This Ultra Rare Lotus Exige S1 Redefines What I Thought Was Hardcore

  • Today on the show we've got a 2000 Lotus Exige S1 (track-spec) in our command for a full day of driving and tearing up the twisty backroads. This extremely rare example of the Exige made its way to the USA originally back in the year 2000 when Lotus USA imported 8 LHD examples for track use only. Since the car is over 15 year old, it has been recently registered and insured for use on public roads in Canada. Under the engine lid is a slightly modified Rover 4-cylinder engine. It's all naturally aspirated, all analog, loud as hell, and it's the track weapon i've always wanted to drive on the street. Enjoy!

I've drove an Exige and an Elise a couple years ago, what I felt after having driven it is that you should drive it if you can afford one, or just turn around and run away as fast as you can if you can't afford one, simply becuase there's nothing, and I mean literally nothing, that can be more involving than this car.
It'll be a pain in the ass every single time you'll be looking for a new car to buy.

@@drew699 I did the Palmersport event in the UK where we drove a LMP2 style two seater , a Formula Renault, an Ariel Atom and a race riggered E92 with slicks and wings. None of those came close the visceral experience of a Caterham. Many were faster of course, but who cares? Zero to sixty times are for the sales ads. Lap times are for races. But the driving experience is what matters for enthusiasts. And nothing beats a Caterham for that.

About 10 years since my father bought one, the sound of the 1.8L atmospheric Rover engine inside the Exige S1 is spectacular thanks to the massive carbon airbox. It took me a lot of time to get used to it. 60,000km and the engine still has 174HP (originally rated at 177HP). These cars can last a lifetime if you take good care of them. I wish he never sells it, you can't find anything quite like it anymore, supercharged Lotus are way more powerful but can't match this one in terms of sound.

I actually like the mr2 more than the elise, it is certainly a very interesting vehicle- but without the looks of a well modified mr2 or an exige. Also the BEST mr2 for what id want would only set you back 10-15k, where a stock beat up elise is mid 20's to 30's.

I love the Elise S1 and still have a 1999 S1 111S stashed in my batcave. It has a tuned original K block engine....nice and light!
It's been there without moving since 2014...long story, a mechanic made a mess of the cambelt change, through not using the sprocket lock, and there was a very light coming together of pistons and valves. I can't see any problems with compression, and the leakdown test also shows no damage so I'm hoping next year when I hope to fire it up again all will be well.
It's 200kg lighter than the S1 Exige and has 14bhp more.....I once had a Gp4 bodied Renault-Alpine A110 (the 70s version) and deeply regret having sold that, so the Elise won't be sold!

Very sad that the US hasn’t had the chance to drive these cars (S1 Elise & Exige) for 25 years! The S1 Elise is now I understand eligible for import. The S3 Exige is a beast and again US has missed out on this too. An early Elise S1 with MMC is 700KG - nothing comes close to it other than a Caterham. You don’t know what you’ve been missing & now we all find ourselves in the dying days of the ICE.....

I’ve owned my S1 111s for almost 20 years it’s worth as much as I paid for it then. Crap weather and Covid lockdown mean I’ve got some serious withdrawal symptoms owning an Elise is like being a heroin addict you can’t leave it alone.

The S1 Exige was a special kind of car. You should really try and get behind the wheel of an Esprit S4s or Sport 350 though if you can. People may not think of it as a Super Car, but the Sport 350 is still a life altering vehicle to drive, even 18 years after it's launch.

I used to work for a Lotus Dealership here in the UK. I've had the good fortune to drive a number of thier offerings. The S1 Exige is a raw cammy brute of a thing, wonderful but terrifying at the same time. The Sport 350 is like sitting in on the floor in a leather lined glove that has a sligshot somehow attached to it. It feels heavy and mechanical through the steering and pedals, and that low long nose makes it damn near impossible to judge how far away you are from things in front. The gear change is a squat, meaty shifter with a short positive throw. You feel like you're really DRIVING the thing. And then, you put your foot near the throttle, those fuel injected throttle bodies crack open, the V8 throbs, and you grumble off down the road, a slight transition whine accompanying the cam-chain rattle from the V8 behind your head as you go.
All too soon, you become comfortable with this beast and you think you know it. You stab the throttle, breaking the butterflies wide open, and the twin Garrat T25 turbos spool up, slowly at first lulling you into a false sense of security. Then without warning the boost crescendo arrives, and out of nowhere and with a wiff of petrol your rev needle surges the car forward crushing your kidneys into the seat leather and 295 ft/lb of tourque married to 350BHP assault your senses forcing an involuntary lift of your right foot as your life flashes before your eyes. Chances are you weren't ready for it, and in spite of having huge 295/35 ZR18 Pirreli's on the rear, broke the back end away, adding to your terror.
      Sensational isn't the word.

Thank you, you're too kind. The Esprit really is a wonderful thing. The really fast ones like the S4 and the Sport 350 are hellish expensive to maintain, as the Turbos are almost a service item they last such a short time (only down to where Lotus had to squeeze them in, not because Garret made bad turbos) but if your pockets are deep enough, or you can work on them yourself, they're a much overlooked car.

Paul Gamble Not kind Sir, honest. I’ve always loved the Sport 350 and have viewed it as the ultimate Lotus alongside the Exige S1. The Exige S2 doesn’t really do it for me. You are right, the Esprit twin turbo is very much overlooked, the prices do suggest that.
