I freaking love the banter between the creatures don't ever stop that.
I’ll summarize the episode. Just use giant scorpion and roll 1d4 to see how many scorpions there are.
Hell hound arguing with Blue Wyrmling got me laughing, ngl
I want Giant Scorpion merch, Giant Poisonous Snake too.
Top 10 giant poisonous snake delivery methods
On god
And at number 1, a plane
I enjoy the editing in the video with the giant scorpion and the others
Your editor deserves a raise for those amazing skits!!!
I wish I watched this video 2 years ago. I had thrown a single giant scorpion at my party of 4 level 3s and I think it could've wiped them. But I realized it was much stronger than I had anticipated and started trying to go easy. I had also planned to have small scorpions join the giant one mid fight, but I canceled that plan once I saw the party get into bad shape. I was newer to DMing back then though, and now I think I would have just killed some of them with no regrets. At the time I just didn't want to kill the players so early.
I totally agree with your last sentiments. Players totally need to understand running away is a thing. Its the reason why they have Chase rules in the DMG right after the combat section lol
@@The-0ni Yeah, after the fight I regretted going easy on them because they complained about how I handled the fight. I was scared of killing any pc because I didn't want anyone to stop playing. The person that complained the most, I know for a fact would cry if I killed her character because less has done so in the past. So maybe I was somewhat right to avoid killing anyone. I am a much better DM now though and I think I would have handled everything differently if I could redo that fight.
A derro is like an insane duergar. A derro savant is simply a spellcasting derro. There is also some named derro in Out of the Abyss.
Yup, messed up by the Far Realm I think.
just rediscovered your channel, and dang I am glad I rediscovered the channel on this video.
The back and forth between the monster is really enjoyable to watch.
Top 10 best subclasses in the PHB.
YES!
Number 1: totem barbarian
1. Lore Bard
2. Divination wizard
3. Moon druid
4. Battlemaster fighter
5. Arcane Trickster Rogue
These are still competitive with later source material.
@@ADT1995 Light/Trickery Domain are both completely serviceable; not their fault that Twilight/Peace turned out to be completely broken. ;)
Valor Bard does his job, like probably Vengeance Paladin. And, of course: Hard to go wrong with Wizards, - as long as it is not Necromancy.^^
@@Badbentham I only named my top five, I haven't actually seen a valor bard in play yet, although having played a swords bard I would say that you won't be disappointed with them either. (Although strictly speaking I believe swords bard was in SCAG not the PHB). Having said that though, I don't think there is any bad bard subclass, except maybe spirits, but even then you are still a bard so still good.
I concur with both light and trickery domain still being great, and would also add tempest.
Somehow while making this list I forgot to include my all time favorite: the vengeance paladin.
I had my party face a random group of monsters controlled by an evil wizard in a sewer. Three of those monsters were hellhounds. (Party was level 5 at the time, 4 of them in total.) It literally took them like, three rounds of combat to start focusing down the dogs instead of the hit point sponge I threw at the frontline in the form of a hill giant. I'm pretty sure over half of them went down to the flames before they got the fight under control.
I swear, I can't trust them with anything.
I'm pretty sure that the flavor text of the Basilisk has text indicating that you can collect some sort of fluid from its mouth to turn anyone frozen by the its gaze back to normal. I believe its the way it eats people using its ability: Petrfies, breaks off and eats pieces of the stone victim, and as it goes down the fluid turns the stone back to flesh.
Love the editing on these videos. The scorpion really got me
I really enjoy your top 10 series
One thing that would be cool to see in this channel is for you to review homebrew items. You review custom cards in you Yu-Gi-Oh channel and I think it could be really cool considering homebrew is such an integral part of DnD. Also, for other lists, maybe top 10 artificer infusions or Top 10 subclasses (like, in general, for any class. Like, which subclass best helps your class and the boosts they give regarding your base class abilities. That would be an interesting topic if put like that)
From the darker side to this in the same hour. Great job bud
Always love the vids!
