I like his playing. He is not into just tearing up the keys trying to impress us like Rudess does on the Korg demos.
Yet they do consult regarding facial hair.
I agree. I think Rudess is very humble, not saying anything bad about him at all, but still... much more comfortable with this style of playing for a demo. Shows off the articulations very nicely.
Just spent a few hours with Jupiter 80 at my local music store. This is just an outstanding incredible machine. There is something about this synth which makes it stand out and be in a league of its own. Each sound plays in some specific unique way which is highly musical and melodic even when you are holding a single note. Although I have been glued to Korg OASYS, Kurzweil PC3K and several high end soft synths (Omnisphere, Massive, FM8, Alchemy, ES2 etc) for last 5-6 years, Roland is now going to find a place again in my studio after about 20 years.
Good secondary dsp varying processing. Post reverb, filtering, responding to actions and more. All this is easily possible with some of the best plugins. In fact this thing IS a plug in (software), and they bundle it with a keyboard and display. At the end of the day, it's just a computer program that is beautifully done.

Amazing synth, especially for the price. At least 3000 sounds that can all be combined into huge combinations that have over 100 voices of polyphony to fill.
Amazing sounding synth! Might be one of the best ever produced. I paid almost as much for my Korg Triton in 2000 with the EXB- MOSS expansion card installed and added memory. The JP-80 is a steal in its price range!

Great for film type music
Did some googling and found out that this is the keyboard used in the Pitbull and Ne-Yo song Time of our lives. Very nice sounding keyboard.
I have a new appreciation for what that instrument does. Wow. That is taking advantage of what digital does. That would be impossible to create that in an analog machine.

This is a great demo thank you. I'm really tempted to buy one of these and sell my Triton Studio. I wish there was an 88 key version as that's pretty much the only thing missing for me. A sampler would be nice but I can manage without that, and I do all my sequencing on my DAW anyway.

Thanks for this vid. I really really wanted to get this when it came out, and it was even sold at a demo sale from a local music store for 1700$ but I just could not afford it at the time and was thinking: I'll save up. But boom - taken out of production and now only used versions out there. And your video makes me really wish it would relaunch. Now there is the Jupiter X. what do you think Scott? Sounds like you prefer the Jupiter 80. - but in terms of hooking it up to daws and so on and using it in a live set. Perhaps the X could do the job. But the two just seem sooo different. In style and purpose. Not sure.

Hi Scott! Did I understand right that it is possible to tell the coloured buttons which sound out of the list is played when you first hit a button? If so, this would solve my problems changing sounds quickly during a live situation ;-)

I play hip hop, dub step, techno, drum and bass and other electronic dance styles live... the jupiter 80 seems like it is aimed mostly at acoustic sounds though. Am I wrong? At 14 minutes in he starts cooking some techno up.... I want to hear more of this! Also, the reviews say that while it's very powerful, it's got a very steep learning curve.
***** It has many many more supernatural synth sounds in it than supernatural acoustic sounds in it. Look up the sound list for the Jupiter 80. The Jupiter is the best of both worlds - acoustic and virtual analog. But it you only want analog you might be more interested in the new Roland JD Xi and the JD XA - analog digital crossover synth.

+zicoskywalker Music & Synthesizers - time moves on, technology moves on. this is an excellent machine and more capable than jupiter 8. as much as I love the jupiter 8 sound, we gotta get past our prejudices and objectively stack these up. and when we do, it not only hold up but surpasses.
Is it an updated version of the Jupiter 8?
***** no, it's a digital performance oriented keyboard which can produce many types of sound in addition to recreating the sound of many old equipment like Jupiter-8. It might not sound identical to Jupiter-8 but it can get extremely close. And it has many more features as a whole.

***** If you intend to sequence songs or ideas in keyboard itself, then look at the FA series. If you don't need sequencing because you always use the PC for that purpose, then yes Jupiter 80 (and its little brother 50) both are excellent sounding and highly capable sound design tools.

I have a Juno 106, and Sci Pro-One, and a Six Trak. I find most modern synths to be lacking in the soul department. This synth sounds good... then again it's almost worth more than my entire studio.
