  • The Swanage Railway, determined as-ever to deliver on the promise of a regular 'Wareham Service', have once again called upon their partnership with South Western Railway to operate a 'Summer Saturday' service; on the back of its success last year.
Returning for the Summer season, the service will be operating every Saturday from the 25th of May to the 7th of September, with South Western Railway providing and operating the stock. The Swanage Railway remain currently unable to operate their own Mainline service to Wareham, due to delays with the upgrade work being carried out on their Class 121 and Class 117 DMU's.
The service begins at London Waterloo, working down to Wareham via Salisbury, Yeovil and Weymouth, before venturing onto Swanage Railway metals as far as Corfe Castle. From here, the DMU makes two further return trips between Corfe Castle and Wareham, before finally departing Corfe Castle bound for London, once again going via Weymouth, Yeovil and Salisbury. In conjunction with this, the Swanage Railway operate their Yellow Timetable, allowing passengers to connect with the regular passenger services operated by the Swanage Railway, and continue their journey onward to the Seaside.
    Locomotives:
    BR Standard Class 4MT Tank - 80104
    BR Class 26 - 26007
    SWR Class 159 DMU - 159107
All footage filmed on Saturday the 1st of June 2019.

It’s surprising to see a class 159 on a heritage railway. Never seen anything like this since a HST came to the ELR a while ago

Seeing Mainline stock on Heritage Railways isn't too unheard of down in this region anymore. Especially after last years' 'Summer Saturday' Service. Swanage metals have been graced by two HST's in this decade.

GWR do similar from Exeter St Davids to Okehampton on summer Sundays. Hopefully they can extend this idea and run services to Minehead and Kingswear(for Dartmouth).

Can you take a DMU direct from London Waterloo Station to the Swanage Railway?

How long is the DMU ride from London Waterloo Railway Station to the Swanage Railway?

@@Trip-the-Sungazer Yes, you can do it direct. It would take roughly 5 hours:

I was there that day: I arrived and left on the SWT DMU. It arrived shortly before midday and left before 4 - which didn't really give me long enough to do much: That was my only complaint. The weather was fantastic and so was SR.
In answer to @Quantum Dewott: I caught the DMU at Salisbury at 08:10 and traveled to Yeovil Junction, backed up on the restored chord to Yeovil Pen Mill, backed up again via Dorchester West to Weymouth, then backed up again via Dorch South to Wareham, and then reversed yet again onto SR at Worgret Junction. The train must have left London Waterloo at stupid o'clock AM as it stopped at almost every station between there and Salisbury I think I remember hearing. I enjoyed the trip from Salisbury; but from Waterloo 'would have been a bit tedious perhaps. - ?

Very glad you enjoyed your day! Must admit, even as a bystander, the timings do appear a bit 'tight' to make the most of a full day.
The service leaves London at 6:30, not making a great number of stops until it's West of Basingstoke.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel I was wondering if they could possibly look into laying on an extra service from Salisbury via perhaps Romsey, Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, Southampton, Totton, Brockenhurst, Bournemouth, and on to Wareham and then SR? If it departed at around 8AM it should get there by 10:30-ish using that route.

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 5 lety

Too much traffic on the South West Mainline, I believe, to slot the service in without having to side-line it multiple times on its route, while still making numerous pick-up stops for passengers. The easiest way to do it, would be catching regular SWR services to Wareham, then connect with the Corfe Castle shuttle there.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel The only alternative is to catch the 08:33 from Salisbury
, journey for 29m until 09:02 to Southampton Central. - Change train. - Travel for 1h 3m until 10:27 to Wareham, and then catch the 11:17 ( The train I'd be on if I went the usual route.) to get me to Corfe Castle at 11:35. - All that palaver to save 23 minutes travelling time and arrive at exactly the same time as I would have anyway. It appears my time spent on the SR will always be limited. :(

Unfortunately, that's how the South West Mainline works. It's a very congested part of the network.

Workhorse for British Rail Southern Region until almost twenty years ago. A lot of us miss them. Gave a bouncy and springy ride, but the seats were filled with horsehair and were quite comfortable. Been replaced by the likes of the class 377 Electrostar, which gives a very smooth ride, but the seats are only suitable for very short journeys, which irritates commuters that have to spend over an hour using them at each end of the day.