Correction on Hellhound's cone depiction:
CONE
A cone extends in a direction you choose from its point of origin. A cone's width at a given point along its length is equal to that point's distance from the point of origin. A cone's area of effect specifies its maximum length. A cone's point of origin is not included in the cone's area of effect, unless you decide otherwise.
So the party would need to REALLY squish together to all get hit at once. Still theoretically possible since a 15-ft cone hits 6-7 squares (1 in front, 3 in the back, and 1-arguably-2 in the 10ft middle), it's just harder to get everyone to clump up for the same amount of damage as shown in the video.
more like dungeons & geometrically sound area calculations
Ohhh man this is awesome
Githyanki warrior. Had one of those as the encounter of 4 lv 3 pc's a couple weeks ago, was a piece of cake. Although to be completely fair it was my bladesinger that just slaughtered it by being first in initiative and hitting each shadowblade attack I made. Damn that deals damage fast.
Keep these up. I’m ready for CR 8 please. So to be fair, I’ll take CR 10 next ;)
Derro were a species of humanoids that inhabited the Underdark. Savant: a very learned or talented person, especially one distinguished in a particular field of science or the arts.
2:45 This advice is quite nice , like obviously class stat is #1 and int tends to be the dump stat, but I generally just put the rest of the numbers anywhere now I won't
Didn't even realize there were CR3 creatures with legendary actions
I'm loving all the dialog edits!
36 = 50
that is some wild rounding
2:50 made my tabaxi drunken-master monk have negative con for the roleplay of getting drunk easily (he was going through a hefty depression in life at the time the adventure started) and whoo boy let me tell you! having the fifth monster our (zero healers, one spellcaster) party evre fought be a basilisk was no joke! :'D
Poor Giant Scorpion!
2 videos! Good work. Green Hags are CR5 in a coven, and they are really underpowered, as if only one dies, none of the hags can cast the spells anymore.
I mean yes but on the other hand that's a party-wide upcasted hold person followed by 2 lightning bolts to the face (they share spell slots but each have their own initiative). If I were the hags, I'd set up a lair that's only accessible via a long straight (5 foot wide) tunnel so that the party is sure to be in a line to fry with lightning bolt. I'd also stay invisible (With the invisible passage trait) until I was safely in position to do so.
@@SharklordZerato Yup, I tried to hold person the whole party, but the DC is so damn low that only one failed, and the damage they did broke the hag's concentration.
I had no idea Rosie Beestinger and Walnut Dankgrass were named NPCs. I only knew them from the C Team
Those random conversations between monsters are distracting but hilarious.
A green hag could also turn a player party member into an orca, giving it way more health, and leaving it stranded on land without anything to do.
You can squash a snail. But what do you do when your barbarian is suddenly completely without movement and only able to attack stuff in range?
Werewolf isn’t getting a mention? The immunity to the 3 most common damage types is insane
The giant scorpion is a mascot of this channel now
I would love to see a video about prestige classes. I used to play a Dragon Disciple with 3.5 but I haven't touched 5E
5e does not have prestige classes.
Great video, but at 10:28 that it absolutely NOT a 15-foot cone. That's a 15-foot long, 25-foot wide cone. Not super necessary to get the point across with how much damage the hellhound can output, but it's a slightly misleading image.
Having played a few characters with negative con before I will it's possible, and everyone should do it at least once in a short adventure (like 5 sessions or so) since it forces you to learn how to fight tactically and will make you be a much better player regardless of your class
But yeah I generally rank it as a very important stat for all classes.
Lol i imagine that sephek isnt happy getting hit by a fire :)
18:36 I ran the adventure this monster was from and lost my entire DnD group because one of them pulled open their copy of the adventure after their wizard died from full health and they thought it was some end of chapter boss they fight at lvl 2 or 3. To this day they argue I ran the adventure incorrectly even though they technically did kill them only after the wizard died but the druid healed over the dead body of the monster and never used fire or a torch….so the fight kept going and going till they decided to give up and quit the campaign session 1….
