H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... Here we go with week 158 of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be 291). These episodes were taped on July 11, 1976 and first aired in early September of 1976. Our three stalwart regulars are all in fine fettle and joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Betty White, back after two weeks off. This will be her 39th week (of 75). Betty sits at a comfortable 50% accuracy rating, between Charles with 51.0% and Fannie with 48.0%. ---- Betty White trivia: She always held down the sixth seat (all 75 weeks), and she and Fannie - the two most frequent semi-regulars - never once appeared together on the Match Game '7x panel! ~~~Joey Bishop, who will be appearing for his 4th week of 5 total. He last visited in 746-750, and his final week will come in episodes 871-875. He has yet to have a shot at the head-to-head. ~~~And Lynn Deerfield, another one-and-done guest panelist. Last week we had a rare treat seeing Fannie play the head-to-head twice (chosen by two different contestants, no less). Even so, looking back at the past ten weeks, the H/H has been an almost exclusive Richard Dawson segment - the only other celebs who played during all that time were Fannie (4 times) and Brett (5 times). That left Richard with the lion's share: 43 questions. But he's done well, matching an impressive 20 of those 43 times. This week, my top H/H wish is for Charles to play again. It's well past time. He hasn't been called on since his mega-run of 7 + 2 attempts back in 707-717, so we're looking at nearly 70 episodes with no CNR H/H action! How is that even legal? Betty would be a welcome choice, as always. And of course, I always get a kick out seeing Brett freak out about being chosen to play the head-to-head. Anyway, whatever happens in the H/H this week, I plan to just sit back and enjoy some 1976-style ________! ~~~Today's action: We start right off with the Super-Match because our new champion won his first game in the waning moments of the prior show. Today's audience match question: "________ Lark" (My thoughts: Sky, Happy as a, On a) The celebs: Brett (Sky), Betty (Meadow), and Richard (Mud) The choice: Meadow The answers: Happy as a, Sky, Meadow (I just remembered that Meadowlark Lemon was a well-known personality around that time, playing for the Harlem Globetrotters. There were even two Saturday-morning Hanna-Barbera cartoon series about the Globetrotters in the 1970s, as well as a live-action Saturday-morning TV show in 1974-75 on which Lemon appeared. I'm sure all that helped make "meadowlark" more memorable to the audience polled for this question.) Well, our champion chose the best suggestion (from Betty). Now who will he choose for the head-to-head? He called on Brett first, so she's possible. He took Betty's suggestion (and he goes up for his hug/kiss), so she's a possibility. And you can never rule out Richard. A lot of contestants "save" him for the third suggestion, but still end up going with him for the head-to-head. If I were forced to guess, I'd say Betty, with Brett my number two guess. Let's see... Well I'm doubly wrong! It's Richard again. ("Quelle surprise!") As I reported in the preview above, Richard has played 43 of the past 52 head-to-head questions, and he's matched an impressive 20 of those 43 times. However, he's missed the last five in a row. He rarely misses six in a row (his record is 8 misses in a row). Today's H/H question: "Boxing _______ " (My first thought was Helena. Just kidding. I'll say Glove. That's got to be the definitive answer because it's the most generic, common expression, no? -- I doubt Richard would say Boxing Day because he would know that an American would be unlikely to think of it.) Richard doesn't take long to think. His answer is definitely longer than "day," and I have a feeling he wrote "glove," but I can't rule out "ring." The champion says "Ring." The camera cuts to Richard quickly, and he winces, which is uncharacteristic of him (usually he hides any telling reaction). This leads me to believe they didn't match, but you can never be sure with Richard. (He is an actor after all!) The audience voices displeasure with the contestant's answer. I honestly think it's possible, but I still think "glove" is the better choice... Hmm. Richard rattles off an impressive list, including "glove," but he wrote "Match." (I think that was a better choice than "ring," but I maintain that my answer is still the best!) No match today. (Richard maintains a razor-thin lead over Brett.) Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 48.0% (12 wins in 25 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.3% (195 wins in 472 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 786, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
Betty While passed on December 31, 2021, at the age of 99 years old. She would have been 100 years old on January 17, 2022. They were planning a birthday celebration for her, and are still going to do some kind of tribute for her.

Lynn Deerfield, who played Holly on the soap opera "Guiding Light" during the 1970s, died Friday (Nov. 11, 2011) of undetermined causes at her home in University City, her family said Monday. Ms. Deerfield, whose original name was Rosalind Jane Hirschfeld, was 61. Ms. Deerfield was the youngest of three children born to Madelienne Moscowitz and antiques dealer Richard Hirschfeld. She graduated in 1967 from Ladue Horton Watkins High School, where she starred as Emily in "Our Town," and in other productions. Her family also recalled her as a gifted pianist. After a year at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley, she moved to New York City, where she trained as an actor at the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse. Her classmates included Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. She changed her name and chose Deerfield because Hirschfeld, when translated from German to English, is Deerfield, said her sister-in-law, Adrienne Hirschfeld. In 1970, she was cast as a new star in the long-running CBS soap opera "Guiding Light." She was a regular on the show for about six years. Ms. Deerfield married three times. Her first husband was Paul Mates, a Wall Street lawyer who survives her. In 1975, Ms. Deerfield married Bill Beutel, the late ABC news anchor. After they divorced, Ms. Deerfield married Michael Kelly. He preceded her in death. She returned to St. Louis in the mid-1980s.
