Royal Marines Commandos March - Sarie Marais

- The Royal Marines (RM) are the marine corps and amphibious infantry of the United Kingdom.
"Sarie Marais" was adopted in 1953 as the offical march of the Royal Marines Commandos and is played after the Regimental March on ceremonial occasions.
Performed by The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals.
It was adopted as Sarie Marais by RM Commandos in recognition of the outstanding qualities of the Afrikaner Commandos fighting the British during the 2nd Boer War, in particular at the Battle of Magerstfontein under the command of Veggeneraal 'Koos' De la Rey.
Die leeu van die Wes Traansvaal
As an ex-South African hearing Sarias Marais fills me with nostalgia.
Irish 1916 fighter McBride fought with the Boers.Facing the British firing squad he refused the blindfold saying that he had faced many British rifles. I think the Boers would have honoured him.
Can one cease to be from your birth nation? 😂
@@empire-classfirenationbatt2691 The british can force you to
Out of all the atrocities of the second Anglo Boer War, forgiveness. Most Afrikaners today love the British - without them, God knows where we might be today. As our country's ties with the East grows stronger, we miss a British presence even more.
Forgiven maybe, but never forgotten are the atrocities of the British committed during this war against the Afrikaner people. The concentration camps where thousands of women and children were left to starve to death, the burning of their farm houses and crops and the theft of their two independent republics, all in name for the greater glory of the Queen/King. In reality it was pure greed that drove the British to do this for the enrichment of a few. A shameful time of British history.
How right you are@@andriesvandeloo5166
My fabulous father I law was a royal commando - 45.commando - Still so proud of him to this day
Gordon Smith, may you rest in peace. Job done xx
I worked with the Marines when I was in the Merchant navy during the Falklands War. Great lads and some of the funniest men I have ever met. They get the job done, no matter what or where it is.
This always will remind me of my time at CTCRM, Lympstone 1980 , 141 TROOP.
141, that was my troop. steve.d13@btinternet.com
I was in OCS/MCDEC Quantico in 1982. Our director of PT was a Royal Marine color sergeant. A ball busting SOB, as much of a stand up individual as any of the USMC staff NCOs who trained us, and a man I would definately want alongside me in any firefight. Nothing but respect- and a lot of it- for the Royal Marines from yours truly.
Afrikaans, my language. Thanks to the British, this Boer is proud of you!
Sorry, no. I can speak some German and learn Latin. That's all! But you are welcome to work something out. Greatly appreciated!
Because of I can see the new generation learned from their forefather's mistakes.
Meaning?
Thank's for the compliment! I trust you are one of them too! The secret in life is to first forgive yourself before you can forgive others. Something the world has yet to learn. Cheers!
Johan Beukes why thank you sir proud to have seen the royal marines band then but not the commandos unfortunetly

Overheard in a Pompey pub once several marines, RM and USMC talking and taking the p*** out of each other; A USMC asked what the RM meant and didn't seem impressed when told Real Marines. Then the glasses started to fly!
BUT, RM or USMC I'm glad you're on our side.
Englands finest. Wonderful young men who signed a pledge to protect all british subjects up to & including the possibility of giving up their lives. Simper Fidelis brothers.
The lowbrass part at 1:48, never heard that sounds great!!
Onse mense het hulle merk gemaak in die wêreld se geskiedenis. Die Franse vreemdelegioen marsjeer ook op die musiek. Saluut!

