a break.
Now that was different.
Wonder what would happen if a minor heat wind vertex sprung up🌪🛩 =💥
i got to do this 2 times in 1 day at X49 . load of bad gas and i was the only guy with a 35 feet flat bed trailer
Sounds like a bad ass day. Did they allow you to transport it regular?
Why you didn't blew the horn of Big Flipper when you were under the Tunnel?
2 things: 1) What happened to the top half of the cowling? 2) I'll be thats the ONLY time you've been followed with red and blues lit up behind you that you didn't have to pull over....
nossa que coisa complicado e transporta um aviãozinho desse.será que não existe uma maneira fácil como um helicóptero por exemplo.pensei que era só no Brasil que as coisas são atrasado mas não
#15 Thumbs Up
Iam suprised you didn't use a spreader bar
how much does it cost to get your plane towed back to the airport btw?
why didnt us just move the landol out of the way when u were unloading the plane?
In this incident, you transported the plane sideways. Why?
Aerodynamic reasons, or wing span considerations?
Neither, that was the direct orders given to me by the agencies on scene based on the route to the airport
Does AAA cover that?
Ya, for 10cents a mile LOL
Yeah I understand why there's not a wheel lift on the back of that truck is to help with the weight of the truck you have to be underweight for that truck in your state
Is that the new m100??
When the plane's on the trailer, pilot says "these runways are short, but they sure are wide"
@@djkreigline2760 thanks
@@djkreigline2760 me? i'm in an open relationship.
@@djkreigline2760 I don't give my number online.
I bet there was one hell of a bill for this one.
Great video, but your American flag should be washed or burned.
Do the wings not come off for transportation? Or would that have taken too long?
You don't get to make that call in emergency landings this way. We should up fast to clear the intersection. When you allow people to make calls like this, you don't know who you are dealing with. For example, what if their team to remove the wings was hours away? You can't leave this there that long.
Wow I see towing companies transport a helicopter but never a airplane
First time for everything lol
Why do people always have to stand in front of the camera which has been specifically set up to record the lift. Just because your a firefighter does not mean you have to stand right in front. Is he on his phone too??? Thanks for this very unusual recovery. Cheers
Believe me, it happens all the time. I edited out quite a bit of footage because people got directly in front of it blocking everything
a lot of people dont like to be filmed because it can be used to buddyfuck someone
It’s a shame those guys were standing in front of the camera
You have to use a colored edge black or white for your texts....
how many guys would it have taken to lift the airplane onto the trailer ?
How many truck do they have
the reason they had you pull sideways was because they were afraid the wings would make lift
That wouldn't be an issue when properly strapped at the speed we went. It was mainly to accommodate the route they took us on.
Ojalá que la grúa resista...😂😂
I saw that too. No under lift. Whats the reason for no under lift?
Depending on where a truck operates will say if a truck this size can actually tow something. Where I live it would be illegal for me to tow anything other than maybe a smart car behind this truck due to weight. There is a MAX weight limit, and a truck like this is usually just within that limit. Some places have exemptions on the weight limits for tow trucks, some will heavily enforce the weight limit. The combination weight isn’t the issue, the truck would be fine, it’s the axle weights, specifically the rear axle weights that are the problem.
@@sum42guy2k You summed it up perfectly.
Pepe's Towing Service I run wrecker myself in BC, and have loved doing it. We looked into it ourselves because the heavy wrecker we currently have is a 1987 international with a Holmes 750. The winches were converted to hydraulic operation from mechanical, but whoever did it left the gearing... that truck will pull anything once it plants... if it plants... (we have literally torn up some of the highways with this truck...) Sadly it is at end of life and is ready to be replaced, so we have been looking for another unit but too many just can’t tow anything. We also priced out what we would have to charge for a rotator... it came out to nearly $1000/hr to break even... around here no one would be willing to pay that.
@@sum42guy2k Man that is crazy, luckily for us we are in Los Angeles so there will never be any shortage of wrecks and recoveries. If I may suggest, have you tried looking at a used unit? There are some very decent rotators priced well enough to where you could probably break even faster at a better rate.
Emergency landing is happening quite often these days,it seems like them things are so wide to be transported on a trailer, seems like airlifted with one them cargo hellicopters and taken to the nearest airport would be the best way to go , just my thought
Do you train for unusual situations or are you just naturally talented?
There are some calls that are just impossible to train for, you never know what you are going to get. I'm fortunate enough to learn from my father who has been in the industry for almost 40 years. He's considered one of the towing legends down here.
