I first heard 'Sarie Marais' sung in Afrikaans by Helmut Lotti.
This english language version is simply beautiful.
The Afrikaans pronunciation in the version by Helmut is terrible
There is no good recording of the entire song in Afrikaans that I know of. The one by Chris Blignaut is quite good, but he uses an alternative first verse. Helmut Lotti, Ivan Rebroff, Jim Reeves and some others have tried to do it in Afrikaans, but their pronunciation never sounds like the real thing (I'm Dutch by the way, so I can understand some Afrikaans but I couldn't do it correctly either). This her version is okay but I prefer to hear the song in Afrikaans.
Jim Reeves did this in 1959 on his African Album "JIJ IS MIJ LIEFLING"

While I agree with the ugh for what they became. This is the lament against a much more evil regime that killed enslaved many 100 times more indigenous people and people of colour than the boers ever did. The evil murderous cancerous destructive British empire of queen Victoria. They sowed the roots of the boers fanaticism. All in the name of making money and increasing capital. The Dutch east India company did much more murder, drug peddling, land forfeiture than anything the boers ever did.
