      Tova and Mathias, I love the Fäbod description. The most significant part that impresses me is that these settlements were created for the purpose of saving the fodder (animal feed) in the valleys for hay for winter PLUS the forests in those days would have been much cooler and pleasant....also probably an exciting experience for the mostly women and children every year. These reasons add so much to the experience.
      Btw (by the way) my DNA includes 9% Scandinavian, most likely because my mother’s Rivis* family is on the East Coast of North Yorkshire (Kirkbymoorside / Kirkemuirsid / church on the moor side) were where the Vikings arrived back in the 7th (?) Century. The lovely city of York was called Yorvik.You never know, we could be related !!!
      * Our name goes back at least to the 12th Century when the Cistercian Monks built beautiful Abbeys all over England,. Rivis stems from Rievaulx (French, Valley of the Rye). All the abbeys were destroyed in the 16th Century under the angry English King Henry VIII because the Catholic Pope would not grant him a divorce so he could marry again and have a son to follow him.

    Tova, gardening is my department on the homestead, so I have a few tips for you. Your carrots will be sweeter after some frost. Tomatoes and peppers are tricky since you're so far North. They need hot weather, 70°F plus for a few weeks to set fruit. You could try planting earlier inside and finding a way to heat the greenhouse a little longer. A black barrel full of water and black fabric on floor of greenhouse can help keep the temperature higher. I fermented carrots for the first time this year and am looking forward to eating them this winter. Fermenting is so much easier than canning. I hope your harvest was plentiful and educational this year! You two have the meat raising down, and that's what my husband and I are trying to learn next. There's always next year!

      I do pre-plant everything early in the spring and keep them inside until june, but i don't seem to have the green fingers for it :) Fermented carrots are so good, i also like to ferment parsnips, really good! But as you say, its always a next year :D /Tova

      @@Talasbuan I think finding a way to heat the greenhouse would bring you the results you are after. I was in Iceland and saw a whole tomato farm production but they heath the greenhouses. As for carrots, my grandma planted the same type every year and I hated it :) there are so many varieties and gardening is like baking - the best results come out of experimenting. Thank you so much for making these videos, they are an oasis of calm in my busy days.

      You are doing very well with your vegetables, cause of the climate it isn't easy going. For the next season, maybe this idea could help you with your green house: I'm working at the city farm vienna and there is a method, we call "warm feet bed" based on an old method of our grandmothers who where using horse manure, but it works also with other organic material and the chicken manure, too.. So you dig out about 30 cm and there you put in the manure of your chicken, sheep, the deep litter material, some old hay, straw, and some green material, also the rest of vegetables, coffee....like setting up a compost, about up to one meter high, it depends on the material you have. Higher means more effect. (look at Cherles Dowding's channel, if you need more information) This you start at March and put on some water on your hill. Then you wait and even in winter your hill starts to work, and gets warm inside. If you put a stick inside, you can proof the temperature. There after four weeks you place the tomatoes and chilis on the ground to this hill. They will grow faster, because of the warm microclimate. If it's too cold you can also use a fleece.The effect of your warm hill will help the plants getting through the cold spring, and by the way, you have very good soil after that.       I’m new to your vlog. Love all your videos. I live in northern Alberta Canada and our growing season is short. I have the same issues with tomatoes. When frost threatens my plants, I pick all the tomatoes and place them in a dark cupboard, or covered in a cardboard box and they will ripen on their own. They still taste great.

    Ok when I was younger living in mid-Michigan on a farm, we had a very small room called a "vestibule." This may be what you are thinking of. It had a locked door to the outside and within we put shoes and coats and a locked door to the inside of the house. I really hope that is the word you are looking for.

    In the South, we treasure fried green tomatoes, breaded by dipping the slices in corn meal, then fried in oil in an iron skillet. Thank you for the most peaceful homesteadimg series I have found!

    That snippet about sentence structure made me smile. It had me thinking about the best way to say it LOL. I probably would've flipped it around and put the "for awhile now" at the end. Too cute. I love your videos SO MUCH.

      The French have a saying: "The wit of the stairs..." (When you realize what you should have said after you've left the room.)
      I'm forever coming up with my best comments going down the stairs. Writing is better for me.

    Today is June 12, 2020. My name is Phil and I discovered your blog only recently; however, I was "hooked" after watching the first two episodes. You are an amazing young couple. There are not many young people today who are willing or even interested in living as you do. I have watched only the first 24 vlogs, but I plan to continue to watch as many as you film. I especially enjoy the winter episodes because I have a second home in northern Vermont, near the Canadian border, and winter is my favorite time to be there. It is off the grid and I must carry my water supply as you do, but it is my favorite place to be when the snow is deep! I do all of the carpentry, etc., myself, so I work when I am there. Cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood occupies most of my time. I am sure you can relate to that. Until next time, be well!