Superb collection; kept my feet going throughout! Many thanks.
Very good musical arrangement of Sarie Marais. Sounds great as a march.
Wow, interesting..........this is one of our folks songs here in South Africa....... nice...:)
@unclemikedoyle From a future Sapper and citizen of the UK, Thank you Sargent.
Once a Royal Marine Always a Royal Marine
First time I heard Sarie Marais it was sung by my cousin Donald Skinnider(who had a great voice) in Scotland. My cousin Alex Lochhead sang it in Africaans & he knew another version as well.
Beautiful. I am so happy, when I hear this March!!!!!! Thank you and a lot of greats from Belgium.
Feels great to know you have the best trained army in the world protecting your country! proud to be british :)
I really do not know of any protection that they offer us.
You're a bit of a fool then, without a military we'd be more vulnerable to an invasion and there'd be no one to stop it, it's because of the actions of soldiers like these that we aren't speaking a foreign language now just remember that.
wk2k11 How does the old saying go? "If you can read this thank a teacher.. Because it's in English, thank a soldier". (And Sailor, Airman and Marine)
Yes indeed. Just one thing, Royal Marines are Royal Navy not Army.
+Ian Maddock Soldiers of the sea.
That tune is “ There’s a hundred thousand bastards in the old Transvaaal and fug all in Trigamalee”
Sarie Marais het n eier gelee
This is an excellent tribute of respect, if you managed to given an enemy such a historic spanking that they take your march in remembrance. 1899-1902 we were enemies, 1914-1918 some of us rebelled against fighting in the Great War, 1939-1945 we were brothers in arms giving absolute hell to the krauts.
Pretty dirty tactics though. Whilst the Boer men were on the fighting front British soldiers burnt down their farming stock andproperties (the so-called scorched earth policy), captured the boer women and children and put them in concentration camps where about 28000 (22000 children) died. 10% of the total Boer population died in concentration camps. It was terrible.
@@nic0072 I know, my great great grandmother was in one of those camps.
For two years we gave the most powerful empire in history so much grief that they had to invent an atrocity so hellish the NAZIs ebraced it. Not bad for some Old Testament, ox wagon driving farmers.
I've been reading the earlier comments and I must say I'm ashamed of you people. Comparing two military alliances? Are you serious? I'm American, and I completely support USMC more than RM but I don't go on the Internet talking trash about them. Yes, the RM have a longer training period, but that doesn't make them any better or any worse. Both nations train their troops differently, and both aid each other in times of crisis. The important thing is that both Of these troops are allies.....
Safe Travels comrades. Combat Marine Nam '73. Roll on...
The irony of this is that in many European countries this tune is the hallmark of anti-British sentiment. It is the lament of a South-African, presumably Boer, man who has had to leave his beloved wife Sarie.
The royal Marines commando are the best fighting force in the world

N'inquiet pas leos - I have exactly the same sympathy for the REP. You have great marches too. And nobody said the French are cowards. With great respects.
Curious, a military music ! I have been singing that in a french choral movement : A Coeur Joie : O Sari Marès
cheerfulness through adversity
A great piece of music befitting a great regiment
I'm british and proud and glad we have the yanks as allies stop slag gin each off
Funny, this song was actualy an anti british song about a boer who misses his girl in the second boer war
Yankee Doodle was originally a British song that the American colonists adapted.
did they, i did not know that but makes sense.
Military marching songs skipped borders ofthen during 17th and 18th c. warfare
Also from the fact that most armies on their way to battle where usualy coalition troops ( Brits, Dutch Danes, Prussians and Hannoverians)
When fighting the fucking french that is
+Jeroen Wubbels I know, the irony in that...
+jtrrs0 That's not entirely true, the song was sung by British military officers to mock the disheveled, disorganized colonial British America. So the song was already sung 30/40 years before the US would exist. So technically it was adapted and sung by the British themself in British America, which would later become the US.
@tinmiss..ya sure as hell got that right...this guy is motivated..I'll keep my comments about the Qween to myself also..
The bit about putting-on women's clothing, and hanging around in bars, is very apt for the RMs
What a great tune to borrow from a brave 'ou' enemy.
@5h3llf15h
people count for us...since we can only count to 28...the number of rounds that go into a magazine and 6 the number of magazines we carry.
1,200 KIA + another 1,500 POWs.
Body counts tell the rate at which they are fighting back and at which you are fighting. Stuff that needs to be fixed.
no hard feelings here
Most of the wars I listed happened WHILE America was a country in ascent towards becoming a global power.
The US averages 1 lost war per century. The UK about 10 wars/conflicts.