But what if I use True Strike against the giant scorpion?
you should also talk a little bit about the lore of the creatures as well, for the GMs that care about the flavor and not just the raw stats. Or but in the comments description what book the creatures description and stat block can be found so that people can more easily find the information. But I suppose I can just google it, find where it is and open the appropriate book.
my group fought the anchorite of talos at level 1 with only 4 out of 6 of us, and me were already injured
In mythology a scream from a rooster frees you from the petrification, if you are DM is "educated" he could allow you to free your pal with it. Maybe i get it confuses with something else but it should work in such a way.
It seems a little opinionated, but Top 10 Scariest or Halloween/Horror themed monsters
Let’s make this happen.
There is a module on dm’s guild called A Thousand Tiny Death where the boss is supposed to be à CR3 kobold, but is like really stronger than the number one on this list.
SPOILER FOR THIS MODULE
It has 16 AC thanks to a cloak of protection and unarmored defense, 42hp, and he can cast fireball 2 times per day. He also has 6 points of metamagy, so he can tweenspell his chromatic orbs at level two, and with pack tactics he can be sure to land those ones more regularly. Oh yeah and he deals 3 more damages on acid spells, but it’s just a little extra :)
I ran the fleecemane lion against four level 3s and I didn’t stand much of a chance. Especially because they were Theros heroes with the bonus starting feat/boon.
LOL at a CR3 monster having legendary actions :D
Top 10 classes based on how good they are compared to Cleric?
Top 10 strongest or weakest monsters of a single type, respective to their CR. Like top 10 weakest Undead, or top 10 strongest Elementals, or something like that.
Also the green hag coven variant isn’t Cr 3
The only way we were able to kill Sephek as a 1st level party, was by our DM allowing us to challenge him to a drinking contest. After my dwarf and he got like 3 levels of exhaustion, the rest of the party carried us to a free room in the inn, where the entire party took an opening round of attacks before combat started. Even with that, only one of our 3 PC's didnt get knocked out by this barely functioning, but horrendously op drunkard.
Top 10 strongest classes including subclasses
That’s why I saw blindsite is the best fighting style
I thought green hags also have eye bite, which can be pretty devastating, when you put one or more pc's to sleep with no save
Eye bite is only accessed through the hag being in a coven. And if a hag is in a coven it's CR get 2 added to the base CR of the hag. Therefore a green hag that can cast eyebite is effectively a CR 5 monsters.
Dwarves should only increase weight by five. They're already so thicc
I made this.
Derro is a creature type.
Oh shut you do DND content as well I’ve been watching your wow vids for years
Rotfm does not set up Sephek at lvl 1. I keep reading and hearing this online. His quest is introduced at level 1 but clearly states that the players need to go from town to town to find him. On average 3-4 towns. At that point the party should have completed 3-5 quest, as there is 1-2 quest per town, which by that modules milestone system would make them level 3-4. More than capable of a fair fight.
I can't hear Uk'otoa without whispering Uk'otoa right after it
~Uk'otoa~...
Top ten chairs\throwns?
2:10 basilisks are insanely easy to defeat. Any adventurer is wearing armor, so it must constantly believe it's surrounded by rivals. Just turning on a light & seeing the basilisk would usually imply it sees itself like 10-20 times, meaning it would have to make saving throws just like the players (based on how the thing is worded). The only time it wouldn't work is if your entire group is spellcasters / monks (i.e., no medium or heavy armor). Then again, even a tinderbox could cast a reflection.
I think this is fair, because in real lore, you can defeat this type of creature by using a mirror yourself in order to see the foe. This does not work for dnd basilisk, because it doesn't matter whether you see the basilisk directly or not (I would even rule you can get petrified through something like arcane eye or scrying). Since this massive weakness has been removed, I think the "self-killing" weakness is fair.
