  • For years, MoFi inner record sleeves have set the industry standard for "archival. quality" record protection when storing your vinyl records.
    Could the relatively new Vinyl Storage Solutions Rice Paper Inner Record Sleeves really be better?
    We compare the Vinyl Storage Solutions (VSS) inner sleeves to the many MoFi copies on the market. But... this one is different, being available in thicker 2mil or 3mil alternatives to the standard (rather thin) 1mil MoFo sleeves.

    I've been buying inner and outer sleeves from VSS for awhile and I'm very happy with them. I've been using 2 mil inner sleeves and think they are better than Mofi. What I really like about VSS is the various options they have, multiple solutions for your vinyl storage needs. It is also nice to support fellow Canadians.

      Great stuff. Yes, they do have some great options (flap, no flap, tape, no tape, different sizes, ect ect). Glad you like them too :) happy spinning! 🎶🎵

    VSS inner sleeves are pricey but they are by FAR my favorite, absolutely worth it and I love how flat and smooth the 3mil are - every other inner is too thin and wrinkly, presentation of the VSS sleeves is just so dang nice. I go with a different, cheaper brand for the outers though, that kind of balances out the cost.

    I live in the US and I have delayed from buying from VSS because of the high shipping price. Im waiting for a good promotion to buy for the first time.

    I have been using this type of inner sleeve for years and years, got told about them what must be 30 years ago, my stock of MoFi inner sleeves is about to run out so I am on the look out for some new ones, do I stick with what I know or do I twist and go for something different? Might have a look at VSS as I have some of their outers and they're pretty good.

      Nice! Thanks for your comment. Let me know what you think if you do try them :) I've got lots of MoFi still in my collection, I won't rush to throw out the good ones as that feels wasteful, but I might be phasing them out for these over time. At least for any new records I buy/vintage ones I clean. Happy spinning!

    Does that cause any fit problems with outer sleeves? I have some that were a bit tight with the mofi and I wasn’t sure if that would worse or not

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  Před 11 měsíci

      The ones I have seem to fit fine. Not had many cases where the MoFi/VSS ones don't fit, but there are always exceptions I suppose.

    One of your compatriots on CZcams, The Audiophile Man, did a lengthy comparison of inner sleeves recently, including testing them to destruction. His key findings were, there was little to choose between them, so buy whichever floats your boat and secondly NONE of them had rice paper inside, they were all just regular paper. This include MoFi, who don’t claim it is rice paper any more. Sound familiar?
    There is an alternative to all these, supplied in the UK by Russ Andrews, and that is the MA Recordings, Japanese fibre sleeves. Naturally anti-static and breathable it’s a unique take on storage. I’m going to try them when my current batch runs out.

      Cool. Sounds like a good test. Yes, they’re all very similar but I like the thicker versions VSS do.
      They say it’s similar to rice paper, I believe. Which makes sense.
      Let me know how they new sleeves work out for you :) 🎶🎧

    I've got some of their 2mil and 3mil sleeves via their UK stockist. I agree that the 3mil feel more premium but there's quite a big price difference between the 2mil and 3mil packs. I'm not convinced that the quality difference is worth the price difference.

      A better deal in the US unfortunately

      Which stockist in the U.K did you purchase these from as I can’t find anyone selling these 3mm inners anywhere?

  • @victorn8566

    How important is it to get sleeves that are breathable? I assume having holes.

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  Před měsícem

      It’s more important to ensure the records are not wet (post cleaning), when returning to the sleeve. However, if humidity is a concern, I believe Vinyl Storage Solutions make small squares you can insert into collectible record sleeves that will absorb any potential moisture

  • @sbatty65227
    @sbatty65227 Před 11 měsíci +1

    I've used MoFi and find them to be overpriced tat. I generally replace any inners with ones purchased from MCRU. The 3mm VSS do look a worth while buy though.

    I always thought the MoFi sleeves were rubbish - too thin and overpriced.

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  Před 4 měsíci

      These 3mil ones do make the MoFi ones feel cheap and thin

    So, this feels like a Paid Promotion to me. If so, you should add the tag to the video.
    I have used the MoFi at first but yes the price is too high if have a big(ger) collection.
    I now use sleeves (outer and inner) from Music Record Shop. All made in the USA. I don't think they are distributed in UK/Europe, but maybe it's worth asking them.
    For the Inner, I use their 4mil polyethylene sleeves. When I bought them, I think there was a promotion or something but I got 1000 (split into pack of 50s) for $130. Really can't beat that price. I think now there are around $190
    For outer, I use their 3mil polyethylene sleeves (now they have a 4mil available as well), those are great I can fit a triple record album inside (and each record in its own inner sleeve. It is a bit tight but it fits.
    Too bad, they don't have gatefold sleeves but they do have 7" and 10" outer sleeves. I asked them to do inner sleeves for 10" they told me they will think about it.
    They are probably not the best but they work well for me and I prefer the all clear sleeve as it allows me to see the back of the records sleeve (well partially when the record is stored but fully when it's out) whereas with the MoFi and the like you need to fully take the inner sleeve out to check the record back cover. Details I know but I prefer it that way.

      Hey! Thanks for watching. No, VSS don’t pay me to make these videos, but if some chooses to buy through my code, I earn a small commission that helps keep the lights on if you know what I mean.
      The sleeves you’re using sound great too. Got a link? Happy spinning 🎶👍