Great Video
@USMarineRifleman0311 - remember 41 independent cdo RM helped you boys get out at Chosin- they were awarded a Presidential Unit Citation (same as the 1st Marine Div) You've heard of Force Dysdale?
These men are possibly from 42 commando parading through the city of Plymouth.
Sarie Marais is a traditional Afrikaner (Boer) war time song, I wonder if this was adopted by the Royal Marines because of the Anglo-Boer War? Would be interesting to know....
+Rudolf de Beer Maybe, I know it use to be Baden Powell, who fought during Anglo-Boer War, favorite song.
+Rudolf de Beer I tought The Royal Marines adopted the song out of respect for the boers and their fierceful and brave resistance the boers gave them.
The origin of the tune is American, but it became more popular in South Africa. The British connection is probably because of the war.
Here is the original American song - amazing. www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk/whalsay/2014/12/09/sweet-ellie-rhee/
It is not unusual for soldiers and sailors to adopt 'enemy' songs, e.g the haunting German song Lili Marlene became a favourite among British soldiers fighting the Afrika Korps in N Africa and in the excellent German film 'Das Boot' the U Boat commander switched off Berlin Radio and played Tipperary which his entire crew sang whole heartedly (in English)
Brilliant!

This song was adopted by the Afrikaners and was also known as "Carry me back to Tennessee". The claim is that this song was sung by Americans working in the Transvaal gold mines, and heard there by Afrikaans journalist and poet Jacobus Petrus Toerien, who re-wrote the song in Afrikaans, substituting the name of Ellie Rhee with that of his own beloved Sarie Maré (Susara Margaretha Maré).
Very unlikely, the foreign miners were treated with extreme xenophobia at this time, it's hard to believe that an afrikaans poet would be crawling around in near-illegal mines just to find music he adored enough to recreate into Sarie Mare.
Not sure were it originated by the mines only came into being after the boer war, it was actually the discovery of gold that led to the British invasion
A number of South Africans were seconded to 42 Commando in WW2.
Semper Fidelis, my cousins!

fmr Sgt., USMC
@andyrmbull Plenty of us served before you, son.
Keep up the good work.
This non-Corps band makes a good effort at the tune but as a constructive suggestion on the percussion side I'd suggest adding cymbals,as the RM use, to bring off these distinctive flourishes at the end of the key phrases.
the US military is based off the Prussian system. Look up Baron von Steuben.
Our USMC is the country's premier fighting force. We guard the president and get the hottest areas of operations. We have more battle honors than our own navy.
Remember Kasserine Pass - arsehole
All this talk about Army detachments serving on Naval ships as "Marines" and Naval crowns on Army cap badges ??? WTF ?
The Royal Marines were formed in 1664. They were originally known as The Duke Of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot and these "Marines" were recruited and press-ganged from local bands and gangs of men ashore to serve on board Naval Ships to act as a barrier between the Naval Officers and their Sailors, and to fight when put ashore in foreign lands. The final "merger" was between the Royal Marines Light Infantry and the Royal Marines Artillery, creating "The Royal Marines" ........ During the second world war, the UK had Army Commandos and Navy Commandos and RM Commandos. After WW2, the Royal Marines were tasked with creating a single Commando Brigade.
SuperNutkin
SuperNutkin True. What many of us pongoes don't realize is that at one time the Duke of Marlborough commanded them. Marines don't realize that they took precedence after the Royal Berkshires (49th). A number of line regiments served as marines and commemorate this by drinking the Royal toast seated in memory of the low decks. Recommend Douglas Reeman's books on the RMLI in the 80's.
+SuperNutkin damn right. And the tradition of the Marine orderly on the bridge was a carryover from the Marines keeping undisciplined trashy sailors off the officer's backs! Marines be the enforcers for tehy Navy.
Les Peate Nowadays, the Royal Marines Band and the Royal Marines are at the FRONT of any March Past of British Army, RAF and RN personnel, due to the Royal Marines being TOTALLY under the umbrella of the Royal Navy during the last 10 years or so (The RN being the SENIOR service) ............. Incidentally, the Royal Marines first came under the banner of the Royal Navy in the 1700's
SuperNutkin
And in the US, when a senior government official is buried, a Marine always takes the right front pallbearers position, the position of honor. Plus, of course, the only troops under the president's direct control is/are the Marine band, the "President's Own."
The RGJ wore a naval crown on their badge as a reward for their efforts as sharpshooters under Nelson's command during the battle of Copenhagen. The Rifle Brigade was the first to be awarded this.
+Joe Waldron
US Army Special Forces lined the route for Kennedy's coffin in the cemetary, and a special guard of honour was formed from Irish Army officer cadets.

