    I don't think I've ever heard a more instantly musical "formula". Thanks for the demonstration.

    I can't believe how many amazing bebop lines you created on the spot just using these two concepts. Barry's version of using the chromatic scale has totally opened things up for me, and your lesson here is so helpful in how to apply it in "the real world" on guitar which I always had a hard time doing with Barry's concepts. You SHOWING how you adapt these to guitar makes all the difference. The last minute of this lesson, where you talk about doing the work, even in the face of feeling like you are wasting time on 'the minutiae, was inspiring because I often felt that way while learning these 'basics". I think the thing you and Barry have taught me the most so far is how you can create amazing music by focusing on, really mastering, the tiny simple things and then linking them together. I've notice this with your Charlie Parker lessons. You take little tiny SHORT ideas and turn them into a whole study whereas I in the past have tried working on applying whole lines that may have had 20 eighth and sixteenth notes in them and then I don't remember them and can't use them in the real world. Please keep going! I also would love lots more lessons (both chord and single note) on mastering other movements that we run into when playing over standards. Each one has it's own little twists that make it fun and add to our arsenal. thank you again, Chris.

      Your feedback is appreciated Steve. Barry's method is wonderful. I've been blessed to be around him to pick up what I can from him . The least I can do is share it.
      You're 100 percent right about the little things. It's all about the little things.

      @@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616 BTW, Is there some sort of Patreon account or something you've thought about? I know some people really appreciate all the lessons and aren't in a position to contribute, and that's totally understandable. But when I look at how much I've spent on TrueFire, My Music Masterclasses, Mike's Masterclasses, etc... which are all awesome sites... it feels wrong that you are teaching me so much more than any of those ... for free! :) Either way, I hope you can continue teaching on this channel for a LONG time.

    I've never seen chromatics explained this way. Barry Harris' chromatic scale automatically lends it self to a more creative approach and when you add the pivot, the sky's the limit. Thanks so much for explaining it so concisely!

    Just discovered your channel while searching content related to Barry Harris. I’m thoroughly enjoying your outlook and style.
    The pivot term threw me in this context, as I was expecting a look at pivot chord modulation. What you call pivot I learned as octave displacement. Regardless, this is great material. Thanks for sharing.

    Love this eyeopening concept. Questioin: ascending, Bb7, couldnt you play to be coherent with the "system": Bb, A, Ab, F, G, Gb, F, E, Eb, C, D, Db, C, Cb, B?

    • @Sandemose
      @Sandemose Před 3 lety

      Of course you could do both, since we talk about music here, but for the sake of practicing the scales to get the sound into my ears, I´ll go for the suggestion above to start with. Thanks again. This is so fun - actually practicing music, and sound, and not just scales.

    Bb chromatic scale: Between D and Eb what about using Fb instead of F ?

  • @TypingHazard
    @TypingHazard Před 4 lety +1

    I love the chromatic scale presented in this way. Interesting that the 'extra' half-steps don't jump down when descending - instead of playing 4 5 3 b3 2 b2 1, playing 4 2 3 b3 2 b2 1 for example. I guess that would be okay though right, since it just wants to be rhythmically correct

    • @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616
      @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616  Před 4 lety +2

      Yep. The half step can be any note. It's kind of like a rhythmic place holder.

    • @taylorfusion
      @taylorfusion Před 4 lety +1

      I thought the same thing but it still works either way. Nice to have this kind of melodic power.

  • @bmctiernan

    Great tutorials ! Having trouble descending from the root of a harmonic minor scale using the chromatic scale . A harmonic minor scale descending from the note A - what is the note required between the F and E notes ? I am playing descending A B G# F ? E .........or is a chromatic required as the E is falling on the beat as a chord tone

  • @guidemeChrist
    @guidemeChrist Před 4 lety +1

    Lol how about just bend into the microtone between 3 and 4 and use that as a chromatic passing tone between scale tones

    • @guidemeChrist
      @guidemeChrist Před 4 lety +1

      Or how about, on a major chord, go 3, (4), half sharp 4, (#4), 5, bracketed notes as off beats
      That way the 11th harmonic of the harmonic series lands on a beat, between the two sour notes (4 and #4)
