- In this rare video footage, Ted Greene gives a guitar lesson covering the beloved jazz standard “Someday My Prince Will Come” by composer Frank Churchill. Video Credits: Cesar Pineda 12/18/96.
Here’s a brief summary of the lesson:
1. Begins in the key of F
2. Tries the key of A - too low!
3. Then the key of D - jazz waltz, add walking bass
4. Finally ends up in the key of Db - improvisation
Assignment: KNOW the chord names, numbers, and their function. Start in F, then try A and Db.

He is improvising over the changes with chords using counter points. He is talking at the same time .He is changing keys' . He is never repeating himself for 10mn.and each voice leading sounds Great...GENIUS...!!!
Ted imparts a new level of GENIUS above I am now going to refer to SUPER GENIUS as "TED" as only Ted can do. This is so TED
@@jazzed2b Yeah, he is smart. He must have went to a lot of Ted Talks
Mr. Greene SHAMED us all !!!🎸🎸🎸🎸

I was going to point out exactly what you mentioned! What a singular talent Ted is. It’s a bit hard to explain to folks today: where do you find anything comparable? Great comment! Cheers
Ted is the opposite of ‘impress me in 30 seconds or less with something physically spectacular…’ Instead, his music is deep and reveals more and more with each listen. I could listen to him play Happy Birthday for hours…
Scott Henderson said Ted was happiest in his room just learning to play incredible music. Didn't care in the least about "fame and fortune." (or even having a career in 'music'). Just wanted to learn as much as he could. ❤ RIP. 😢
Most beautiful moment and how you know Ted was not only a genius but a truly good person- he looks right at the student with total conviction and says simply “you can do it”
That''s fantastic, so encouraging.
Words can’t describe it. It’s obvious he could literally go forever on a song and never run out of ideas.
This is what 100,000 hours on the guitar looks like
He is just.... beyond category. To know that much, and to be able to so effortlessly turn it into things for his fingers to do, it's almost impossible to believe, but there he is, doing it, like watching someone make a stone hover in the air. It's hard to believe that he and I are the same species of animal.
I'm french guitarist, I took only 2 lessons with Ted at his home. He help me a lot on my comprehension of chords construction, chords melodies. He is of course a exceptionnel guitarist, A genuis like tell Jean Marc my friend but he was a great teatcher too. Thank you Ted, I will never forget you. Pierre.
How can I play like him mate? What would be the one practice technique to get me the biggest return?
@@joelstephenson8017 you're so fucked bro haha ! learn chords and learn music theory, know each and every interval and the movement of them to create melodies on top of melodies
@@joelstephenson8017 tough question but if I had to pick the single biggest thing - start using major add 9 chords. Seriously. C D E G for Cadd9. Ted uses them *all* the time and they sound so good, but you rarely hear them used on guitar. Work out some inversions and it will make your major key tunes sound magical
@@xavriley thanks mate! I'll do that.
I'm crying, this is beautiful.
“Use your ears and your brain and your eyes and you’ll find the stuff - I’ll help you ...” Ted Greene!
Deep quote.
"I still have ten minutes" "You don't but I'll do it anyway"
I can't believe we were lucky enough to get this incredible footage, just because Mr Greene was kind and gave extra time to an eager student!
Ted Greene's harmonizations are always delightful to hear. He is endlessly inventive. His imagination knows no limits.
The lesson here being, "Ted was not of this earth". Beyond amazing.
I'll never comprehend how someone can play walking bass, melody, and chords all at the same time on guitar! Amazing skill and he makes it sound so good!
Man its so inspiring, he has the same depth of relationship with his instrument as a master pianist. Puts the rest of us to shame, really.
How about absolute Virtuoso!!! What creativity!!! I wish I was astute enough to grasp what he was explaining- Maybe if I watch it a bunch more times! Thank you so much, for posting this video!!!☺
I've seen just about all of these Tests videos shared by former students over the years and every time I take something new from them, they are that dense. Ted was awesome
damn. been a musician all my life, mostly a violinist just began learning guitar, and this was at once the most beautiful and educational lesson / masterclass i've ever seen. dude had a near-bach level of intuition re: counterpoint, harmony, melody, beauty
What an absolutely remarkable human being. Truly a genius and such a likable guy. Thanks very much to all responsible for sharing this beautiful footage with the world!
What a brilliant, sweet man.
this guy talks to his fingerboard .. he's amazing.
What an absolute treat. I wasn’t expecting this to pop up. I love Ted Green. Unbelievable this guy was.
Same happened to me. It's 3am and i don't wanna go to sleep since tomorrow is Monday and I kinda hate my job. This video just pops out on my feed and suddenly this world is a brighter, precious place than before. Thanks life
I bought Ted's book ",
Chord Chemistry" over 40 years ago, but it's only thanks to you for uploading the sound of a wonderful player. Many thanks
An absolute Master Ted was! It's great that you have shared these recordings that are priceless
No aspect left untouched. Brilliant!
What an absolute gem he was!
This is really incredible, mind boggling talent.
Ted makes music tuning his guitar! what a colossal loss, he’s so smooth
Total and complete master of the guitar. Reminds me of the few lessons I took from him sitting on the floor in his living room.
Ted's usual brilliant approach to playing a solo guitar arrangement to a song -- all just off-the-cuff upon request during a private lesson.
Sheer genius!
Thank you for sharing!
This is really as guitarist the stuff we should strive to play,in my humble opinion
Every time I listen to anything of Ted’s playing I get so blown away that I can put it in words...
