Let's take a look at some of the odd things that we saw in the AFL Round 17 games. Still plenty of odd things that happened in our game this week. What is your favourite oddity??

the funniest/weirdest thing for me was that when melbourne play at the mcg the ground looks so empty but for some reason when they played the eagles way more people went.

As long as you continue to have contact with the ball across the line you can control it after and be paid the mark.

With regards Mihochek’s mark on the goal line. I’ve heard commentary that he had at least one hand on the ball at all times and since one handed marks are paid is not this a variation?

The tackle slips off before Rozee loses possession of the ball. Can't be holding the ball. Correct umpire call.

Crazy how big Harry from Carlton fully turned it around but so many other forwards - max king, ugle hagan etc are having shockers and receive no media backlash

Mihocek mark/ non mark ARC decision- they didn’t pay a mark, they had insufficient evidence to overturn the on field decision. Subtle but key difference I reckon.
the umpiring for the hawks v cats game was shocking, not saying we played any better but these umpires were shocking and mitch lewis getting hit high in a marking contest and the ump not paying it was the boiling point of watching that shocker on the weekend and the fact he did his acl has probs ruined our season now
11:45 they replayed this from behind Rohan shortly after and he does manage to get a legal handball away. Still should've been ball considering how long he had it, but the handball was there

4:08 - how about the trip that wasn't called on Florent? You mention it in your sanctions but make no mention of the fact the umpire missed a pretty devastating lapse in judgement. I'd say this is equally "odd". An absolute goliath oversight, mate ;-)

Not a Port supporter but Connor Rozee want b getting held when the ball came out. It was dropped bcos of the tackle but Bont has let go before Rozee dropped it. I agree with the umpires but I'd have no issue if it'd gone the other way.
100% correct call by umpire. Any other call would have been incorrect.
11:55 If you pay attention to gary’s arm (which WAS being tackled) he couldn’t truely dispose of the ball correctly due to his arm😭
Sorry but you missed an amazing opportunity to show Harris Andrews' deliberate intent to take it out in the 4th quarter v Crows. You could have shown it directly after Daicos getting pinged for the exact same thing. Harris even goes for the handball then doesn't then makes a b-line for the boundary. The umpiring is only getting worse as they add more rules in.
The GWS runner was just telling our players to score more goals cus without him we would've lost tbh 😭
Rankine sees someone coming at him to bump, ducks like a squib. Rankine sees an opponent blindsided off the ball, 'Im about to end this mans career'
Probably got fed up with being targeted by the Lions players
I'll correct that for you "Rankine sees an opponent who has been harassing him all quarter running directly towards him and so tries to create space off the stoppage with a regulation hip and shoulder. Makes the error of not noticing that Starcevitch isn't looking where he's running and so an unfortunate head clash occurs, injuring both players." You're welcome.

I think if melkshams mark is called a mark that could win mark of year, the 2nd pop up was elite and to recatch it on the ground was unreal.

Oddity for next week, with around a minute to go in the 2nd quater of the Firday night game Collingwood kick a Behind but on the Channel 7 graphic showed Geelong getting the behind only for the mistake to be corected 10 seconds later. (Don't know if the mistake showed up on the Fox coverage)

11:30 Bont didn't stick the tackle, by the time the ball spills free, Rozee isn't being tackled any more. Not sure I agree with the call but that's surely the ump's logic.
cincotta didn't get pushed in the back it was Brodie kemp. it was not the only obvious missed call that night.

The Rohan one they actually showed another angle where he got the handball off so it wasn’t incorrect disposal. I still reckon holding the ball should’ve been played earlier though

5:59 When I watched the game live I believe they said something along the lines of "There is insufficient evidence to see whether the ball was marked over the line, decision on scoreboard" and they gave it umpires call

mitch lewis somehow passing the concussion test when he was clearly out of it in the air which resulted in the unstable fall and acl

For the Aliir Aliir one I was there and an umpire somewhere DEFINITELY blew the whistle. Like everyone in my row and area was going what was the first whistle for.
So Aliir was playing the whistle for sure because a whistle was blown only for the umpire to change their mind. That’s why Ollie Wines - who is the most fair player on Port and rarely gets riled up, was actually having a go at the umpire like he did, something he genuinely never does in games from what I’ve seen.
Our game would be so much better if were changed to remove the grey judgement calls.