      This has now changed and I hope it is valuable to them. I let as many as I can play through. I skip the long long ones, for the most part. If their is a long long one at the end, I let it play, hit the mute button and read all the great comments. If I'm interested in the product, I click the "Show More" button which creates another tab that I can go back to later. If I want to buy something and know that I've seen ads for it on one of my favorite channels, I watch for the ad to pop up again and make the purchase through it. All these things boost the monetization of the ads to the channel.

    Like your vlogs, haven't watched them all but will as we have time this winter. We are located in Montana, USA. Carrots will be sweeter if left in ground for a few frosts. We always overwinter our parsnips and harvest in the Spring, we simply mulch them with old hay or straw. So glad we found your channel, we enjoy watching you both and learning new things with you. We've been on our small farm for a little over 17 yrs now and we're still learning. Can't wait to see your house closed in and the time you can move into it. Thank you for struggling through the English language and for coming back to vlog. Many blessings to you both and your farm.

      Ah, so maybe i will leave them a bit longer next season, let them freeze a bit :) Thanks for the tip! I have a friend who visited Montana and had a horseback experience, that sounded so fun, a real adventure. Yeah I guess you never will be fully learned on a farm, always new things to encounter, its quite exciting don't you think?! :D

    I've heard you struggle with this word several times. I believe the word you're looking for really IS mudroom. In America, a mudroom is the first room you come into as you enter the house. It's designed as a place you can remove your shoes and hang up your coats (so as to not track the dirt and mud into your home). :) I stumbled upon your channel a few weeks ago, and have started from the beginning and have been working my way through your vlog. I am so impressed with all you have accomplished. I really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability and REALNESS. Life is sometimes hard. You acknowledge it with grace and deal with it the best you can. Life is a journey, taken one day ... one STEP ... at a time. You have made such tremendous progress in your endeavors!     O.k. I just became a patreon. I swore to myself I would NEVER become a patreon for any one. Mostly for a selfish reason, as we too had to work really hard to carve out a space to have a homestead. We didn't have access to patreon or social media then. We did it the hard way...you 2 are already doing it way harder than we ever had to do it.     The house is really coming along. So beautifully done and no shoveling snow. Yay! My sister-in-law's family comes from Finland. They have built authentic Finnish saunas that I have been in. That would be at the top of my wish list living off grid.
    Your Patreon is very well written. I don't know if I told you this but I post your videos on my facebook page for Everyone on facebook to see. I don't restrict it to just Friends. I also post comments on other social media to draw attention to your channel.
    Hopefully you are tagging "Off-grid", and all the other buzz words for everything you do on the farm and all the animals so your videos will get recommended to people with those interests. Most videos get 10% of viewers hitting the Thumbs Up button. You are well over 20%.
    You can also call the local news station and have them do a feature on you. Ask them if you can mention your channel or wear a shirt with Talasbuan on it.
    There is no doubt you will achieve your dreams and not have to work double jobs. This will happen. People ask me how I can be so sure. My answer? "There are just some things I know " and I'll do everything within my means to help you.

      Yes! Its so nice to have a roof finally, and the sauna has been Mathias big dream since we moved here so i guess its time to focus on that soon! :) We use all kinds of tags and we have had some interest from some media but we want to take it slow, one thing at a time so we now what we are doing :D

    I think a lot of farm people have a mud room which is where you take off your boots/shoes, dirty clothing and also a hand washing area so when you actually go into the house area you're not bringing all the undesirable stuff with you. My mud room was also my laundry room where I had the clothes washer and dryer. So good to leave it and get back to it a bit later.
    I'm loving all of your videos so much. I had started watching only recently and more or less randomly but I found a link where I am now watching them all in order which is so nice. You 2 are doing a fabulous thing for your lives as well as the lives of your animals. Be happy and remember to Love everyone. Much Love from me and many cyber hugs.

    As for green tomatoes at the end of the season, wrap them in newspaper and put them into a box or bucket in a dark space (we kept ours in the garage). Check them regularly. They will continue to ripen and turn red. Although I've only made them once, Fried Green Tomatoes are a thing in the southern United States.

I am sure someone has already mentioned to you before now that the extra room on the front through which you enter would be a porch. As you are changing your clothes and taking off/putting on your boots here then in English it would be generally referred to as a 'Boot Room'. Ann's family have a farm and I have stayed and worked on occasion farms and they also know as boot rooms on farms!     Carrots are a cold weather crop so you can leave them in the ground in the winter and pick them when you need them. They get sweeter too. They also need really loose soil so do parsnips. Your carrots look great!