Yet ... here you are ... putting it into words.
By far the best Ted talk I've ever seen
underrated comment
he was a very special brother! beautiful
As I've commented before this man has total control of sound.
That was great! Thank you for sharing!
So unfortunate that he did not perform and record more than he did and that he passed so young. These videos are priceless
That was wonderful.
Very inspiring! Thank you for sharing. 🙏
Blown away, absolute genius!!
Sublime Master! 🙏🏾
I keep coming back to this, years of study in here for me.
I am stunned.
Great lesson. Thank you
A lovely evolution in music.
I feel so blessed to have come across this man.
Thank you for uploading this nick! I secretly hope there will be more and more videos of ted being uploaded for many years to come
Sick. Amazing playing. Beautiful harmony.
Thanks for posting...so miss his videos. Mind boggling in harmonic complexity.
It's awesome to have some insight into how this genius processed music... wow!
bruh i wish there was a full version of him playing You are the sunshine of my life
Just brilliant
Simply gorgeous Ted!
Thanks for posting my friend.
Love the way he just becomes the music
What a beautiful soul, so gifted
Priceless.
So good!
Wonderfull Ted Green ! 🎧
Great talk through the build up of the song.
Holy fook. Genius. Incredible godlike genius . Enuf said. Words can’t express his brilliance. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼👏
Just WOW! The genius also captured this moment
Absolute virtuoso.
Realmente Ted Greene fue un GENIO!!!!
His knowledge is.... huge!
A glimmer of hope: "You can do it!"
Such a master
Pretty amazing.
Maestro!
Mind blown!
We (society) aren't making anyone like this today. And I fear we never will again. We have people like Jacob Collier, who have technical proficiency that is on another level, but even he lacks the soul that someone like Ted had.
Everything is losing life. We live in the end of the end days. Jesus coming soon. Knock on the door and He will open..not maybe open, He Will open.
@@HarryBarry97 Yes, humanity is dying, and giving way to the silicon age, and silicon beings. We are at a crossroads where we have the choice of saving humanity, or yielding it. But most people don't realize we are at that point, and by the time they do, it will be too late.
andybaldman True what you are saying. But There is a spiritual warfare but satan has blinded minds of unbelivers. Ask Jesus in to your heart and He will lift the veil from your eyes like He did for me. I know people think this sounds crazy but do it if yoy want the truth. Jesus Loves you very much.
Jacob actually credited Ted in a tweet a couple of years ago. Said he "learnt so much" from him (presumably by listening to the solo guitar album) despite them never having met or spoke.
GENIO.
It’s beautiful that people are this good out there…. But it makes me a bit sad that I’ll never get even close, even after being a professional musician for twenty years. I’d love to be able to just sit down and play something like this.
just wow...
The thing that really sucks about players like this ----
Is that it took me to be near 60 years old to understand HOW GREAT such a guitarist / musician like this - is!
Has anyone transcribed this? Just beautiful. Chord master.
wow.
My guitar would strike with him in the same room 😅
Genius 👌
Wow!!!!
♥♥♥
First time I've heard someone say, 'The Relative Minor of the IV's V chord'!
I am in heaven ........
Ted put on a clinic here.
He's been dead for 16 years.
The Keith Jarrett of the guitar.
The relative minor of the four's five chord.
Sounds So Bach there 5:30
I tough the same things
OMG
wow. yoda of guitar.
The REAL Ted Talks
Well, until now I would've never willingly tried anything in a flat key... guess it's time to get out of the usual safe zone xD
“This is what happens when you don’t get enough sleep”....
-Ted Greene
I can’t imagine what would have happened if Ted DID get enough sleep haha
3:12 who deftly comes up with an emergency harmonic device to modulate key centers without breaking the flow of your performance -- ingenious in its co-option of the root of the current key as a pedal tone against which your two keys will be bridged -- literally within seconds, or to be more precise, during the few seconds in which you were also grappling with the sudden realization that playing this standard in this key robs the melody of its capacity to be easily heard and sung. like who does that. don't even answer, i'm only asking for effect.
Damn you're still around lol
@@FreeTheJambon yo! good to see you!
cat behind the camera? got some lines too!
Never seen Ted play this guitar -- anyone know what kind of guitar this is? I think I heard him say nylon at some point...?
Ted's mention of "nylon string" has to do with range of access on a classical guitar which Cesar normally plays at home. Ted is playing a vintage Guild electric with P-90 pickups. I'm not sure which model. There is a list of Guild guitars Ted owned posted at www.tedgreene.com if you care to do a little investigating.
@@nickstasinos Thanks so much Nick!
Did the recordings were for the students or for Ted's collection?
"I won't walk the bass... I would never..." minute later... " maybe a little"
I wonder if fellow musicians who watch this actually know he is changing the tone center atleast twice, talking during the execution,WOW,im a rock player that dabbles alot,if you really want to dabble this is your man! Chord Chemistry changed my life,RIP TED GREENE
His face and his mannerisms remind me so much of Commander Data, it's deeply endearing and slightly eery all at once.
And of course the level of musicianship is simply astonishing -- as one would expect from an android ...
And that is why the jazz standard "Out Of Nowhere" sounds so much like the theme song for Star Trek!
1:13
He reminds me of trio guitarist from Mexico. Those old men can all play like this
Back to 6 which is the 5 of the 2. Only Jazz musicians would understand LOL
@ 7:45 Ted proves yet again, his ears are much larger than any guitar neck.