In DnD lore you cannot look at its gaze through a mirror. Because the lore states "It has been noted that the better the eyesight of the victim, the longer the effective range of the basilisk's gaze, and multiple reports claim that the casters of arcane eye spells, the users of crystal balls, and the wearers of eyes of the eagle have all fallen victim to petrification upon viewing basilisks over great distances." And even though the statblock says "If the basilisk sees its reflection within 30 feet of it in bright light, it mistakes itself for a rival and targets itself with its gaze." I would rule that the reflection needs to be big enough to confuse the Basilisk and not just a distorted reflection in a shiny armour. Because the lore also states that "Basilisks instinctively avoided looking directly at others of their kind, but were able to recognize them using hearing and a sense of smell that was capable of differentiating between individual basilisks."
Honestly what adventurer describes polishing their armor to be so reflective you can use it as a mirror? Even then what happens when they hit something or are standing near a creature that just sprayed blood on them in the middle of the fight? Are they gonna stop and spend an hour after every fight to polish and clean their gear of mud and blood incase a basilisk or Medusa is around the corner? Their hits a point where the solutions go into the realm of ridiculous and I would personally feel cheated if I just insta-killed a boss monster like a medusa or basilisk by walking around a corner wearing my armor….
The martial artist can easily stun lock a player or maybe even 2 . Definitely stronger then anyone on this list if they have allies to soak some damage or separate someone.
You don't have the intellect devourer in the list? that one has an instakill ability that can even kill high level party members.
You're pretty much never going to encounter a dragon wyrmling as a party of level 3-4 or even 5+ characters...
You are not taking into account Hit bonus and save DC. It can change damage output drammatically.
+6 hit bonus from Lion gives him like +20% damage over scorpio in raw attacks^
if we assume that +4 hit of scorpio will going to hit the player 50% of the time (like player with 15AC) then the lion with it's +6 will hit 60% of the time (roll 9-20 versus same player).
It means that from 20 attacks scorpio will hit 10 attacks and lion will hit 12 attacks, that is 20% more then scorpio.
And then scorpio have not only to hit the target, but allso target have to fail saving throw.
So let's have a dummy player with 15AC and +3 con save (pretty average on lvl 3).
Scorpio do 6 x 0.5(claw) + 6 x 0.5 (claw) + 7 x 0.5 (sting) = 3 + 3 + 3.5 = 9.5 points of physical damage.
And then if he hit with a sting (allready only 50%) the target have to fail save to get full 22 damage. With +3 con player success 60% time. So we have 22 (poison) x 0.5(hit change) x (0.4 (con failed) + 0.6(con success) x 0.5 (damage halved)) = 22 x 0.5 x 0.7 = 7.7 poison damage.
Scorpio do 9.5 physical + 7.7 posion damage per round on our dummy player, or (if player is not a dwarf) a 17.2 damage per round.
Lion do 8 x 0.6 (bite) + 7 x 0.6 (claw) = 4.8 + 4.2 = 9 physical damage with his regular two attacks.
Then lion can legendary-claw for another tree times that deals 4.2 x 3 = 12.6 damage
So we have 21.6 damage from Lion over 17.2 damage from scorpio. And this even without taking in to account a probability of pounch, that can end in target being prone, raising lion hit chance to wooping 84% and his total damage to 30.24.
Why do you use examples of 5 player parties for AoE when CR rating is balanced around 4?
But HellHound have intelligence of 6, wouldnt that be unfair by GM to make a hellHound be "smart" and position himself for perfect FireBreath cone with such low intelligence? Isn't it a wild animal with survival instinct that doesn't think of such Chess Strategies?
Intelligence of 6 wouldn't make them a wild animal. In 5e "Wild animal with survival instinct" level intelligence is typically denoted by an int of 3 or lower. That's why spells like animal friendship and beast bond specifically have that range. Additionally, a DM could just give them a trainer who taught them how to fight smart
Given the cutoff for being unable to communicate with creatures is INT 3-4 I don’t think so, INT 6 makes them quite smart as a beast.
I think tactics like that fall more on wisdom side. And since they have a 13wis, i wouldn’t call it unfair
Where are these npcs coming from?
Its pronounced Poor-Ten-She-A. Just fyi