    Making my way here from the very first episode; these vlogs are absolutely enchanting. I haven't yet seen the later episodes, so someone may have already suggested a better name for the front room of a house. But in French Canada, we have a word for the outdoor entrance to a chalet or large house: a vestibule. The word was translated directly from the French usage into English, but I think it fits well! Google defines it as "an arctic entry."
    Thanks for all the time and beauty you pour into these vlogs. I'm learning so much and enjoying every second :)

    When I have lived in Northern climates I have found that varieties of tomatoes that ripen early is the only option. Ripe tomatoes can take anywhere from 50 days to 150 days. Find a seed catalog that informs you how long until ripe tomatoes. Most heirloom varieties take a long time to ripen. Also I have found that cherry tomatoes tend to be more rewarding than Roma’s or slicing tomatoes. Good luck 👍.

    You have a lot on your plate (English meaning you have a lot you have to do) and you will have to have your priorities. You will work very hard and must not forget to enjoy what you are doing. Gradually, you will accomplish so much but you can only do it one day at a time. I know you have a lot of people who care about you and who will wish you well, as I do.

    I so appreciate that you two are making a huge effort to make these vlogs in English. I don't think many of us see our own languages hard to learn till we try to learn another language. You are both doing great with your English. It's definitely a lot of work growing your homestead into something you can make a living from and sustain yourselves as well. Takes a lot of time and hard work. It's kind of a lesson in history as well. When the pioneers in the United States moved west and settled their lands and grew from nothing basicially. Add to that, you are making the vlogs which is also a lot of work. You are doing fantastic!

    that front room should be your green house. Then you could keep it warm and start your garden early. and have it heated. I enjoy watching.

    Take green tomatoes and slice and bread them then fry them. Yummy! Also, you can make green tomato chow chow which is a type of relish.

    we are zone 3b in northern Minnesota,usa... our growing season is from June 1 to Sept 15.... very short. w temps that dip to -35 And -40f in winter. where I live was first settled by finlanders and Swedish ppls.... the climate was just too harsh for others I guess lol. any how, I have to start my tomatoes and peppers and eggplants and melon indoors around March 15 in order to get a good harvest. we are also off grid, so this can be a challenge w lighting and space. I dunno if you can maybe start seeds that soon where you are... or bring them to your parents or grandmothers? it will ensure they have enough time since I know you have a long winter and shorter summer too. hugs from the big woods ♡

      We seem to have zone 4b-5a according to the us system, but the season is short here as well. It also varies a lot locally, just up in the village from us they have a little milder climate. Yes, I've heard that about Minnesota, that a lot of nordic people settled there. We borrow a little space at Tovas parents to start some tomatoes and such. Hopefully we find out a way to start indoors in our new cabin, we'll see :)

    As you gradually gain more experience and knowledge from your different building and dairy projects, you should consider giving a workshop on some of these topics, I think it would attract many "students" with similar aspirations, plus It would be an income for you...

    I found my way to your channel early this morning, and started watching vlog #1. It is now past midnight, and this is how far I've got. I am mesmerised. This is truly stunning. It's like reality TV with all of the good parts, and without the pesky drama. Your progress, both on the farm and with the technicalities of making videos is amazing. I'm from Northern Norway, and although there's a lot of off grid permaculture videos on CZcams, most of what I find seems to be located in more fertile areas. It gives me hope for my own future to see people living off of the land in a climate which so closely matches my own. I am thoroughly enjoying this, and can't wait to watch the next "episode" after some sleep!

      @@inlesinlet oh, very nice. We find inspiration in how people lived here befor the industrial world, both settlers and indigenous people. There's a wealth of knowledge there that is disappearing fast. There is ways to live in harmony with the land where ever in the world you live :) /Mathias

    Hi guys.
    We started to watch your vlog just couple of days ago. We really like it and we would like to wish you good health and power to carry on this great work.
    In that case if You have still remaining green tomatos You can put near some bananas. After taking inside just need to put together into a bigger plate and place somewhere on a higher shelf. Or we are doing in Hungary fermented green tomatos if You are interested I can give you the recipe.

    Hello! I know this is a while back now in your vlogs, but I just recently found your channel and I am really enjoying watching all of your videos. One idea I've read about recently for colder climate greenhouses is that you can actually submerge them a bit in the ground which helps retain the heat for longer, maybe that could help the tomatoes get the time they need to ripen?

    Did you know that putting green tomatoes into dark warm place makes them blush. I usually collect them away from the greenhouse when the nights get colder (before they freeze). Then I wrap them into the newspaper and let them be there. Works very well but needs to check every second day cause the tomatoes can be spoiled suddenly by one bad tomato.
    Good to know there gonna be one proper sauna in Sweden. :D
    P.S. Lol you guys when finding the right words, I feel you, even thou you have very good vocabulary.