@devv1989
The USMs that took Sangin were all light non mechanized infantry, 3/5, 3/7 and 2/9 battalions all worked there at one time or another (never at one time) loosing 30 KIA and 80 wounded fixing the mistakes in strategy the RMCs made over the previous where they lost around 105 KIA (+5x that amount wounded)
It worked, instead of hiding behind little FOBs, USMs actually went out on long range patrols and pushed the enemy onto the offensive, that wasnt the case with RMs

A battalion of US Marines stopped the advance of the Japanese navy on one island and youre talking about the Argentinians for fucks sake. They havent had combat experience in centuries.
Its been over a year since the USMs took over Sangin as well, same story there. Our strategy prevailed.
to johnny rebel. what do you think RM stands for? Real Marines!
Do correct me if i am wrong but ellie rhee comes from an english folk song called foggy dew. Interesting history! Why not they just call it foggy dew?
Royal Marines...to your duties! This song is played when they pass out right?
@liverpoolparkour08 YOU ARE CORRECT
@iamiSniipezxX
the USMC is doing all the fighting today. If it hadnt been for the USMC in Al Anbar , OIF wouldve been a disaster for the US. All British troops in the Afghan have taken a seat back since Op Khanjar and the Battle of Marjah and the arrival of II MEF.
This is no longer your sector let alone war. The USMC is at war, your little contingent is doing nothing in N. Helmand behind US Marine lines.
I doubt whether The RM adopted this as it was the Boer rallying song from South Africa and the Marines saw action against them ????
My great-grandfather will turn in his grave if he saw this video.

Ek hoop om haar weer te sien....
Very similar to "Gdy Naród do Boju"
Several on here have said that this song comes from South Africa. The "Sarie Marais" version was a Boer song about the Boer War of 1899. But the tune was originally called "Ellie Rhee" and it comes from the Confederate States of America.
Can the sheetmusic (full score in this arrangement) be downloaded somewhere?
@liverpoolparkour08 YOU ARE CORRECT THE GREEN BERETS
It’s also a French song. Go listening, it’s better
@5h3llf15h
We dont do much? We took Fallujah twice, we pacified Al Anbar and the NW Iraq(the sunny death triangle) in less than 4yrs and now we've turned our attention to Helmand.
In Fallujah we killed 1,200 insurgents while loosing 49 KIA.
All the while the british could only give up basrah and create a quagmire in helmand. We deserve every rating we get. From Chosin to Khe Sahn to Fallujah.

Wow people are really losing their shit on here, arguing about which Marines are better than others and bragging about this military or that military, at the end of the day, you can’t compare a Royal Marines Commando brigade with support which numbers about 7000 strong to a USMC which is over 180000 strong with more aircraft than the RAF and that used to have more tanks than the British Army.
They are very different organizations designed for very different tasks. The only thing they have in common is the name Marines and you should remember they have a close relationship and are close Allies. Enough of the disrespectful comments on how many battles certain militaries have lost or how they performed.
Here are the Royal Marines massed bands playing National Emblem as a healing gesture for all the crappy comments on here, look at the comments from some Americans very flattering.

thats weird because royal marines surrendered to the argentines without putting up a fight, and then once again to the iranians
i think he would surrender to you
They did not "Surrender" they "Ceased Fire" and laid down their arms to avoid a futile loss of life. Only to return to kick the overwhelming force of Argentinians out of the Falklands. Our usual tricky way of dealing with an enemy. So watch out and never trust us or turn your back on us.

Hallo! It would be quite an idea to make a recording of the three songs which share the same melody. The refrain in Afrikaans says "O bring me back to the Old Transvaal, there where my Sarie dwells/Down by the maize stalks (Americans: read "Corn" :)), there dwells my Sarie Marais" Feels funny translating it into English, though. Great tune and lovely song!