2) it's a mark regardless of whether it's controlled before going over the line or its never a mark over the line
"umpiring is the best its ever been" (two umpires watching a player get injured behind play via front high bump and a strike, doesnt pay frees for either)

I've always been appalled at the lack of holding the ball, incorrect disposal, and holding the man calls made these days in the name of a flowing game. Most games I watch these days I have absolutely no idea wtf is going on with half the calls.

I thought the karma of the St Kilda bounce ending in a goal, and then in the 4th it ending up not even going over the line was a fun oddity. Not often you get same game karma.
Ben Keays one is 100% not a free every single day of football history. Standard defence move to knock the ball away from a player in a contest.
CALEB!! You have got to mention this next week as one you might have missed.. wasnt exactly a thrilling game so easily missed but oh my god. 10 minutes to go the game is at a lull so everyone is kind of paying attention and there is not much pressure on the ball. Richmond vs dockers. The ball gets kicked into dockers 50 and it’s an absolute SITTER!! Walter’s goes up and takes a fresh airy (doesn’t even touch it)with NO ONE ON HIM!!! Me and the family had to replay it 3 times laughing no offence to the veteran and am not having a crack. Can you please check it out and chuck it in the next vid thanks. You can even hear the crowd simaltanously sigh 😅😅😅. Like subscribed

Bonts tackle slips off Rozee before ball hits the ground. The tackle didn't stick for long enough on it's own either. Think the umpire said he didn't have control/impede Rozee with the tackle.
What about in the Swans vs Saints game when Ollie Florent got pinged for holding the ball after getting tripped by Mason Wood
Forgot about the bounce in the saints goal square towards the end of the game, I think about 1 :30 left and it went along the boundary line and stayed in play

I hate the tackles that are almost not touching the player but gets a high tackle. All soft frees should be ignored, even for Victorians.
The Rankine Andrews one is great. Possibly why Rankine was so keen to keen to deal some out. But that's not this video

Should have been a free there. Not sure if Toby got a fine but it goes to show the Toby tax is not as simple as umps pick on him. I can't think of many players that get a fine when they deserve more than him and it being "technically not against the rules" as often as him. Those sternum wacks take the wind out of you

people forget they put another umpire on the field to help ref the game and they still cant get it right? Where are they standing when these wrong calls are made is the question straight after a failed holding the Ball ?
With the bordy Myer check mark for Collingwood he does fumble but you can still take a one hand mark

The Alia penalty: AFL umpires routinely penalise players who don't read the umpires mind 'ahead of the whistle'
eg: dodgy mark probably touched , player who catches the ball ( no whistle) is tackled or impeded - 50 meters.
Player catches a 7-metre kick ( no whistle ), gets tackled or impeded: 50 metres.
Alia anticipates a holding-the-ball, doesn't read the umpires mind telepathically, gets penalised.
Umpire management is very, very bad.
I was there an umpire blew the whistle for sure - that’s why he stopped. You can’t hear the whistle on the footage but there were other people around me that heard it too and thought the second one was for 50m penalty since he continued after the whistle.
Genuinely, I don’t think it was the main umpire but there was a whistle after the first one before Aliir stopped.

it was the saints game, where the ball bounced so badly it didnt even go out for a point
i disagree that rowan gave away a holding the ball ability to pass and control over the ball are not the same thing. granted its this isnt written into the rules but from what i can see as a player and a watcher the umpires tend to call frees based on a how long they had it and b if they could pass it in the short time they did have it rowan in that clip never had any time where he had either a leg or second hand available to actually pass it off thus no prior oppotunity to pass and imo correctly called. like i say its prior oppotunity to pass not gained control over the ball that we use to call holding the ball