      It sure will, if we stay on the path! Yes, we have the tomatoes upp on the drying racks along the roof inside. They are getting some color. But eventually we're going to make a chutney of them. Haha, yes, I'm always disappointed by the saunas in sweden. Seldom the löyly is good, and then it feels like a waste of time being in the sauna. /Mathias

    You might have to put a heater in your greenhouse during real cold times. Not quite sure but see if you can find something on CZcams on growing in greenhouse in minus degrees areas

    Try a shorter season variety of veggies.
    I live in Alberta Canada and we have great success with apples.
    We have got frost and some snow already. I think we had 2 days of fall.

    If you want sweeter carrots you need to leave them in the ground longer a good frost or two will make carrots , turnips and brussell sprouts sweeter. I heard you guys talking about adding the rabbit and chicken manure to your garden and that is fine but you are adding a lot of nitrogen a lot of nitrogen grows a lot of greens or tops and not a lot of fruit or product, you need to amend the soil with other nutrients to equalize the nitrogen, things to add are things you have like egg shells, wood ashes some sawdust and other things you have that will work with the nitrogen to grow the fruit/veggies better.There are also clover, beans, winter wheat and fall rye crops that can be grown with the food crops and left for in ground for fertilizer. Hmmm there is so much to tell...Also to store your carrots, without the top greens, I put my carrots in bins with damp sand, I layer the sand and carrots in the bin and continue with the carrots and sand layers until I am out of carrots. The bins cannot be in freezing weather but not heated either in a earthen house, or cold room or such and as the time goes on the carrots will grow the little white hair roots and will get a dark orange color and become sweeter. To recover the carrots you dig in the sand and take the carrots you need and leave the rest. In your plans you talk of fruit trees, do what you can to get them in the ground as soon as possible, they will provide years of food for you and the animals but they are a few years away from helping you if you plant them now it takes time to get fruit trees to produce. Try to propagate plants from friends and family, check out these things called "rooter pots" from a place called "Lee Valley" is a store the rooter pots are a time saving way to get fruit trees started. Good Luck you have a lot of dreams but that is good, just don't be too upset that it takes so long to get things done, it's all in the plan.

    ooh and by the way, if you start to grow the chili's in late winter indoors (only the growing fase, under tl-lights , colour 33 that are grow lights basically) and put them in the greenhouse in spring, you already have a jump on the growing season, and they will probably be ripe when it gets colder outside

      We plant them indoors in february/march, But we haven't manage to get them really ripe till the minus degrees comes knocking. Maby we need those growlights. The problem is that we don't have any electricity for that :)

    Hope you are both well, and Mathias is both enjoying and doing well in school and that Tova is not struggling too much with the daily tasks, I’m sure that’s not the case and Viking girl power has come in handy💪
    The place is looking amazing guys, and it’s quite nice to see how it’s all coming along and also from the last couple of vlogs, how much the weather has changed. Was really sorry that the tomatoes and carrots didn’t really seem to take this season😔 I was wondering that perhaps there is some nutrient rich soils you could perhaps look in
    For next season, also pruning them a bit if they’re too bushy they will Ripen a lot faster and also grow bigger.. please note I’m not a tomato expert these are just some of my old granny’s tips☝️😂

    Great video once again. I don't know if you have the time, but there was a series shown on BBC television many years ago called 'The Victorian Kitchen Garden'. Parts of it show how the Victorians produced vegetables in and out of season and how they stored them. This was done in the comparatively small gardens of stately homes - almost like smallholdings. There might be some useful tips that you could apply to your situation. It's not on youtube, but if you search the title on Dailymotion, you should find it there - if not I could send you a DVD. Also, I expect you know, but you can make a nice chutney (like a pickle) from tomatoes that are still green.

      The Victorian Farm was a later series by some of the same people - still interesting though. The Victorian Kitchen Garden is not on CZcams due to copyright problems apparently, but it is on something called 'dailymotion'. www.dailymotion.com/video/x5mpc6t

    Your veggies look great. I see you have a strawberry tower. Do you like it? I was thinking of making one but I'm not sure if the plants would freeze and die over our cold winters. You can leave your carrots in the ground until after frost, they become sweeter.

      No, we didn't do it right I think, it's too steep, the tower won't hold the earth or the water so good, gets really dry fast. All the strawberrys died off and now I have planted wild strawberrys that can handle the cold and dryness a bit better 😊 Maybe if we rebuild it somehow, but as it is now it won't work for us /Tova
