Daaaamn, Denzel is amazing, and Viola just nails it, too. There is a charm, a flow, a great tension in this play, with good chemistry between the actors. Some scenes made me laugh, some made me afraid... like the last scene with Denzel speaking to Death. He's my favorite actor, and after seeing this, I'm even more of a fan. Can't wait for the movie to come out.

It's amazing that Denzel hired most of these actors to reprise their roles for the film. And, the film was awesome, earning Viola an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Denzel Washington & Viola Davis are 2 of the finest actors today & they were perfectly cast in this.
But I've also got to give credit to James Earl Jones for setting the bar up for them. This was a fantastic play & heartbreaking to watch.

I saw the movie yesterday. Phenomenal script and acting. It is disturbing to me when people laugh inappropriately during scenes where the message far out weighs the way it was delivered. It implies to me, that they aren't listening to the meat of the message. There are so many life lessons in this creation of August Wilson's.....so much heavy dysfunction that runs through families and in particular the Black family. It was cathartic for me as I have lived my life with some of the very issues discussed. This should be required viewing for high school freshmen.

One of the many things that stand out to me in this story is the part played by Ms. Viola Davis. There are many Rose Maxson's out here and they dont get enough credit. Women who deal with toxic men that wound everybody they touch. Women that love and have the courage to spend life with Troy Maxson types. Im not trying to make Troy seem like the worst thing ever but it takes a lot to deal with such a person. There are many women out here who do it daily and what would man do without them.

@@kevinzhang6623 difference is that since the beginning of time, women have been expected to stick with a man no matter what. men left their wives who didn't perform to their standard with far less judgment or recourse than if a woman left. a woman's had to be beaten within an inch of her life for others to accept why she left (though often enough people would ask what she did to warrant being beaten or receive the treatment that she left over). a man could leave because she didnt cook on time enough or blow him often enough and get understanding (even support) from others.

I have watched the movie with Denzel Washington several times and seen the play recently in my hometown. I considered it a profoundly sad commentary on 1950's society and one man's life of missed opportunities and poor decisions. Some lines may be humorous, but I have no idea how people can laugh at nearly every line delivered by Troy Maxson, Rose Maxson or Jim Bono. I have to believe the actors were perplexed by the audience laughter - but what do I know.

Some of y'all be talking about the audience laughing cos they don't get the depth of it or something. Common. This isn't the full play, just snippets. I could tell from what I saw that every time the audience laughed, the actors and apparently the director intended it. A good play should take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, that includes laughter no matter how intense the play is. It's okay to laugh at times even in the face of really tough situations. We all do. So ain't nothing wrong with the audience laughing at some point.

If Black people find something funny...because it is funny to them, they are entitled to laugh. August Wilson wrote this with us in mind any damn way...so maybe, we laugh because we can relate or we've seen something or we understand it. These comments...and this was 10 years ago. So sick of being forever expected to abide by the white gaze.
