  • The Ferrograph Studio 8 is the first, only and last Ferrograph to truly be a professional machine not designed for the home market as well, unlike the Logic 7 which was indeed used in both, it does have studio standard balanced inputs and outputs (though the BBC did modify some to do so)
    I have been restoring these two machines for a number of evenings now, both of which were very faulty when I got them, 80% of the issues was down to bad capacitors, the rest can be contributed to the capacitors failing and blowing transistors and diodes. Ferrograph had stopped manufacturing recorders at this point and before, their second to last machine was a re-badge B77 called the series 77, this machine is a recorder built for them by Wayne Kerr. This logic operated machine is quite unusual, iy features things like fiber-optic lighting, temperature effected components and unusual counter controls as you will see in the video. These were very short lived as they were coming out just as Digital was coming in, they were also not as favoure as the Studer machines which already had a solid reputation.

    I was the development manager at Wayne Kerr during the 70's, and have the first Studio 8 designed and built at their labs in Tolworth, and the last from the production line at Cheltenham, when they closed. I purchased this from the receiver purely for sentimental reasons. This is still in my loft after 50 years, never having been used.

    Beautiful machines. Interesting design with the reserve lamp and the programable counter. Nice looking VU meters too. Thanks for sharing this. I always enjoy your videos.

    Hi, do you have a user manual to share on this? Looking for the specs on the balanced line and mic inputs... impedance on inputs

    Would you consider replacing the lightbulb with an LED then? It should last “forever” in comparison. Or will that compromise the authenticity of the original design?

      @Seblington  Před 8 lety +2

      +Ast A. Moore I would do if they blew but for now I would leave as is, the front bulbs need replacing and LED's tend not to diffuse light as well as bulbs do so I have ordered 40 more to have a little stock pile when needed.

    Hi, are there no studio machines that have glass ferrite heads?

    • @Seblington
      @Seblington  Před 8 lety

      +PA2OLD Hi, the Philips EL3501 or Pro 51 does, so do the Pro 21 and I suspect the Pro 36

      +PA2OLD Glass Ferrite heads might be great with regards to head wear, but they're not so great with regards to distortion and crosstalk.

      Yes that is correct. I was responsible for the head design on the studio 8 and they have frequency response within 0.2db from 20Hz to 18Khz and very low intermod distortion.

      Yes, the name is a bit unfortunate.

    The single light source with lightpipes to different locations sounds pretty odd and over engineered..
